Title: Too Hard?
Description: Is it too hard to register?

Feel free to elaborate on your choices with a reply to this thread. ^_^

I'd like to see what you think. *nod*

Its not really that hard to create something for Dark Isles. While it can be easy to write something, most times when you are new to a site you want to make the best impression first hand. So if that person is unable to write what he or she feels, then that can cause a bit of trouble. Plus time and ability to get on the internet can play a part in it all I guess. It all depends o the person.

I agree with Haru.

It's a bit consuming for a new person to come and see all of this. The guide is simple and easy enough, however. The first shock is the only thing for a newbie to overcome.

I've notedthat we've had some people register to the site but not to Dark Isles. They submit their Dark Isles registration once (or twice) get it rejected and then just stop. And from that perspective, trying to join and basically being rejected can really bite. So I'll say it can be slightly harder then it should.

For me it wasn't hard, because I can write pages and pages and pages if necessary. ;) But not everybody cares to do that stuff, and some people just can't. I do think it's pretty discouraging to be a newbie and have a decent application rejected because it's not long enough. Is it supposed to be all about length here?

Derhlith - March 31, 2004 03:54 AM (GMT)
No, but we need something long enough to judge the applicant's writing ability. Someone could churn out an amazing sentence, easy. Same with an amazing paragraph, no problem. But only the talented or at least those with potential can belt out a multi-page story that just "r0xx0rz". That's the point. It's sort of a bar to keep out people who would only burden the site, or who aren't serious about questing here. The length is just a show of dedication and a means for us to judge your talent by.

Personally, a short, sweet, and to the point message is far better than something long and dragged out.

See, now I dont mind length and all that, just as long as it doesnt effect quality of da postage. Like in CDI....I believe some one said it had turned into "A large ramble of flashbacks" at one point in time...*remembers who said it just not the wording*....so Length is all fine and dandy as long as it doesnt effect the quality like it did there.

Well, if you consider valuable RPers to be people who write several pages per post, then expecting that in applications makes sense. But if you want people who can make it short and sweet, maybe be a bit more lenient in applications? If they crank out one brilliant paragraph per post, isn't that good?

In quests the length isn't as important as the effort and quality. But as far as registration goes I prefer length and quality because length + quality = a pretty good barometer for effort. And in order to get into DI you have to want it. A sweet little paragraph full of pretty words and ever-changing sentence structures, while good, could be done in about 20 minutes. That's not the type of player we want registered. That's the type of person (typically) who would be here for two or three weeks, then disappear, like so many people who have registered here and disappeared already.

On top of that, the longer the story, the more creativity that is required. It will become really hard really quick to churn out Quests if you lack the creativity to make it interesting. People who get sick of doing it will drift away and disappear.

So the great length that we require, which can be attainable in 1 shot by some, takes work for others. And the only type of person who will do that work is someone who wants to be here. Someone who wants to be here won't leave anytime soon. Those are the types of people that we want and need here right now while the site is still slow. Which is why long registration stories are passed while short ones are not.

Well then, it looks like you've answered your own question.

However, I am on plenty of RP sites that aren't all about length. Posts are much shorter, but people definitely do stick with it! If you want length, that's fine, it's your forum. But how much someone is willing to write really doesn't have much to do with how dedicated they are in my book.
