Server 1 Board Owners,
We regret to inform you that we will not be able to recover additional data from Server 1's failed hard drive. We understand that this news comes as a surprise, as it was a shock to us as well.
When the hard drive failed, we began working with the datacenter that provides our servers to determine the cause. Once it was determined that it was more than a simple failure we made the decision to have them remove the hard drive and ship it to one of the top data recovery firms in the country. Based on all signs at this point we felt that a full recovery of missing data was likely.
The data recovery company was able to access the data on the hard drive they received from the datacenter. However, based on the data they recovered, it soon became clear to us that the hard drive was not ours.
Over the last several weeks, we have come to understand that the wrong hard drive was sent by the datacenter. Once we informed them of their error they began to search for our hard drive. Unfortunately due to the limited inventory information they keep on this type of hardware, they were unable to locate the drive. We have recently been informed that they believe that it was mistakenly returned to a manufacturer.
Obviously this is not the news you had hoped to hear. We understand that for many of you and your members, the information lost is irreplaceable.
As you are our among oldest users, we truly regret the inconveniences this incident has caused you and your members. As a staff, we would like to thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions please open a support ticket with the title "Server 1 Question" and our staff will route it directly to our management team.
Sincerely, Brandon Kopetzky and the InvisionFree.com Management Team |
To sum up:
- The data is permanently gone unless you wanna go digging through archives and such.
- The loss of data was not the fault of the Invisionfree staff.
- We are not going to move to a new website for the time being.
- It's time to start moving on.
If you have any quests or posts that were lost in this failure, we apologize for the inconvenience, but ask that you pick up where their backups left us off. Yes, it is nine months old now, but it's better than nothing. As of now, I'm going to go ahead and say the two-quests-at-a-time rule is no longer in effect, so finish up the quests you have going, and return to one quest at a time.
Please post questions, comments, rants, and death threats here.

Just as a side note, for anyone who lost permanent data to the crash: always back up quests, purchases, and all other important articles on MSWord or (for picture screenshots) a local .jpg storer, like Photoshop or Jasc. I lost the final copy of a few quests I've done to the crash, and some I had deleted from my old files when I transferred computers. Anything that you want kept secure, it's best to keep it with you, in a little directory off to the side, so that if you ever need it, you do indeed have it.
I'm sure most of us who lost quests, etc., have them backed up anyway, but just as a reminder, it never hurts. A few megabytes, tops, for all your data? I'd put it away.
On a non off-topic note, I kinda felt like this was going to happen. It happened to servers 4 and 8 when they switched to extra-backup servers (...z4,z8...) and they couldn't retrieve that data, either. Albeit, it was much smaller of a dropout... about a month in the past, and not nearly on such a large, user-populated server such as server one. I was hoping, but... hey, what can you do?
What really sucks isn't the loss of individual little things, as they can usually be replaced, but it's the posterity of Divergence that was most damaged. That's a lot of activity, a lot of time that went by in people's lives, lost to data crash.
*sigh*
Oh well.
Just gotta suck it up and get a move-on.
Divvy still lives. ^_^
Belisaria - January 16, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
Well... That is indeed most unfortunate. Well... Divvy does indeed live on.
Hacorie - January 16, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
Very Unfortunate, however. Divergence is still alive, and I think it is about time that I come back from my leave of absence. Since there is nothing we can do about the data, we must move on. So yeah......that was one of those things where the response is most likely to be :duh: haha....but someone has to say it, eh?
lugiablaster - January 16, 2007 10:09 PM (GMT)
Live... how losely are we using that term?
Just a thought.
Yep, so some old data's been deleted. Oh no. *looks around his junk* Nothing important. *walks away*

A.K.A. "they dropped it in the toliet".
Yeah, this whole situation really sucks. I feel especially bad for you guys that lost all that work. I joined a couple weeks before the crash, so my profile is gone and a quest. The people that had clan quests and huge stuff going on are the ones I feel for.
Like my mom always says: "BREAK LIGHTS!!!"

Honestly I find this slightly ironic. I mean, what's our game based on? An anime/game series/novel series/etc. about a game that tends to involve bad or corrupt data. Crashes and hackers aren't uncommon either. And lo and behold, WHAM. Server one goes wonky. Thankfully I haven't been very active recently so I didn't lose much (Aside from clan quest), but my sympathies go out to those of you who did. But you know what? What Would Rayo Do (WWRD for future reference)? Fry a few noobs and make a couple ellipsis' and keep going. I'm gonna be nice and leave out the noob frying, but here's the ellipsis for good luck.

