Title: Number of Hacking Incidents Increased
Nikkio2003 - May 26, 2003 11:22 PM (GMT)
Hackers...people with too much time on their hands.
Truly, they must have alot of free time to hassle complete strangers for their own enjoyment. Tch, pathetic.
They've already crashed the whole net a few times..why worry? As long as there are imbeciles, there will be idiotic deeds.

Hackers, the controllers of a new destiny. Fate of a new world lies in their grips, menacing and leveling the power of a whole new desire. But to stop them, is however...impossible. With the grant of one swipe of their power, at THE WORLD could be destroyed or begone or its existence. Life beyond measure has its tense force to be arranged with a stronger madness. Is this the end? Or...the beginning? Friend or foe, enemy or ally. Shall we trust, or die trusting? Questions we urge to answer, yet...menacing to create an actual true answer. We are the people of a new dream, THE WORLD has us. It is time to fight back, the hackers will find that they have messed with the wrong opponents to trouble with. The war....has come.
PS. Hehe, sorry. But I felt like being justice. Its sounds cool though.

I think it's just the administrations thoughts about it, if someone could change their characters looks the could probably hack into the whole system. Beause the worlds people can't be trusted anymore, just because he said "I only want to change my look" doesn't mean he couldn't have a plan aginst the entire system, and the administration doesn't want to take that chance.

Dear "The World" participants:
It has come to the attention of the administrators of "The World" that the number of hacking incidents on its servers has been increasing. Some suspects have been rounded up at times, yet it appears that their dependability as sources diminish quickly as the -destroyer's- paths are cleared up quickly, and they delete any hope for catching up to them. However, the Administrators have sent us orders to assure you that your accounts are safe, and that the problem is being dealt with.

There is a heavy discussion of this topic on the BBS that you may be interested in Jin.

Dose anyone Know of a way to protect ourselves? Because from what I have heard these Hackers seem omnipitent.

Indeed. The main problem with any hacker in general is that a corporation like CC wouldn't turn there back on any hacker, even those who openly and repeatedly help the system. Its that kind of rejection that makes white hats turn to black hats. I even know of a hacker who exposed a flaw in the security system of a government institution. They thanked him, then threw him in jail for 25 years, because obviously he was planning to use his information for personal benefit at a later date.
It is kind of an odd policy they have towards character modification though. I mean, so long as you don't try and tweak your characters actual attributes, why would anyone care?

Interesting, though hacking to make your character immortal couds quite interesting

I've got explanations for 4 things:
1) What gives hackers their abilities and powers. It's really easy.
2) Why it can't be fixed without overhauling The World, possibly making it slower. That, or breaking it.
3) Why some hackers aren't bad.
4) Why you might need them more than you think.

I'm not sure if anyone really cares for this knowledge, but here's the 4 above statements.
1) What gives hackers their abilities and powers. It's really easy.
The World was probably programmed in a sloppy way at first, to ease development and testing. It's not unusual to tighten security at the last moment in order to make debugging/programming a lot easier. There are two possibilities. Either the CC Corp was in a rush and decided not to patch the holes in the system, or the programmers didn't close all the holes.
2) Why it can't be fixed without overhauling The World, possibly making it slower. That, or breaking it.
The holes in The World aren't probably only buffer overflows and other usual hacker welcome mats. The World was probably programmed in a manner where all object in the game trust each other, to facilitate and speed up its work. With The World's guts exposed to anyone, it's easy for a hacker to exploit this trust. Fixing this would require a complete overhaul of how The World manages trust and actions. This could also slow it down. You can't just "plug" this hole. It would make the game choke in millions of objects trying to interact and failing. It would stop working completely.
3) Why some hackers aren't bad.
Some hackers don't seek to destroy, ruin, or cheat in the game. They instead seek to expand its abilities and break through the boundaries faced by normal players. They could easily improve that quality of the gaming experience. Imagine, for example, if you could make your won field for you and your friends. That would expand Thw World's capabilities. Other examples of innocent hacking are modifying your character and editing the fields as a form of personal expression. Like graffiti art. Those hackers who work on the system without malicious intent simply free themselves from the constraints imposed by The World. But some people can only see black and white, no grey in the middle.
4) Why you might need them more than you think.
Hackers may actually be partly a blessing. Think of how dangerous it could be if a monster became corrupted and gained infinite HP or attack power. The only ones who could handle that are them, because they could rewrite the creature's data and make themselves immune to its attack for their own safety. No players would be KO'ed trying to fix the problem. Think of the advantages of having hackers around.

Hacking may be good.. hacking may be bad... without it... I would not exist... if "The World" goes down... I do too...
