11. Story:
It was a glorious Saturday morning. The sun began to climb into the sky to dry the dewdrops that slept on the grass. The birds were singing gleefully as they fluttered about with little care in the world. Inside a large house lived a family of two. A father who had a dark past, and his daughter who resembled her mother. Her name was Jessica, and she was still locked in her dreamland as her alarm clock continued to secretly countdown... BAAARIIIINNNGAAAAaaa-SMASH!!!
The sound that had startled her awake wasn't the clock itself, but the fact that she had accidently shoved the small noisy demon off of its pedestal. "Aw crud..." The young maiden grumbled looking at the shattered remains while still drowsy.
"Jessicaaaaa~ You're going to be laaaaaattteeeeee~!" Came her father's voice from downstairs. He was whining again. "We were going to get a copy of that gaaaammmeeee todaaayyy and ... AND... You've slept through the mooorrrrnnniiinnngg...!"
"I'm getting up, Dad! Jeez!" Snarled the agitated teen as she threw her pillow at the door. Then rolled off the inflatable mattress that had nearly swallowed her during the night. Once on her feet she scratched the back of her head, yawned, and stared down at the sagging bed. "It's gotta be inflated again? What a cheep piece of snot."
She slowly headed into her closet and pulled out whatever was closest and began to change out of her sleepwear and into her usual attire for the day. Over her head went the white T-shirt and resting on her shoulders was black leather. A pair of equally black pants made of pleather joined the two tops and two white socks were not far behind. Eventually, however, those socks were engulfed by large coal boots.
After getting dressed, the young woman opened the door to the bathroom and began a task far more dangerous. Combing her wild dyed-blue hair. A sigh as she looked at her reflection, knowing already that it would just return to this state later in the day. Such was always the sad tale of beautiful curls that were natural. And it was also something that brought a great deal of pain as well, combing out all the random snarls and fallen strands of hair.
Once the awful duty of hygiene known as the "mourning routine" was finished, Jessica finally headed downstairs. She looked shocked to see that they for once had company. Of the female kind. She was staring at an older woman, slightly older than her father. "Wow, Dad... Who is this?"
The very woman she was staring at looked like she had gone through hardships, giving her premature snow white hair. Her stunning green eyes made it seem as if spring was coming, but at the same time were dark and fear-educing. As if this woman would suddenly strike like a large cat that had spotted its pray. Her outfit was like that of a high-class fighters and seemed to be unfit for the hot summer air. Long pearl white sleeves and leggings with the occasional hint of a refreshing blue stream. And her aura was sane, if not also a swirling mass of death.
Jessica's father was almost the exact opposite, a fine rich man with a clean face. It was possible that he couldn't stand any form of facial hair, other than his well-kept eyebrows. He was wearing a blue suit with a red tie with the family's shield on it. He never did explain why the shield had that captivating tiny blue imp on it, much like many other expensive items throughout their household. The only thing he would ever say was that it was the cherished guardian of their bloodline, and a symbol of friendship that would last even into the afterlife. Once or twice he had mentioned the creature's name, Vivek.
"Huh?" The father blinked, then looked at his long-lost friend from many moons ago. He childishly played with his golden locks as he grinned, "Oh... That's Tatty! But that's not important!"
The older woman smirked and shook her head, as if that line was to be expected. "I was just passing by. So yes, you shouldn't pay any mind to me... I'm mostly bad news anyway."
"...Okay..." Now feeling a tad bit awkward towards the white-haired and fine-skinned one, the younger female turned to the male in the room. "I thought we were late?"
"And by that I meant YOU were late, Jessy!" The father laughed all too triumphantly. He took out his wallet and pulled out an amazing sum of money. "Take this and go buy yourself that game you've been wanting. You know the one... From the magazine that you keep snippin' pictures out of!"
Baffled, but excitedly did the teenager snatch the bills and run out the door. Behind her, the woman called Tatty chuckled, "That girl of yours is nothing like you, James. Nothing like you at all."
