Title: Galvanising

mut - August 10, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody has priced up galvanising a S1 chassis?

Any idea what it would cost me?

Many thanks,

Mick.

As quite a few members have viewed this topic I thougt I'd post an update.

After speaking to quite a few welder / fabricators the opinion seems to be that galvanisers are quite a rough and ready bunch, it seems that it's not unusual for them to lose / distort very large items so I don't think I will go down this route.

If there are any galvanisers out there that are willing to guarantee that they can do my chassis I am waiting for a reply.

Many thaks,

Mick.

You wont find any manufacturers Galvanising space frames because of the potential for the frame twisting due to the temperatures - basically the chassis is dipped in molten zinc at 450C and this can stress relieve it twisting it.

You would also have to drill drain holes everywhere or completely seal all the tubes otherwise it will come out far heavier than when it went it and cost you a small fortune.

Hence why most space frames are powder coated or just primed and sprayed

Usually Galv is only used on 1/8" thick ladder frames and the like.

Best bet is a high zinc content primer like Davids 182 or 192 or something like that and a good chassis paint or the epoxy type paints.

Keep it dry and off the winter roads - or buy a Ginetta
