Title: Great Movies of the Summer
nighthand - July 16, 2008 10:11 PM (GMT)
Is it just me, or has this summer been insane for movies? Practically everything I've seen recently is amazing. Wanted was shiny as hell, even though it wasn't high on plot. Wall-E was probably the best animated film in years and was basically designed so that every single aspect was amazing. I've heard Hellboy 2 is fantastic for nerds, and I'm probably going to see it tonight. Not to mention Dark Knight, which my friend just got back from a prerelease screening of and says is amazing. They say Heath Ledger will win best performance of the year posthumously. Also they say he's the best performance of a comic book character in a movie ever.
So.. Tell me. What do you think about movies this summer?
Shenmock - July 16, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
My bro saw Hellboy 2 a few days ago. He loved it and then saw the first one just last night, haha. Yeah, I wasn't too interested in it, because...I wasn't really interested in it, I guess. xD But personally, The Dark Knight is my big movie of the summer. A few of the showings that are close are already sold out, the midnight show at least... @_@; Yeah, the movie looks pretty friggin' amazing, and...yeah, I've heard that same thing as you, Nights. Everyone's talking about Heath Ledger and his amazing performance...at least they put up something in the credits for him. =/
Zan - July 16, 2008 11:21 PM (GMT)
I haven't seen a lot of summer flicks, but most of the ones Nighthand mentioned are ones I do want to see. There are definitely several good ones on their way (or already out). One I didn't see listed was Hancock. I can't wait to see that one. I'm a sucker for a good superhero flick.
Shenmock - July 16, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
Ya gotta love Will Smith, Zan, especially when he slaughters zombies in I Am Legend, >D. xD Hancock looks pretty good, actually, but I don't think I'm going to be seeing that this summer. Isn't really on my MUST SEE OR I'LL DIE FIFTY BAJILLION TIMES Zan already does that, though, @_@;. So yeah...Hancock looks decent (the reviews weren't too nice to it, >.<), but yeah...
Raven - July 17, 2008 12:23 AM (GMT)
Hancock was awesome, Ironman was the greatest Marvel movie to date, the new Hulk movie made me almost forget there was ever a first one. Get Smart was hilarious, and made me very happy as someone who used to watch reruns of the original series as a kid.
Just looking forward to Dark Knight now, going to see it opening day. I mean, after the anime movie, Gotham Knight, came out last week I'm just really psyched for this.
Stane - July 17, 2008 12:46 AM (GMT)
Divvy in North Carolina is seeing Dark Knight next Tuesday. I can't wait. That's going to be so much fun.
I saw Ironman. The beginning and the flight scenes were really good, but did anyone else notice how they seemed to switch writers half way through? I dunno, that caught me as strange. Oh, and the last line cut a star right off, in my mind. haha.
I saw Hellboy 2. It was pretty good, though I hadn't seen the first one. The visual effects were cool, because it's just hard to make things look good when they're moving that fast. Some of the fight scenes with the main antagonist were awesome. Made me want to be a longarm >_>;. The costumes were cool, and I know this because you forget that everyone's in costume. Oh, and the golden army scene? Holy crap that was cool. I need to go watch that on youtube >_>. Overall, I thought the movie was B-rated. Okay, chill out - it was fine, but honestly. That's the sort of thing you spend an afternoon watching on USA or something. Lots of action, cheap humor, cheesy storyline. Although, it was worth it to see in theaters just for the one scene afore mentioned.
I'll agree. This summer does have a lot of good ones...ah geez. I really need to see Wall-E. Would it kill me to wait until DVD? I'm pretty sure I'm the only one left that hasn't seen it e_e.
Oh, I almost forgot...WHAT WITH THE BLUE FISH AND PALE DEMON GIRL SPAWN LOVE SCENES??? Did anyone else find that....odd? (Hellboy 2, for the unknowns of you).
Magras - July 17, 2008 01:42 AM (GMT)
Dark Knight would've been good, if the car didn't break down on the street the theatre's located x_x
Shugotenshi - July 17, 2008 01:48 AM (GMT)
Wall-E was amazing, really hit home on what future we can choose from. Though it's silly how much politics has caught up into it, many are saying it's socialist propaganda against capitalism. Funny, I prefer to conserve myself. Very good playing out, and seemed to be a unique angle for Disney.
Iron man was pretty good too, and The Dark Knight may be the best batman movie ever. Just the sneak previews and movie poster's I've seen make Joker to be quite out of his "classical" realm from the old series and movie. Truly a deranged madman.
Most movies don't really capture my attention or emotion, but Wall-E and Dark Knight seem to be extraordinary.

