Title: Hackers
Shenmock - September 10, 2007 03:11 AM (GMT)
I have gone to an area recently and seen a hacker there, almost destroying me. I really want to find answers to what happened back there so I need keywords for any place that hackers have been sighted or seen in.
I just want answers right now...
Thank you.

Be grateful that you didn't lose your character data and just leave it alone. Normal players should avoid the hackers and uber cheats altogether.

If something odd happens, a hacker did it. Yeah, you'd think CC would do something about the amount of hackers sighted around these days. No offense to them, but I've seen more than my fair share. Like what Ko said, usually it's not exactly good to go out and look for them, you know =/

Hackers? In The World?! LOL
...
...oh, you're serious. Well, I can say that most of the more important data on CC Corp's servers is ridiculously hard to hack (they have an entire team of analysts paid to do nothing but figure out new ways to get through and then figure out how to close those holes - that's the patch we get every month or so). So far as I know, there haven't been any major security breaches in The World since its inception. No need to worry about having your character data deleted or anything like that unless you manage to piss off a system admin.
Not to say that there aren't hackers in The World, I'm just saying that they can't do any damage that an admin can't undo. They do have access to all the frequent backups, so if you ever encounter any problems, you can contact one of them to have your character data reset to a previous saved point. Granted, you'll lose all progress from before that point, but that's essentially what happens if someone PKs you.
Alternately, you could make friends with some hackers in The World (or pay them off) in exchange for some kind of protection. Personally, I'd prefer to side with the admins, as they are generally more forgiving of those on their side than of those who are in leagues with hackers.
EDIT: Oh, and if you do spot a hacker in a field? Come let me know in the Mac Anu Pawn Shop. I get commission for highlighting them for deletion, and could probably also get you a discount in the shop for it.

Although many frown upon it, I find the idea of hacking fun. To be able to manipulate data at will sounds like a good time to me. Don't get me wrong, i like to play a fair game as much as the next person, but have you ever found yourself looking for cheat codes for games on other consoles? The point of cheating is to make that particular thing more interesting. The main point, aside from interest, is to have an advantage. To have some sort of upper hand that nobody else has and makes you feel superior. In the end that's all anybody really wants. Especially so with video games. Not just that, but everyday life. Do you not like to feel superior? Would you want to be a president or a CEO of some major company? It's all about power, my friends.
I'm sorry guys, but I'm going to have to side with the hackers on this one.

((This is an in character thread so leave your out of character opinion out of it. Don't preach about the freedom of speech either when you're tell people not to voice their opinion against you either.))
Yuuki-chan - June 17, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
((I am preaching in no way. Excuse me if I am being rude. In all honesty I am just trying to avoid a ban, by backing it up with some sort of reason.))

((OOC:
Anymore boasts of what you think you can and can not do and I won't hesitate to ban you. I'm already tempted to do it as it is. You've officially earned yourself a close eye via the Divergence staff. Watch your words, from now on.
:OOC))
Yuuki-chan - June 17, 2008 05:11 AM (GMT)
((That is what i was trying to avoid. I mean no harm and im not boasting. Please back off. Apparently people take things way too seriously here. I might just leave of my own free will. ))
((I feel special now. Thanks Zan.))

((Our job here on staff is not to threaten or flame, but merely to remind you as to the repercussions of your actions. While I realize you were merely attempting to inform us of your activities and level thereof in your OOC comment, you also have to bear in mind that we here on Div love this board. Mentioning that you can "take it down in a day or so", while maybe not intended as a threat, is not something that one should say to a community of people who care so strongly about it. It'd be like walking up to a priest and saying "I can dispute everything your religion says."
Having said that, be more aware of what you are saying, please. Lord knows we will be. Like I said, it isn't our job to threaten or flame, but rather to culture a community in which everyone can have fun. Be mindful of that, okay?
Oh, and so this thread doesn't become horribly off topic...))
-------
I for one don't know entirely where I stand on this issue. Sure, there are hackers who are only out there to beat the system, but I have heard stories of people who go outside the system to help the players. There are people who called Orca and Balmung hackers when they first did what they did, and look how we look up to them now. That might seem a bit random, but all I am saying is that people are often labeled without their intentions being known.
Maybe the help us in some ways.

((OOC:
I won't 'back off.' As a person in a position to protect this forum, I can do whatever I damn well please when it comes to people talking about their 'hacking' skills. You aren't the first we've gotten rid of because of it. As I'm sure you can tell by my tone, I - and a lot of people who love this place - don't take kindly to statements like yours. It doesn't matter how innocent you believe it to be.
So here's what you're going to do. You're going to drop it. If you have any more superfluous comments, you can send them to my PM box. Continuing this argument will bring about a ban, if only to make an example out of you.
I'd rather not have to. As a member, this nonsense aside, you seem to have potential. Let's keep it that way.
Again: If you have anything else to say, PM me. Let's not waste the other members' space here.

I've heard of them as well, despite me being an absolute newbie to the world. I don't know much though.
((please kill this thread, its embarrassing))

Someone else started this thread, so it's staying up. Just keep to the topic.

There are a lot of hackers around. I seem to run into a ridiculous number of them, actually. No idea why.
But here's the thing... so far, none of them have done any serious harm. In fact, the one time my character data was almost damaged by one, it was an accident! I just happened to wander into a field that he was playing around with, and almost got myself stuck in an infinite loop. And what did he do about it? He helped me escape. x3
So... I guess so far I haven't had any major reason to hate hackers. It just gets annoying when perfectly good fields get screwed up because someone wanted to practice their computer skills. And a few people I've known have had their character data modified some in unwanted ways by hackers... but still nothing serious. The one and only time I've ever heard of someone's character actually being crippled beyond repair happened a long, looong time ago - I think that was before CCCorp started doing more frequent backups.
In short...? You're probably not in too much danger. At least... not from the typical run-of-the-mill hacker. People like Mr. Amethyst can probably take care of them for you if they're being a pain. There are plenty of other things in The World that you should watch out for that are worse than Hackers.
EDIT: Oh yeah, you asked for keywords. Umm... Delta: Nameless Snowflake's Widow was where I met the guy with the infinite loop. But I'm pretty certain that he removed all traces of his modifications to the fields after that incident. ^^; Didn't want someone else to accidentally wander into it.
I also just did a quick search of the BBS, and I came across a mention of hackers in Delta: Reincarnated False Fallen Angel. I can't really vouch for the accuracy of that, since I haven't been there myself, but it might be something.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help! :\
