| “…so t equals?” There was silence for a moment before he sighed, closing the textbook and rubbing his eyes. It was one o’clock in the morning and for the past half hour they’d been working on the same problem to no avail. Actually, it was more Gerard's fault for doing nothing to actually even listen to the equation, let alone answer it. “What? Oh…” Gerard scratched the back of his head, biting his tongue once again. His mind had wandered again. “Sorry, I’m just tired.” He rubbed his eyes and blinked; yet he knew somehow his little act wasn’t going to fool his roommate. Nothing ever did. He looked at the floor, avoiding the impeding gaze that was focused on his face. Why did this always happen the night right before the final? “Well, I’m not staying up any longer for you. It’s been thirty minutes and you haven’t listened to a word I’ve said.” His roommate, whose name was Max, tossed the textbook to him before setting off to bed. Gerard hardly cared, though, as he knew there was nothing he could do to keep from thinking about him. For all he knew, he could’ve been sitting in the chair staring off into space for hours, thinking about what had happened the previous day. But he’s dead, he kept on telling himself. His brother, a year older than him, had passed away months before. A lot of people thought it had been from a heart attack or something, but there was a sort of catch that he had been investigating for quite a while: his brother had been playing an online game when he died. Earlier the day before he had seen on the news a man reporting that several people had suddenly gone into comas due to the same game. Gerard still couldn’t accept the fact that he was dead, so he clung to the fact that somehow, someway there was something in the game that would lead him to find the reason behind his brother’s death. Another part of his mind told him that there was a way to bring him back, but that was impossible. All he could really do was try to look for sources that could lead him to the truth and that was the first thing that had led him there. Now the package sat on his desk, still in the plastic wrap and waiting to be opened. The laptop was next to it, its screen giving off a faint glow that flickered off every now and then. Gerard sighed. It was probably four o’clock in the morning now, usually about the time he fell asleep. Sleep just didn’t come like it was supposed to. Gerard slowly walked to the chair, where he sat down and slowly ripped the plastic wrap off of it. He blinked back the urge to sleep and slipped the disk into the slot before pulling on the headset. You’re crazy, he told himself, but in a reasonable way. He couldn’t help but laugh at the stupidity. A character application screen glimmered up in front of him, revealing a good number of options for what his character would look like and what his class and gender would be. There was an overwhelming amount of options and he couldn’t help but scroll through each and every one of them before finally even deciding to pick one of them. Don’t get too carried away. For class he chose a ‘Heavy Axeman.’ He was sure that most people preferred to even their stats out and play a Medium class, but something told him that it wouldn’t be too hard to blow through the game solo if he chose this class. Who knew how many jerks resided in this game, anyways? The design was a little complicated to figure out. I hardly get any choices other than armor that makes me look like the size of the Empire State Building, he thought glumly as he scrolled through. Finally he came upon a simple design, a sleeveless jacket, some shorts, and some boots. While it certainly wasn’t a lot, it was better than having to watch his character lug around all that armor. After choosing his hair and eye color and his username, Gerard couldn’t help but smile a touch. “Nothing like starting an adventure at five o’clock in the morning." |