Okay, I'm done. Let's get life back on track. d-^.^
Ko_Inuyasha - January 17, 2007 04:23 AM (GMT)
-_- I seriously hope that invisionfree learns from this mistake and learns TO MAKE SURE THEY KEEP FUCKING TRACK OF THEIR INVENTORY. I mean come on?! It's inventory, that's like the first thing that should be on your list of things to do. A few check sheets and a labler, it isn't that hard her people. I've got 15 year olds that I let do my inventory and you don't see me loosing 40lbs of primerib on a Friday night.
Jpec07 - January 17, 2007 07:36 AM (GMT)
One thing, Ko, just one thing: Invisionfree isn't in charge of how the server farm keeps their inventory. As an entity, Invisionfree is entirely based on the internet. The owner, Brandon, was renting server space at a server farm, and they effed up. Invisionfree moved to a new server farm (or data center, as they call it), and has taken numerous steps to ensure that this never happens again. It isn't their fault.
Raquar - January 17, 2007 07:42 AM (GMT)
Its over with and done with. Absolutely nothing we can do. Use the time we spent bitching to quest and level up and it won't be a bloody issue.
Ko_Inuyasha - January 17, 2007 07:45 AM (GMT)
well then alter Invisionfree to the serverfarm that they were using. It's just plain irresponcible.

Since the duels were lost, is the unofficial tournament going to continue? Reboot (new call for attendies)? Be forgotten about? I know Xan, Sekai and I's duel was taking a long time and we actually called a stop to it just before the crash, so I'd like to know what's going on with it.
Raven - January 17, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
...and our duel seemed to come to a standstill when Hax stopped posting for a very long time...
Jpec07 - January 17, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
The unnofficial tournament has died down and out, unfortunately. If people can remember what they'd given me for it for rewards, please PM me and I'll return it to you (that information was also lost in the crash, unfortunately).
Arinyes - January 17, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
Ah well... good thing I keep a personal copy of my character stashed on local drive... I can repost the quests I did to a degree (I shared one with someone else, whose entries I got too, but had to kick him cause of a lack of his interest)... but...
I lost my mental daughter logs, which I had considered safe to solely keep on divvy... that for the fact I have a nosy brother and some other curious folks who seem bent on enjoying to read through most things private on my harddisk.
Guess that means I have to scratch a couple of quests I had been working on, though... maybe... Not sure about that yet. Well, I'll work it out... just goes to show how important good archive personell is. Wonder whether they have an open position... I wouldn't mind solicite for it... :P
By the by... are the smileys gonna come back? I've a list as long as my arm of names of people I'd like to zap... B)
EDIT: WTF!? When did I get assigned Drama Queen!? I never did that!! *hollers over her shoulder at her personal secretary* Get ready for another name!
Uruvei - January 18, 2007 12:30 AM (GMT)
Argh. Lesson learned. I'll be doing double backups from here on out of anything that seems important. >_<; But what's the "digging through archives" business? If there's any way I can salvage any more of the Advent Dynasty's first big quest, I wanna know about it (we have, like, three pages out of six right now, I think).
Jpec07 - January 18, 2007 01:05 AM (GMT)
Google's cache file, the wayback machine, etc. For more information,
KamiKazeKiwi3 - January 18, 2007 06:04 AM (GMT)
Actually, most of those things don't work. The Wayback Machine has been avoiding Divergence for a while now, although I'm not sure why. That means that nothing shows up for any recent dates. In particular, the Wayback Machine chokes because of the way threads are numbered on IF boards. Few of them get copied to begin as a result. Google doesn't cache farther the first page on a thread and has been destroying most of the caches recently. Yahoo uses an older version of Google's search technology and they have issues.
I have some threads and things, because I already automatically dug through everything Google has and have older copies of the whole board. However, I do feel InvisionFree is to blame to an extent. IF refuses to give boards access to user data, which would allow each administrator to ensure his or her board won't be lost if they mess up. You might argue that they have to make sure people can't move their data to other board services. If you move, you have to give up your data (actually, there are ways around that too). However, IF could easily implement backups that can't be read outside the IF server. That way, administrators get their data and IF keeps its business. Certainly, that doesn't change anything in the present, but it's worth thinking about the fact that they could have done that and saved us a lot of trouble. They could right now, and probably won't.

Wow, some of my quests are gone...Oh well. Such as life right? No offence to the people who lost much of their character data and such, I'm only speaking upon my opinion. I am kinda sad that my quests are gone though.
And you all are right, Divvy indeed does still live.
Uruvei - January 26, 2007 02:42 AM (GMT)
Hm. The Google thing works a little bit. Too bad searching for thread URLs does NOT work. -__-; T'would make it easier.