The irony here is that when they wrote the script years ago, that wasn't the message of the movie, even though a lot of people are perceiving it as such.
Let's see...
Hellboy II--- Was just as good, if not better than the original
Kung Fu Panda ---- Amazing. The textures used in the animation were surreal. The script wasn't half bad either. Gold star from Dreamworks, which lately has had less than a great record.
Bleach: Memories of Nobody --- Ok, so I'm weird and liked the english release. Good movie though. Guess it's been out for a while, but I saw it in theaters.
Iron Man: Nothing bad can really be said about this movie, it was hillarious
Speed Racer: I gave this movie a chance, and it wasn't half bad. Far off from the quality you would expect from a Wachowski bros. movie, but it wasn't terrible, I've definitely seen worse.
Hancock: Pretty damn good. Not Will Smith's best movie, but still something I'd buy on Blu-ray. I didn't really like the plot twist. Kinda felt a little last-minute.
Rei_00 - July 17, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
I've been to see way more movies than is common for a shut in like me. Iron Man was pretty good, though there wasn't enough focus on the damn suit. I mean, only two fight scenes, come on? Hellboy 2 was great, though I think they tried to hard to make it funny, whereas the original did that by itself. Fights were good, though the villain lacked the cool moves Kronen packed in the first one. Get Smart was pretty good, best part were the cameos from Bill Murray and Patrick Warburton. Speed Racer was a little hard to follow at times, but the races were amazingly well done and very colorful. It's totally worth seeing if only for the fact that he does the pose from the end of the cartoon opening.

Thanks for reminding me about Get Smart. I loved it, and it made me laugh the whole way through.

Well, I'm going to see The Dark Knight tonight with my brother down at one of the big screen theatres a bit of a ways away. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't get the right feeling about the Joker in this movie, but for two reasons.
One, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the first Batman movie with Jack Nickelson (sp?), I thought he did an amazing job as the Joker, so I might be biased. :P
Two, I am very aware that in both this movie and Batman Begins, they were trying to really show how Batman REALLY is and how he was originally in the comics. To that accord, I feel that have done a great job to show how well Batman really is, but I just don't get the same feeling from the Joker. To me, the Joker is an insane fool who finds joy in creating mischeif and what not. The Joker in The Dark Knight, from what I have seen in the previews, just comes off as too...I don't know...calm? Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling he acts too suave and relaxed instead of the crazy psycho that the Joker is.
But none of the less, I'm sure it's going to be a great movie. "Have you ever seen the Devil dance in the pale moon light?" Best quote from the original movie. :D

Honestly, I'll have to agree. I saw Wanted too and, while the story did strike me as having a few holes here and there, I thought it was graphically awe-inspiring and clever. Lyra told me that Wall-E was amazing too, and Ironman was incredible. Ironman seems like the best so far because it touches on some profound issues, as well as its central theme of a man empowering himself and becoming a superhero, not being born or given special powers. I can't wait to see The Dark Knight.

I agree, all of them were good movies, Iron man especially. *drools* =D
Now that they've done Spider-man, Superman, The Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Iron Man, who's next?
I know who...Samuel L. Jackson as Green Lantern. :P Come on, you know it'll happen, even if Samuel L. Jackson might not play the role as good as it could be, it's still Samuel L. Jackson.

Alright then, that is a big relief to me. They should have picked better scenes to showcase that in the previews then. >__>

Samuel L. is Nick Fury.
Anyways, the next superhero movie should probably be Capt. America. I mean, he's the only big hero so far they haven't really tackled, next to the Green Lantern.
They also haven't done a new Wonder Woman yet, though maybe I shouldn't mention that one aloud *shudder*.
strato - July 19, 2008 04:01 AM (GMT)
Well they're supposed to do sequels for Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and then
Thor and
Ant-Man in 2010, and then
Captain America in 2011.
Supposedly, a month or so after "The First Avenger: Captain America", they will all come together for
The Avengers.
That is of course, the Marvel universe. Don't know whether or not DC will start doing more movies after the inevitable success of The Dark Knight.
Raven - July 19, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
Dark Knight was awesome, Ledger nailed the Joker, but you're right, the previews just didn't show the right scenes to prove that. Movie was epic in every sense of the word, and god I want to go see it a second time... and probably will.
Anyone who had second thoughts about it being good or not, go see it. Just do it.

