12. Story:
Crystal skipped cheerfully down the wide, spacious corridor. Her rucksack, bulging with books and close to coming apart at the seams, bounced heavily on her back. Her private Japanese lesson had finished ten minutes early, giving her a chance to avoid the rush that happened every time lessons were over for the day; the tranquillity would suddenly shatter into a cacophony of sounds and the passageway would be filled to bursting. A student stampede. She shuddered at the thought, picked up the pace. There was no way she wanted to be caught up in one again. Not after what happened last time.
Crystal glanced about. The breeze drifting through the open windows in the corridor whispered through her long gold-brown hair, which was tied back into a high ponytail. The sharp, fresh scent of damp grass and leaves reached her; she shivered slightly at the chill in the air. It was only the start of autumn but she had no doubt it would be getting a lot colder soon. The corridor was quiet except for the occasional footfalls of students that had been let out early from their lessons.
There was no sign of Melissa yet. She was one of the only two friends Crystal had left; the others had either moved away, turned nasty or broken up with her. They had been friends since infant school and had enjoyed pretending to be characters from books and anime when they were small, going on adventures and working together to defeat imaginary villains. A logical, critical-thinking girl, she excelled in maths, art and science and studied these subjects at AS level.
I kind of miss the times we played make believe in the playground during infant and junior school, Crystal reflected. We had so much fun. We could lose ourselves in our imagination and do whatever we wanted, be whoever we wanted. Now that we're a lot older, we can't do that stuff anymore. I wish there was a way we could. Still, it's a shame we can't spend as much time together but at least I get to see her occasionally. She fumbled in her jacket pocket and took out a small box, smiling to herself. I've got her something special for her seventeenth birthday, which is today, to thank her for sticking with me for so long – after all, she helped me through some tough times when I was bullied.
“Crystal!” a voice called.
Crystal jerked out of her thoughts, hastily pocketing the box again. Hazel eyes met green.
A tall, slightly pudgy teen walked toward her, short auburn hair tied into a brush-like low ponytail. Her freckled face broke into a grin as she stood before her. “It's been a while.”
“Definitely has, Melissa.” Crystal smiled back at the girl towering over her petite form. It never ceased to amaze her how tall her friend was; she was almost the height of many of the boys at the college. This had proved to be an advantage in the past when she had seen off people who had been bullies. “We've both been busy. This is your present, by the way. I hope you like it.”
Melissa took the black box she produced from her pocket. She opened it. Inside was a choker with an emerald hanging from it. “It's nice...for a parting gift.”
“What?” Crystal was confused.
The teen weighed the emerald in her hand, smirking. “It's been fun stringing you along but enough's enough.”
“N – No way...I thought - ”
“We were friends?” the other teen snorted, looking at her disdainfully. “Huh. Yeah right! As if I'd like a worthless, good-for-nothing dweeb like you.” She snickered derisively. “How naďve.”
Crystal seethed, tears of frustration and anger welling in her eyes. “Why are you doing this? We've known each other for years...and now you're going to throw it all away!”
“That's right, Crystal. Playtime's over.” She glanced at her watch briefly. “Oh, got to go. See you around. It's been real, way too real.”
With that, she spun on her heel, callously tossing the choker over her shoulder. The emerald shattered, an explosion of tiny, tinkling fragments. The pieces of their friendship littered the floor.
Crystal stared at them numbly. She could not move, could not think. Thirteen years had just been cast aside. Thirteen years that had meant so much to her. Thirteen years that had all been lies.
She broke into a run, dodging past students. “Come back!” she shouted at Melissa's retreating figure. Her voice fell on deaf ears.
Hundreds of students poured into the corridor in an endless stream. Crystal pushed past people, trying desperately to keep her former friend in her sights but to no avail. She was overwhelmed by the sheer number of students. It was battling against the current in a stormy sea; she was swept away by the human tide.
Once she was outside, she sank to the ground on her hands and knees, trembling violently. She breathed fast. Her hair fell loose down her back, scruffy and dishevelled. Her body ached with bruises. Her head throbbed. Tears splashed the ground at a steady pace like rain.
It's been a month since then. Melissa doesn't look at me nor speak to me. It's still hard to believe we were never friends in the first place. I hope she doesn't become like the very bullies she used to prevent from getting at me. Crystal sighed deeply, walking out into the faint autumn sunshine. At least I have Rebecca left. I'd have nobody to turn to otherwise. She's been friends with me as long as Melissa though because of what's happened, I don't think that's as important now. How will I know she won't ditch me in the future? I guess I'll just have to be cautious until I'm sure I can trust her. She said she wanted to show me something after college. I wonder what it is – it better not be something nasty.
“Hey, Crystal!” someone greeted her brightly.
A blonde-haired teen almost cannoned into her in her haste.
“Easy, tiger!” Crystal laughed, her eyes meeting blue ones that danced with excitement as she steadied the girl. “What's all the fuss about?”
“It's what I want to show you!” Rebecca grinned. “It's one most of the most awesome things ever. You know you said you wanted a way to go back to playing make believe? Well, what you're about to see will do that but take it to a whole new level. Let's go to my place and check it out!”
Crystal's smile broadened. “Okay.”
They sat down at Rebecca's computer not long after, Crystal looking inquisitively at the headsets on the desk.
“These are for an online game called the World,” explained Rebecca patiently. “They allow you to see and hear what's going on.” She gestured to the controllers. “Those let you move around. Let's get started – follow my lead.”
Crystal put a headset on like she did and grasped a controller, unconvinced. “So this is what you want to show me – a game. What's so good about it? You know I've never been one for internet gaming.”
Rebecca chuckled. “Ah, but this game is different from all the rest. You'll see when we get into it. It's the biggest and most popular game ever created.”
“I see...” Crystal was still sceptical.
“Let's go!” Her friend clicked the icon on her desktop.
From that moment on, Crystal's perception of internet gaming changed forever and she was no longer the girl who worried incessantly about getting bullied, whether she would ever get over breaking up with Melissa, if Rebecca would leave her too. She became Fenixa the Twin Blade.
Well, there was a spot or two where you had your verb tense mismatched, but other than that, looks good!
