Title: New Mainplot Site
Description: Since the old one poofed...

nighthand - February 21, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
It's been batted around for some time, but it's finally here, spurred on by the poofing of the previous url, glasscharm.org. Mainplot now has a new site!

http://divergencerp.org/ <- This is the Portal, a temporary page that will eventually contain links to important documents such as NISDIP, the Ultimate FAQ, and of course the two sites.

Main's forum itself is http://divergencerp.org/divergence/index.php

Change your bookmarks, alert an Admin for site-based links that have to be changed, and Mainers, let's get back into the swing of things. Anyone can feel free to post thoughts for the portal page (and if anyone knows phpbb v3 and wants to come up with skins, PM me)

Enjoy!

Wow, good job on that portal page, whoever did that! :D

Credit goes to Dien for that one.

Nice job Dien, and Nighthand. :)

Er, it kind of looks like Natsume's arms are turning into tentacles... >_>
xP But I like it. It's good to know the server should be stable now.

I guess Subs is too big to fit on it, too?

KamiKazeKiwi3 - April 3, 2008 10:28 PM (GMT)
In theory, it would be trivial to fit Subs there. Rather, we cannot transfer the board easily (though I could certainly make it possible), and we just tend to have separate boards. Space is not the limitation, though. Bandwidth would also be a concern.

Bandwidth might not be as big a concern as you might think. >.> I have a monthly transfer volume of 1.2 terabytes. Main on a busy month uses a thousandth of that.

Really the only things stopping the transfer are a) tradition (as this host has been decent enough over the years, and there's a lot ingrained on the servers) and b) hassle. While Kiwi readily insists he could make it possible to transfer from the subs domain to the main domain, it would be akin to a post-by-post transfer, rather than the nice sql backup file that main's system allows me to take. This is because Invisionfree doesn't have a nice backup utility built in... Why, I'm not really sure, since I can't really see the harm in having it. But anyways.

It's probably not built in because they don't want it to be done... I hate it when companies try to manipulate their users.

Correct. Everything would have to be transferred over through the use of one sophisticated bot, rather than having a smooth database transfer. It's very likely the backup option is removed to prevent rival services from taking advantage of IF, while at the same time, keeping people stuck (akin to "vendor lock-in").