I could not agree more with your statement my good sir. The previews did not do it justice. The movie was AWESOME!!! *cleans up area where he wet himself during it* ^__^
nighthand - July 19, 2008 06:50 AM (GMT)
Not only was Dark Knight one of the best films I've seen in years, but dear god man, the previews! Screw Bolt, even though it looks like Disney copying what Pixar does right. Terminator! Not even that, but The Watchmen! God, that movie looks really, really good.
Raven - July 19, 2008 07:17 AM (GMT)
I knew Watchman was coming out months ago, back when David Hayter mentioned it while teaching my class. The previews just made me want to see it more...too bad we gotta wait until 2009 for it. Oh well, things to look forward to, because, going to see Dark Knight, I was out of movies that really caught my eye, but the previews fixed that right up.
Teishu - July 20, 2008 04:10 AM (GMT)
Saw The Dark Knight this afternoon. It was much darker than the last one...I expected that, but this was one of the darker superhero movies and all that...yeah, I thought it was pretty good and the Joker was pretty incredible at times. 'Twas a long movie, but... (:
Damek - July 20, 2008 04:38 AM (GMT)
I loved Hellboy 2, but I never saw the first one. And I agree that the golden army scene was SICK... and that the romance of the blue guy was strange and pretty unnecessary.
And today!! (Get ready to break out the chick flicks!) I saw Mama Mia and it was amazing. Well, fairly amazing. As in, A but not A+ sort of thing. I just loved how crazy the music and dance scenes were, but I am in love with musicals of all shapes and sizes. But yeah, totally awesome and I need to see the play. I'm way too excited to be singing at work tomorrow.

Do you mean...THE David Hayter?
Just got back from seeing TDN. I liked it, but I've seen better movies.
Things I liked about it:
-Low amount of CG, made it look really realistic
-Action scenes
-The way the Joker Acted, I'll give Ledger this much: Batman was his 9th in terms of acting.
Didn't like:
-Too emo. I know Batman is supposed to be dark, but it was waaay too slow
-Along ^ vein, it was too character-driven rather than story-driven
-For the first few 20 mins of the movie, Batman looked like he had eaten too many donuts. Not talking about the Batman imposters, he just looked a little less than fit.
-Just like Batman Begins, it was far too liberal with the Batman story line than it had a right to be.
-Batman always talked like he was out of breath. Don't like the "batman" voice he does
I know I'ma make a few more enemies in saying this, but I was kind of disgusted at the end of the movie during the credits, when people were clapping when Heath Ledger's name came up, like he was some type of martyr. I respect the dead, and his death is sad, but if any normal man (non-actor) were to keel over tomorrow, due to some type of mistake such as the one that Ledger made, he wouldn't be glorified. Hell, he'd prolly barely make a paragraphs' worth of an obituary. Like I said, he was great in Batman, but not worth a standing ovation when the movie was over.
Arcion - July 20, 2008 01:48 PM (GMT)
With how much it's being pushed on the stations I watch, and given the general genre shown here, I'm suprised there hasn't even been mention of the X files movie that's coming out. I think it's slated for later this month.
It doesn't really peak my intrest, never was much interested in the show, but I would think that someone here would have heard of it.
I'd go to the theater more often, but it's more of a group occasion and it's difficult to gather my local friends to go see something together, and our differing tastes makes picking a movie to see difficult.
I want to see Wall-e in theaters, just for the experience, I keep hearing it's good, but I'll probably end up seeing it on one of the home movie channels like I do most movies. I'm not really into the comic book characters, so things like the Hulk and Batman movies I'm probably going to wait on unless I get invited along. Other movies I might go see just for the 'friends gathering' scene, movies are just more fun to watch with a group.

