It was mid spring, the petals of the sakura on the riverside were falling like snow onto the sidewalk below. Koji was walking to school in the morning, the breeze made the petals dance around him as they fell. This was the time of day that Koji cherished. No demands being made of him, no work to do, just walking in the silence and the nice chill brought on by the morning mist, this was his bliss…
“Minamoto-san!” came a voice from behind him, jerking him out of his euphoric state, “Minamoto-san, wait!”
Koji turned around to see his friend and assistant, Natsuki Yuu, running up behind him. Yuu was of medium height, maybe around five foot three inches. He wore glasses over his bright brown eyes and his black hair was cut in a layered fashion. His skin was always a little bit lighter than Koji. Koji noticed that Yuu was being fallowed by, Takahashi Hikaru, another friend from his class. Taller than Yuu, towering at five feet nine and a half inches, Hikaru was the palest of them all. His dark eyes, well styled hair and body from all the working out that he did made up for it though. He was the more muscular one from the group, though looking at him you would think that he stayed inside at all hours.
“Ohayo gozaimasu!
Hey Yuu,
how are you.” Koji joked in English, one of the many subjects that he did well in.
“Ohayo, and representative Minamoto, that joke is older than my mother, as a mater of fact she uses it when I get home, it’s not very distinguished for you to use it,” Yuu stated, pointing and scolding his boss.
“And just how am I suppose to ignore it when you have a name like that Natsuki-kun,” Koji teased waiting for the others to catch up to him. His initial bliss may have been interrupted, but he enjoyed hanging out with his friends just as much.
“Ohayo Minamoto-san” Hikaru said as they caught up to Koji giving him a high five. “I can’t believe we have gym and an assembly today, how boring!”
“Think it’s boring for you, remember Takahashi-kun, I’m the one that’s still working during the assembly. You get to take it easy,” Koji joked around, poking Hikaru in the arm. Minamoto was his class’ representative, giving him a lot more work and responsibility than other students. But by being on the student counsel he had a little more freedom and leniency on a few things. The group turned to cross a bridge, leaving the sakura behind, Koji yawned as they walked on.
“Ahhhhh, what’s that? Is the great class representative Minamoto-san tired? What did you do? Stay up all night playing games?” Hikaru teased, Koji looked at him with a grumpy face.
“Minamoto-san, It’s not true is it?” Yuu questioned frantically almost dropping one of the folders he was carrying, and having to push his glasses back up his nose. Koji noticed and knew that his assistant wouldn’t stop fretting until he said something.
“No way… I don’t play games all that much. Don’t really have enough time to get games and actually get into them,” Koji said putting his hands to the nape of his neck, looking at the sky. He watched the clouds as they blew past, feeling the wind as it swept by. One cloud was shaped like a heart, another shaped like the face of a clock.
“Don’t have the time? All you have is time! What do you do at home other than homework man? You have to loosen up before you start ******* diamonds,” Hikaru said, putting his arm around Koji’s shoulders, “Karaoke, tonight!”
“I wish,” Koji whispered to himself. Koji envied his friend Hikaru, a carefree otaku that miraculously didn’t look like one at all. He had a girl friend that he just so happened to meet over the Internet, then at a comic convention. Koji was the rep of class 7-a at Mizuno Junior High in the greater Tokyo area. His school life was; work in class, work before and after class, and Kendo Club. His home life consisted of; Homework, chores, and if he has free time he would read. He ends up getting grounded if he gets anything less than a B+.
As they got across the bridge they could see there school and heard the five-minute warning bell ring. They started to sprint, Yuu in the lead with Hikaru and Koji neck in neck for second. “How are you able to run so fast Natsuki-kun, you’re a desk jockey!” Hikaru taunted. Koji laughed as Yuu started to fume at these words. Yuu finished first and Hikaru pulled ahead just before reaching the school gates. Hikaru and Koji were bending over catching their breath; of course Hikaru was standing straight before Koji. “You lose Minamoto-san, that means you get to buy the snacks at lunch,” Hikaru sneered, “That makes ten for ten, we’re tied.”