The outside air was blistering hot compared to the cold climate she lived in. Miss Woodsworth wasn't too pleased to find that she was already in need of a refreshment halfway to her destination. So she stopped and took a quick look around until a small shop selling iced coffee got her attention. She looked both ways before crossing the street made of stone paths. Everything about this area was strange, it was of a rich-person quality but kept a child's desire for natural sites. Many of the windows had large collections of assorted flora, which filled the humid air with a sweet scent. And the buildings were all painted scenes of springtime meadows filled with wondrous flowers. They weren't real flowers but were of such eye-widening detail that they looked like they could truly exist.
Inside the coffee shope labeled "Watson's Homebrew Cafe" was a cool atmosphere. Not many people were filling up the area and a lone man stood at the counter. He was aging well for a man of his sixties, a white moustache fixed upon his upper lip much like it belonged there. He smiled happily towards his favorite customer, "Why ello there young miss! I wasn't expecting to see Master Woodsworth's daughter in my little cafe' so early in the morning. How has school been treating you? I'm sure all the chaps have their eyes on such a fair lady as yourself."
Jessica smiled back to the older gentleman behind the counter, as if he was an old friend that she knew since she was born. "I'm doing very well, and I've been studying heavily in geography. Hopefully I'll ace it this year." Then she put a finger on her chin while looking over the menu, "I'll have an iced cappuccino with caramel and hazelnut. With raspberry and dark chocolate cream. A small amount of whip on the top, with a sprinkling of mint."
"Oh ho! Your Special blend? You haven't ordered your special blend in so long! What's the occasion my dear?" Mister Watson asked, now quite cheerful.
"Father has given me the money to buy that game I've been looking at. It's called "The World". From what I've heard it's not only very popular but also very realistic." Jess explained while watching her order being made.
"You must be excited, my dear." Watson nodded to the teen while finishing the drink up. Then he placed it down, gave a quick glance around the currently empty room, and grinned. "So today this is on the house. I hope you have a jolly good time with your new game, Miss Woodsworth."
"Thank you, Mister Watson. You have a good day as well!" Jessica beamed while taking the free drink. She waved to the old man happily before stepping back into the furnace.
Once back outside, she took a sip of the otherwise expensive cocktail of flavor she had just received. It always seemed to make all the heat or awfulness of any occasion simply vanish. The old gent really knew how to make a fine drink. He was cheaper compared to most well-known companies such as Starbucks, which made him very popular in the community of caffeine-lovers. Once she finished the iced coffee she disposed of the container by putting it in the nearest trash bin. Then continued on her quest to purchase "The World".
After darting a few blocks Jessica came to the store she had window shopped in since what seemed forever. It was called "Frankly Video Games and Other Such Thing those Young Whippersnappers Seem to Enjoy". And from what she heard they had just gotten a new game in stock that was otherwise once too popular to bring to this area of town. By now it was all too known for her tastes, but it just piqued her interest too much. It was one of few overly-populated games she had taken an interest in. And she had entered the store just in time. The last copy of "The World" was sitting there, waiting. Like it had been waiting just for her on a lone shelf by itself in the back along with any accessories one would need to play.
It was quickly obtained and bought, with a bit of change to spare. Was it some kind of allowance? Jess shrugged it off, and took leave with her happy purchase.
While carrying the bags that held her loot, she looked upwards. The sun had been swallowed by a large gray storm cloud. She would have to hurry home or else feel the wraith of the upcoming rain that was threatening to hit at any moment. So she huddled her things into her arms and ran as fast as she could with the bundle of goods. It was likely her luck to be a member of the local track and field club, even though she was always in the shadow of everyone else's popularity.
A crack of thunder sounded slightly past the halfway point. It was a warning to her to pick it up a notch. Which she tried to do, but stumbled and ran into a mail truck. The mailman stared blankly at her in a confused manner as she waved and continued to race the weather.
Once home, it was all too quiet. Which would have been strange to any sane family, but it was a usual happening in this one. Clearly Jessica's father and his friend had gone off somewhere. Not very surprising, James was always something with the ladies... and ended up making one, too!
With all that aside, the teen went right to the computer room and booted it up. A sigh followed since she had to wait for the loading bar to finish its job, apparently her father had turned the PC off incorrectly again. But this was followed by a cry of victory! Jessica quickly downloaded the game and started it as soon as she could.
Little did she know what surprises this game, "The World", would hold in store for her. Or of the friends she would make while adventuring in its domain...
Thank you thank you thank you for writing more than a one page reg. Every now and again it's great to seem some initiative!