Yep, that one. He wrote the script for Watchmen, so he brought it up as an example when he was our guest Lecturer. It was a course on adaptation from text to film, so he kind of fit the subject.
Clearing - July 31, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
Dark Knight was awesome. Saw it twice. Was less scared second time, but nyeh.
Going to go see the Hulk this Friday, since...I've been procrastinating. Iron Man I'll see soon too.
Wall-e was adorable in every way, even though it was thin on dialog.
Speaking of Batmans...Not sure if this is true, but if it is...
Shenmock - July 17, 2009 05:04 AM (GMT)
Movies, movies, movies. And there aren't any threads to talk about this other than clan stuff and I'd rather share it with everybody else. Plus, it's a topic that's only a little less than a year old, so no need for a new one, nyeh? ^_^
So what movies of the summer has everybody seen? Transformers was meh, to me at least. T_T And...Harry Potter was good. There were parts that I liked and parts that I felt needed to be inputted (the ending felt anticlimactic <_<), but other than that, pretty solid movie. Kinda weird that they're turning the last one into two movies...
So, probably forgot a bunch, but...yeah, discuss?
Ko_Inuyasha - August 22, 2009 09:37 PM (GMT)
I viewed them as opposite. Transformers rocked and Harry Potter sucked. As far as Harry Potter went, NOTHING happened until the last five minutes and the huge big plot twist wasn't that Snape killed (however you spell his name) but that he's the Half Blood Prince. 0.0 OMG That's what I watched two hours of crap for? That marvelous revelation that wont likely ever be mentioned again through out the series? Wow, joy.
I'm gonna try and see District 9, that looks like it's worth seeing so here's crossing my fingers.

Sekai - August 23, 2009 09:29 AM (GMT)
Because I'm lame that way, I'm going to cheerfully go watch The Final Destination when it comes out in theaters at the end of the month.
Why?
Because I'm a retarded adrenaline junkie and have followed the series for a while, despite how bad and predictable it is at times. XD
Plus, I play a game of "who's going to die by what and how" with myself, sometimes with a friend if I have someone to go with me.
Damek - August 23, 2009 01:43 PM (GMT)
It's not too weird that they're turning the last Harry Potter book into two movies I mean, it's a huge, constant action book... where if you skip something, it kinda... stops making sense, XD. It's totally different from all the other books, imo, though, which'll make them interesting to see...
I've seen a few movies this summer. I must admit, I was terribly disappointed in Ponyo, the new Miyazaki movie... the animation and characterization were fantastic, don't get me wrong, but... worst... ending... ever. That's all I wanna say about that. Oh, well, that and Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas wrecked a perfectly nice, cute, Japanese song.
District 9 was AWESOME. I won't be able to see it again because some of the parts were realy disturbing, but I love to see such a unique movie hit the market. It's totally worth seeing, especially if you like FPS games, lmao.
That movie with the bank robbers was pretty cool... but I can't remember what it was called... >_> I found the gun fights to be too drawn out though.
Shenmock - August 23, 2009 06:16 PM (GMT)
Aww, I was going to go see Ponyo today. T_T; I doubt it'll reach the highs of Spirited Away for me, but...meh, it still looks great.
Oh yeah, and about a week ago I saw UP. Wasn't a huge fan of the story, but I sure found the dogs hilarious. They...kind of imitated mine perfectly. XD
Damek - August 24, 2009 01:24 AM (GMT)
AH UP HOW DID I FORGET UP?!?
Maybe because I saw it opening day >_> and that doesn't feel like summer. I loved it. Lots of people didn't like the story, but I loved it as a whole <3. I absolutely loved Russel and Dug. They were awesome characters.
Ponyo isn't bad, it's really fun... it's just you expect much more from the ending than what's there, that's what I found.
Shenmock - August 24, 2009 01:56 AM (GMT)
Well, now that I've seen it, I can say that I definitely agree with you. It had its moments, but the ending was rather anticlimactic, the credits theme made my ears bleed, and the whole story kinda seemed predictable. =/ Probably my least favorite of his movies, but on a better note the voice acting was good (how is it that teenagers can portray five year olds?! XD) and the animations were awesome as usual.
Isato - August 24, 2009 10:05 PM (GMT)
I might have to go find the movie somewhere, because it isn't available here..
Anyways I ended up watching Harry Potter 6- sucked , transformers 2, Up, G-Force, and GI joe all in 1 day XD, I liked how transformers actually had a plot and for the Joes well it was decent nice to getting to see Snake Eyes in action. Up was funny though I think I fell asleep in the middle of it.
Uruvei - August 26, 2009 07:35 AM (GMT)
Wow, Up was summer? xD It feels so loooong ago... I liked it, but I felt like it was a series of short clips strung together, with a certain continuing thread that eventually told the stories of the main character's lives. It actually reminded me of a sort of animated scrapbook, which I suppose is fitting. Still, I personally would have preferred a stronger plot.
Is anyone going to see 9 when it comes out (on 9/9/09, of course)? It looks cute and interesting, so I'm planning to go with a few friends. I think I'm getting dragged to Zombieland, too, which I automatically hate because it's zombies. -_- We'll see how that goes.