“You’re going down tomorrow Takahashi-kun,” Koji stated as the three of them hurried into the school to their lockers to take off their shoes, “and don’t you think by now we should all just call each other by our first names? Just call me Koji I hate all the formality, after all I get enough of it at home.”
“Ok Koji, I’ll agree with you there, but tomorrow I’m going to break the tie in my favor, not yours,” Hikaru said with a grin. He finished at his locker and ran ahead to the classroom. “See you guys in a bit.”
“I’m your assistant at school Minamoto-san, but we can be informal when hanging out,” Yuu said smiling, “By the way, I have the copy of the speech you made yesterday here, and the papers that you need to look over before class starts, we have the assembly first right after initial announcements…”
By the end of the day Koji was too worn out to manage. He had to give a speech right off in the morning. Then in between first and second period he had to talk to five classmates about their grades and try to assist them. Then gym, following that after lunch he had to speak with two other students about getting the last payments of their tuition in before the weekend. He then ended the day with kendo practice. He was sore, sweaty, and tired.
With his bag over his shoulder, he was making his way to the front gate where Yuu and Hikaru where suppose to be waiting for him with the remainder of the snacks he bought at lunch. On the way though, he heard a voice around the corner from him. As soon as he recognized whom it was, he hid next to the corner, just daring to take a peek and see whether or not he was right, and he was. The one he heard was Taiki Ayumu.
Taiki-chan was a member of the martial arts club as well as the class rep for class 7-b. The first time he saw her was at the first class rep meeting of the year. She had raven black hair that was pulled up into a bun, except for her bangs, like that of Riza Hawkeye, one of her favorite anime characters. Her eyes were deep brown and her complexion was quite fair. She was about five foot two inches, and Koji was smitten at first sight.
"Yeah, (delta) plenteous-her-cabbage, that’s where I got it," came the voice of the tan blond to Taiki’s right.
"I can’t believe you found that Item before me! I'm so jealous," said the pale girl to Taiki’s left.
"So we'll all meet in delta and go to theta at seven tonight and go to hidden-smiling-remnant right?” a small alarm rang in Taiki’s purse and she took out her cell phone, “I have to get going to piano practice," Taiki groaned, “see you,” she said to her friends waving goodbye as she ran off.
Koji’s head was spinning, what was theta? Those other words just seemed like random gibberish. Was theta a nightclub? Was Taiki into that sort of thing? He looked around the corner as the other two turned out of the school gate. He came around the corner and walked toward the front gate, until he was grabbed from behind by Hikaru.
“What was that? Is our noble class rep spying on his female classmates? My, my, how shameful.” Hikaru said giving him a little noogie, he let Koji go while he was laughing.
Koji was blushing; he had just been caught eavesdropping on the girl he was crushing over. “Well… Ok yeah I was listening to them… I couldn’t understand a word of it, but now I know that Taiki-chan plays the piano,” Koji ended his statement smiling and holding up his pointer finger, trying to make it all sound just with a mater-of-fact tone in his voice.
“Koji-san, you're sounding almost like a stalker.” Yuu pointed out giving his friend a nudge in the ribs. The three of them laughed as they began to walk out of the gate and down the road to the train station.
“And what do you mean you don’t know what they were talking about, are you telling me that you’re the one, in a million kids, that doesn’t play ‘The World’?” Hikaru asked.
“Wait a minute, you know what they were saying?” Koji answered his friend with a new question. His eyes were gleaming, it looked as though he’d do anything to learn something more about Taiki. Questiones rang through his head, questions like; what was ‘The World’? Where could he get it? How could he meet Taiki like her friends were doing in a video game?
“Well yeah, there going to a location on the theta server tonight at seven in ‘The World’,” Hikaru answered his friend with an eyebrow raised, “Man, don’t you even own a computer?” Hikaru explained that “The World” was a game where people play together in a virtual community and described the separate root towns in each server.
