Title: 1600 crossflow

GaryS3 - September 1, 2008 05:04 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I'm having a spot of bother with my crossflow.
When the car is running and warm it has a massive dead spot as the throttle opens.
Essentially from idle as you apply the throttle it cuts out and then picks up.
It does it from a standing start or when opening the throttle up after shutting it. really a big pain when cornering, nothing for seconds and then heaps all at once.

It's running a luminition ignition, the air filter is a home made jobbie and I'm not sure it's allowing enough air through.
It's on the list to be replaced.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Andy S is your man for that kind of thing...

I'm sure he'll be around later :D

Sounds like blocked progression stage in the carb - however without any further detail on the components I cant offer much more.

I'll have a look at the type of carb and take some pictures of the carb and air filter set up.

Excuse my ignorance, whats a blocked progression stage then?

Assume your teaching an idiot and explain it in simple terms please.

Thanks

As you can see, the air filter isn't standard in any way at all.

Any ideas what filter might fit?

thanks

Carb looks like a Cortina GT Weber 32 DGV DCM or similar - the description will be on one of the short sides of the base of the carb.

Carb needs a rebuild - with a bit of care you and following the diagram in the Haynes you should be able to strip it, clean it and re-set the float hieght.

As its a dual progressive carb it could be the progression stage or the accelerator pump jet,it could be a loose aux venturi, or just the float height too low.

Condition looks pretty grim and that air filter needs replacing - KN do plenty but looks like that has been made to fit under the bonnet without chopping it.

Basically the weber carb is a series of fixed diameter holes or jets and as the butterfly valve opens it uncovers a series of holes - Idle is always open then a series of progression holes before opening up to the main jet for the transition between the progression holes and the main jet the accelerator pump jet.

Problem could be anywhere along the line so needs a rebuild

Thanks Andy, the air filter is on the list. If I have to cut the bonnet so be it.

The carb service will be added to the list of winter jobs and done as the list is worked through.

cheers again

Looks like a 32-36 weber just like mine. I would definately give it a clean up. Those two screws on each side of the top of the carb body have the air idle jets located behind them, remove them and make sure they arent blocked. (in your picture right above the choke lever). One on each side of the carburetor. Take off the screws to the top of the carb and in the bottom of the float chambers are the main jets. But like Andy said a good cleaning of everything probably is in order.. Do you have power brakes? There is a big vacuum line coming off of the intake manifold spray some brake or carb clean around the gaskets or vacuum hoses see if the idle changes around for a vacuum leak... Good luck..

The carb is being done by my mate Mick, he's good at the fiddly stuff.
He rewired the dash one handed literally. Mick is a right arm amputee and rides an adapted bike. He just has the knack when it comes to working in confined spaces with fiddly bits.

I'm better with a big hammer

Only two weeks before the car comes off the road and then it's being pulled to bits and rebuilt. I'll improve where i can afford and make good the rest.

Regards

Gary
