Description: Body Armor

Baerholn - June 18, 2004 09:02 AM (GMT)
Here you buy armor to protect the torso. You may only equip armor up to the weight class that your character can wear. Rangers, for example, may wear up to medium armor and so may purchase armors of light and medium weight classes, but not armors of a heavy weight class. Body armor must be worn in layers. In order to equip an armor of a certain weight class, an armor of one lesser weight class must first be worn. So for a knight to equip a breastplate, he or she must first be wearing both light body armor and medium body armor. Two pieces of armor from the same weight class may not be worn at the same time.

Generally speaking, the heavier the armor, the better it protects the wearer. So light armors offer limited protection but do not hinder movement much at all, medium weight class armors make movement slightly more difficult, and heavy class armors moderately slow down the wearer, but offer great protection. However, while heavy armor will easily withstand most slashing attacks, blunt attacks, as from a mace or war hammer, will still deal moderate damage. This is due to their actually being designed to penetrate the defenses of heavily armored troops. Also keep in mind that a solid hit from a blunt attack will dent the armor, possibly crushing whatever soft flesh and bone is encased therein. Have fun!

Light Body Armor

Lvl 1 - Cloth Jacket/Tunic – 500
  • Generic, basic upper body protection. Doesn’t offer much protection at all, but also does not hinder movement in the least. A little itchy.
Lvl 2 - Leather Jacket/Tunic – 1,000
  • A bit stiffer than the cloth jacket or tunic, but protects a bit better as well. More effective against bladed weapons, but will still be cut fairly easily by them. Also protects a bit better against magic and the weather. Doesn’t hinder movement much at all.
Lvl 4 - Mesh Shirt – 2,000
  • Many tough fibers woven together tightly to help absorb damage. Does not at all hinder movement and protects better than the leather jacket/tunic against magic and blunt attacks.
Lvl 5 - Mesh Tunic – 2,500
  • Essentially the same as the mesh shirt but covers the legs a bit as well; also a little warmer for those of you traveling in the cold.
Lvl 7 - Reinforced Mesh Shirt – 3,500
  • Basic mesh material sown over a leather tunic. Absorbs damage from magic and blunt attacks better than the previous armor choices, and can stand up to weak slashing attacks.
Lvl 8 - Reinforced Mesh Tunic – 4,000
  • The best lightweight body armor that money can buy. Offers protection equal to that of the reinforced mesh shirt, and covers a bit of the legs as well.

Medium Body Armor

Lvl 5 - Reinforced Leather Mail – 3,500
  • Two layers of beaten leather fastened together with studs and worn as a shirt or a tunic. Offers basic protection against blunt and slashing attacks, but cannot stand up to very much force.
Lvl 10 - Ring Mail Shirt – 6,000
  • A shirt composed of metal rings looped together. Protects fairly well against slashing attacks, but doesn’t do any better than reinforced leather mail against blunt or magic attacks. Heavier than reinforced leather mail, so makes movement a little more cumbersome.
Lvl 11 - Ring Mail Coat – 6,500
  • Equal in construction to a ring mail shirt, but hangs down to a few inches above the knees. Open in the front up until about the groin, to allow for leg movement.
Lvl 13 - Chain Mail Shirt – 7,500
  • Smaller rings are used than in a ring mail shirt, and are first beaten and then riveted together. Extra durable and stands up to both slashing and blunt attacks well. About as heavy as ring mail, so movement is a little more difficult than with reinforced leather mail.
Lvl 14 - Chain Mail Coat – 8,000
  • Like the shirt, but longer! Buy two and get the second half-off!

Heavy Body Armor

Lvl 8 - Metal Plate – 6,000
  • Just a basic rectangular metal plate, worn over the chest and fastened to the body with leather straps. A matching metal plate is worn over the back. Handy for protecting against being impaled, but leaves no defense for the sides. The plate itself is a bit heavy, but doesn’t get in the way when the wearer is moving and as such does not hinder movement ability. Being somewhat heavy though it does cause the wearer to tire a bit more easily than without.
Lvl 16 – Breastplate – 10,000
  • Fully protects the front of the torso, guarding covered areas from slashing attacks. Good against blunt attacks as well. Somewhat heavy, so slows the wearer slightly.
Lvl 20 – Cuirass – 12,000
  • Fully encases the torso, and provides a neck guard and extra armor to protect the sides. The most protective heavy body armor that money can buy. Guards against slashing attacks and provides good defense against blunt attacks while covering a large area of the body. The heaviest piece of equipment, makes movement a little difficult; but hey, you’re a tank so who cares?

Valcrist - July 9, 2004 04:25 AM (GMT)
It was Valcrist's final stop. Protecting his torso was Valcrist's greatest concern, but as always, he valued speed above stability.

Valcrist first purchased a reinforced mesh tunic for 4,000 gold. Being made of mere cloth and leather it was lightweight enough not to hinder Valcrist's movement. Nevertheless, it offered great protection for the materials of which it was constructed; a good value, to be certain.

To be worn over the tunic, Valcrist purchased a chain mail coat; it would be the heaviest item in his inventory, but was worth it. Valcrist wanted a piece of armor that could protect against sword slashes, while hindering movement as little as possible. Chainmail was the best piece of equipment he could buy that would satisfy both of these desires. At 8,000 gold it was pricey, but would last long enough to more than compensate for the cost.

Valcrist was done. He had armored gloves and boots, protection for his body that he was quite happy with, and his old blue cloak that he had grown rather fond of. Perhaps he would upgrade his weaponry at a later date, but for now, he was satisfied.

Alkioth - July 11, 2004 07:14 PM (GMT)
Alkioth stepped into the shop, feeling a bit out of place. He had on makeshift sandals, and the old clothes the merchant had given him. He was greatly honored by the kind treatment of the merchant, but missed his former adornments. The ones he lost when he lost the town.

He approached the keeper of the armory, and requested an overview of all the armaments. After obliging him, the man asked what Alkioth was interested in. Alkioth chose the reinforced mesh tunic, and paid the man 4,000 gold.

"Thank you, sir."

"No, thank you." The man walked in the back, leaving a small child to watch the armory. Alkioth gave her a smile as he left.