“Yeah, but remember I don’t play games… Well, I mean, I didn’t play games,” Koji said slyly, “Hikaru, you have to take me to where I can buy a copy of this game, c’mon I’m begging here,” he attempted to coerce his friend.
“Whoa, simmer down there, lover-boy. I’ll take you to get one if you treat us to McDonalds,” Hikaru ended smiling in Koji’s direction. The one thing you could always count about Hikaru was that his stomach was a bottomless pit that never got bigger on the outside no-matter how much he ate.
“Scam artist! You do anything for food, but fine I’ll buy,” Koji interjected, all he could think of at the moment was getting that game, remembering the time and place, and going to see Taiki in this game. In real life he knew he was way too shy to talk to her, but in a game where he could remain anonymous, seemed his best chance to get to know her, though it seemed silly, he was after all very shy.
After a while Koji returned home carrying some quite large bags, they contained everything that Hikaru said he’d need to play the game. As he walked in his mother came around the corner to greet him, she was about the same height he was and had long brown hair that she kept braded over her left shoulder, he had gotten his dark green eyes from her, his complexion as well. “Welcome home Koji, your father hasn’t returned yet, did you have a good day at-,” she ended when she saw the shopping bags, “What is this, is this why you were out so late?”
“Mom, schools only been out for about an hour and a half,” Koji tried to reason with his mother who was standing in the doorway to the kitchen with a wooden spoon.
“You mean just about two hours ago, I hope you at least did your homework already, it’s getting too late to do it now.” She looked at him through half closed eyes. Luckily he was smart enough to do his homework at the restaurant while hearing more about the game from Hikaru.
“Yes I did my homework already, and I ate already too before you tell me about dinner, ok?” Koji stated with a smile as he finished taking off his shoes and tried to get upstairs.
“Stop, Oh I wasn’t going to mention dinner, cause fist I was going to mention that I’ll be in your room in five minutes to see that its clean,” She smiled a victory smile as she turned to go back into the kitchen, “And whatever that is that you bought better have a place to be stored out of the way or it’s tossed.”
Koji ran up to his room and looked around, the only things out of place were his pajamas that he forgot to place in the dirty clothes bin when he woke up. He quickly scooped them up and took them to the closed hamper; all he could think about again was getting the game setup.
By the time he was finished cleaning his room and his mom had come through for inspection, it was already going on 6:30pm. His new neuro goggle FMD was neatly placed hanging off the front of his terminal. The software for “The World” had been installed so the disk, boxes and bags were placed neatly into ether his closet or his garbage. As soon as he appeared free he went onto the computer and opened the registration for the game.
It asked him to make a screen name for his character. He just thought off of the top of his head, Watorie, because it sounded like the English word water, and he had a bottle of water in his hand. As lame as that was, he continued putting in his name and chose the class called, wavemaster, the class that Hikaru said would be the best. Saying that everyone needed a wavemaster at sometime even though it wasn’t the favorite choice of character. It then gave him a small screen for customizing and editing his avatar. He got through this step quickly. Using his favorite colors for clothing and giving it his own hair and eye color the selection seemed pretty limited but he liked his finished product.
He made it with long sleeves and long pants colored navy with gold trimmings and a gold zipper, along with two gold brooches on ether side of the chest. He added a large leather belt with plate armor hanging off it, also trimmed with gold. And the long pants had a design intermingled with the trim at its cuffs. Koji added gloves with no fingers, made of dark brown leather. He also put on comfortable looking cloth boots with leather soles. Koji made the skin very pale and the hair was layered down and long, pulled into a ponytail. Finishing it off he added emerald green eyes that stood out from the rest of the color scheme.
When it asked for confirmation on all the information he had entered he clicked yes, his registration was sent and he got back a small message. “Welcome to ‘The World’.”
