Title: Experience [Must Read!]
Centrus - October 23, 2009 12:36 AM (GMT)
Hello everyone!
The staff has been talking lately, and we've come to the decision to try something new. From now until the end of December, we'll be trying out a new system for the board, an EXP system. Don't worry, levels aren't being reset or anything. What we're doing is adding some versatility to our grading, as well as opening it up to the ability for everyone to get some experience for quests that wouldn't earn a level. We talked it over for a few weeks, and what we've come to is a general recognition that it would enrich everyone's experience. So, with no further adieu, the highlights!
| QUOTE (The Important Stuff) |
- EXP Beta runs from Oct 23rd, 2009 - January 1st, 2010
- 1 Level is equal to 1000 EXP
- Everyone starts at their current level and 0/1000 EXP
- The higher your level, the harder your grading will be [Nothing new. Same as it has been. Just saying that if a level 1 and a level 10 turn in the same work, the level 10 will get less EXP. No surprise.]
- Quests that are currently in progress will be graded on the EXP system unless you have a valid reason for it not to be. [Talk to me! I love communication.]
- If you could please include EXP values along with your levels in your sig, that would be awesome. [You'd make our lives so much easier, which makes us happier when we grade. I tease, I tease.

Any questions/comments/concerns? Talk to me on AIM or post it up here. I'm happy to talk about it.
EDIT: Just editing to say that it has obviously been continued on past the test run.

Sounds neat! Once I get around to posting... er... anything... I'll see how I feel about it fully. I think it's a good one though. 'cause I like levels. And I don't really care about much else. lol.
Bane - October 23, 2009 06:55 AM (GMT)
One thing I would like clarified: What happens at the end of the promo? If we decide not to go with the EXP idea as our method for leveling, what happens to EXP held by the players? Do they get a GP payout or is their level rounded up/down?
Centrus - October 23, 2009 08:19 AM (GMT)
Hmm. I hadn't thought about that, Bane. At the end of the trial period, we'll be seeing if we want to continue using the system. If we continue, you keep your total. If not, I don't see why a GP payout would be unreasonable.
We'll discuss it and come back to ya with something real soon, alright?
Bane - October 23, 2009 08:46 AM (GMT)
Sounds cool to me. We'll need to see if the system works. From what I can see, it looks promising so far, so either way, so long as people get some form of reward for their work, I do not see this as a bad thing in any way.
Fayre - October 23, 2009 03:25 PM (GMT)
I really like this system! It seems like a good solution to scenarios where someone is close to earning a level, but not quite there.
Stane - October 23, 2009 09:30 PM (GMT)
Just for clarification, if you earn a level or two in a quest, do you not gain EXP? Meaning, EXP is only rewarded if the rewards are less than a level. Just asking. I don't see how this new system could fail :).
Centrus - October 23, 2009 10:00 PM (GMT)
To borrow an example [thanks Talal!], if you were to gain 3 levels and then some, it would be written as "Stane: +3500 EXP, +Defense Sword, +Noble Cloak"
The EXP isn't given only for "between levels", it's just a means of accomplishing "between levels", like a means of storing up to a level.
Clarified, I hope?
Isato - October 23, 2009 11:32 PM (GMT)
Okay so , all I have to do is make sure I don't hit 1000 exp. Sounds fun.

To simplify what Centrus said, instead of gaining 1 level, you're just going to gain 1000 EXP instead. But because now we're working with EXP, we can get, effectively, 1.5 levels off a quest instead of just a single level and gear to make up for it.
Stane - October 24, 2009 12:52 AM (GMT)
Yep, I gets it. Gracias seņor.
Talal - October 24, 2009 06:28 AM (GMT)
I like the idea. I think an accumulative point system is a good way to earn levels. It can give the person a sense of how far they need to go and may also provide that sometimes needed creative urge to get there.
Nemorac - October 24, 2009 10:53 AM (GMT)
Sounds like a good idea...this way, someone can still get some work done toward a level for questing, even if they don't get a full level from whatever they've done.
Shenmock - October 25, 2009 05:21 PM (GMT)
I honestly like this idea. Maybe I'll even continue the quest I started months ago with Shenmock... >.>
And I'm guessing the five level max rule still applies?
Bane - October 25, 2009 09:32 PM (GMT)
To my knowledge yes, although it's more a maximum of 5000 EXP per quest now. =P
Giggles - October 26, 2009 01:02 PM (GMT)
Sounds interesting enough. I'll bite and try it out.
The_lone_dragon - October 27, 2009 12:13 AM (GMT)
I wonder though. before way way way back i had a quest that earned me 3 levels plus a tonne of weaons and gp and well it was a large haul.
I'm worried the "half" levels or 56xp or 400 xp or what ever the extra but not there yet xp may dampen the extra bonuses of questing.
I'm all for the new xp style and may clean off the old blades becuase i always felt kind of cheated when i didn't get a level or such.
an example
before +3 levels and Lath Blades + armor type ! + # gp
now 3400 xp and lath blades and 5gp
being that each case is up to the mods to grade and such and how they are human id hate to think xp would be traded for tiems or the other way around.
all things being equal id rather have tonnes of items and interesting do dads (im a collector of sorts) then an extra 5 xp that i could get by post another quest.
Centrus - October 27, 2009 02:05 AM (GMT)
Items and such will still be given out. Don't worry!
nighthand - October 27, 2009 04:57 PM (GMT)
If you're too worried about it you could specify in your signature a wishlist of sorts, and specify you'd rather have items than half-level exp. I can't guarantee the graders will grant your wishes, but it'd help influence them if they're torn.
Shenmock - April 8, 2010 09:22 PM (GMT)
Dumb question, and it's late. Sue me.
Are we still doing this now? I know not many people are doing quests in the first place, but still...
nighthand - April 10, 2010 07:06 PM (GMT)
The administration feels there's no reason at this time not to continue the Experience System, given that it caused no problems and likely caused no harm.
I.e. we shrugged and decided to keep it.The deadline super passed, but next to nothing happened during the 'test period' so... you know.
Shenmock - April 11, 2010 03:40 AM (GMT)
Hmm...hopefully that will change soon. Thanks for the update.

Yep. I plan on continuing an old quest and starting a new one in the next few weeks. Lots of projects due soon :/.
Damek - April 13, 2010 05:19 AM (GMT)
I had to dust off the cobwebs to come comment, but after the school year's over I should be back. And I'm also looking forward to testing this out.
Hopefully with Fayre. :)
Jpec07 - April 13, 2010 07:09 AM (GMT)
I expect we'll see a wave of activity when the summer hits. Probably nothing major, but maybe we'll actually have a chance to use this thing and see how it works...
