Title: Need a little help with a project for Psych 1B

Takua - April 19, 2009 01:42 AM (GMT)
Now then. I have here a project for Psych that I need to get done, which means that I need to get this survey out 'into the wild' as it were and distributed. Therefore, I requested, and got, permission to post this here. I need as many people to respond as I can before Sunday night, and it should only take a minute or two. If your answer doesn't fit with the options here, just write the answer in (Most applies to age). Please respond with your answers if you would be so kind (just write in your answer per line, so something like...
Male
18-19
4
3...

And so on. (If you don't want to post them here, you can PM them to me))

Here we go.

Also, my apologies, but the formatting sucks thanks to Invisionfree not allowing extra spaces.

I don't really have separate sessions of multi-tasking, but.. it's something of a continuous stream of moving between different tasks while it's occuring. Peg me at 1-4.

Do you feel more annoyed while multitasking than while you are not?

Yes Conditional Yes (will truncate to 'No' if some form of rounding is necessary) No

For future reference though: when a question asks you to rate a statement, give a statement. The rating questions were all... questions. -.-' I mean, that didn't really matter, but... uhm. Yeahhh. I'll be quiet now. >_<

Apologies on the statements then. I'll fix that for the next survey that I do. Thanks for the responses though, it really does help.

I multitask constantly. Even when I'm not doing anything, my brain is running six or seven processes at least. I find that I actually work better when I'm doing more than one thing at once, since when I stare at things to long it all tends to blur together or I fall asleep. (Namely, while editing a script for my comic, I managed to miss blatantly obvious typos after several days of staring at it. Even a really stupid one where I credited the line to the wrong character when I was transcribing it from the last proof cycle.)

I'm the kind of person who has over 15 tabs of Firefox more often than not.

Comments:
For surveys like this where you have five degrees of agreement, you need to make the "questions" actually be statements. You can't agree with a question, but you can agree with a statement. Additionally, I thought that the question of annoyance would be better if you instead asked, "Do you feel more stressed while multitasking than when you are not?" Additionally, "Do you feel bored when you're not multitasking?" would be a good question to ask. It's also necessary to define just what you mean by "multitasking." Just my $.02. ^_^

EDIT: Would you mind if I edited formatting into your post to make it shinier?

Takua - April 19, 2009 11:11 PM (GMT)
lol, if you really feel like it, go ahead. I've got all of the responses that I need although more would be good.

I also have a link that I'll put in here sometime tonight to show you where the class got the assignment from and where (in part) I got the questions from.

And thus, the link.

Now let me ask a different, non-assignment related question. How many of you feel more stressed out during and after multitasking than before?

nighthand - April 21, 2009 03:26 PM (GMT)
Multitasking is my default mode of operation. I need at least 2-3 things to be doing at all times otherwise I get bored, and when I get bored I get frustrated.

Like right now, I've got this post I'm writing, I'm planning out the EC quest some more, I'm chatting with 3-4 people on AIM, and I'm reading a book. Oh, and waiting for my next final. =P

Man, I can't write and do annnything else without having my work suffer. Even my roommate on the phone totally gets me off track. Peace, quiet, and a focused mind is what lets me write best :3. If people are having conversations around me, I usually put on the headphones and listen to something without words or this. Kinda weird yeah, but check out pink at 20%...it's nice...:P

Zeich - April 22, 2009 04:08 AM (GMT)
I'm like Nights in that sense; I always have about three or four things going. When I'm writing, usually I'm listening to music, jumping to a flash game or my DS every few minutes, browsing forums, and chatting with various peoples over AIM and MSN. Doesn't detract from my concentration in the least, nope.

Arcion - April 23, 2009 03:32 PM (GMT)
I'm at peak efficiency when I've got three things going at once actually.. Typing, reading from a paper what to type, and listening to music.

Doing so many things at once helps my brain concentrate and thus become more productive by shifting things to unconscious control. In the example above, I'm only concentrating on the music, my brain is working without my control to read and type.

Also, when I'm driving, I feel more secure about being safe when I have something to listen to, usually a CD, but when I'm acting as a chauffeur, I turn off the music and listen to the conversation (just enough that I'm letting my subconscious drive, not enough to actually record the conversation unless they're asking something of me).

The only time I'm not multitasking is when I'm asleep (though my brain might be doing two or three things at once, I'm not aware of it). Even when I'm watching TV mindlessly, I'm usually watching the show, analyzing it, and thinking of something else.

The way I see it, we're given the chances, why not use them all as often as possible?
