Speech therapy was at its end, and Daniel was very anxious to make his way home. He had made a tiny dent in his muteness, as he could begin to make a sound that came out kind of like an "a". The ride home was too long for his liking, as he waited impatiently to get to "The World". Daniel was running through his mind his latest quest, which had been quite the success. Should I go on another quest? What if no one wants to come with me again? It wouldn’t be wise to go alone. The car pulled into the garage, and the large metal door closed behind them. A few toxic gases were trapped before the car could be turned off, but nothing life threatening. Blasting out of the vehicle, up the stairs, and into his room, Daniel sat at his computer desk and hurriedly logged into his game. Appearing in Mac Anu as his one-of-a-kind character, Joker wanders aimlessly for something to pass his time.

During his stroll, Joker hears people speaking about dueling. Fighting against other players? That seems interesting. Maybe I should join the craze. Snooping in on someone’s conversation, Joker learns that there is no prize awarded, that it is all for the fun of it. This could be a way to prove myself. If I can beat a lot of people, maybe others will want to quest with me! Joker went to each group, sending messages if he could join them. Each time he got a weird look, followed by complete silence until he left. If only I could speak like everyone else. This was a common problem that arose with him. Seeing as he couldn’t speak, many thought he was just acting snooty and not answering.

As he pouted about no one letting him join, and idea came to Joker. If they won't let me come with them, I will just create my own. He went back to the board and posted another message, this time about something that he hoped would be answered. I can always adventure alone, but I can't fight myself Wandering through the rush of people, he rushed to be the next one through the Chaos Gate. Entering the keywords for his destination, the swirling rings that he had come to love surrounded him. Man, those are cool. As he gated out to the field, he turned back to se many players crowding the message board. Maybe one of them will answer my challenge The note was crisp, clear, and to the point:

If anyone would like to have a friendly fight, make your way to Voluptuous Her Aqua Field. I will be awaiting you.

Assimilating in the field, Joker was quite pleased with his choice area. It was kind of like a grassland, but had trees sprouting up in all kinds of places. Those should provide decent cover. Checking his map, Joker made absolutely sure there were no enemies or a dungeon to hide in. Again, he was happy with the results. Nothing that will affect the outcome. Just the way I had hoped for. Heading over to the tallest tree in sight, he climbed it's ashy trunk and perched on a branch. He felt a slight pain in his head, but decided to ignore it. Probably the after effects of the carbon monoxide. Should wear off soon. Joker awaited the arrival of a challenger, chills running through his spine. This should prove interesting.

The slight ache grew into an enormous migraine. Come on, I just got here. Removing his VR helmet, Daniel stepped down the stairs, almost collapsing in pain. Going as fast as he could, he reached for the medicine cabinet and pulled out pain-relievers. This should take the edge off. Popping three pills in his mouth, he gulped down water to help aid the passing of them through his body. As he was about to head up to his room, Daniel’s little brother came out of the kitchen. “Mom wants you to do the dishes!” Why now?! I have to get back before someone takes the initiative and destroys me. Rinsing the dishes, Daniel slid them into the dishwasher in a blaze of movement. His mom hugged him from behind, planting a kiss on his cheek. “Thank you Daniel.” Grinning sheepishly, he made his way back to his computer and slipped into virtual reality. As he re-appeared, he noticed a man below. What luck! Looks like I am having me a fight!

Darkness. Everything was in darkness. A light whooshing sound and Link slid to the right. There was a clanking noise as Brave’s spear hit the floor. Link smiled and backflipped. In the real world Geo had gotten corrective eye surgery so was temporarily blind. Link had been modified to reflect that, and so now wore bandages around his eyes. As an added touch they were bloody. Because of this disadvantage Brave and Krystal were taking the opportunity to making Link’s practice miserable. An arrow whizzed past his ear as he sidestepped another slash from Brave.
“Aw come on guys, lighten up,” he said in frustration.
“What’s the matter? Can’t handle a little girl?” Krystal shot from across the room.
“Now that’s not nice, Brave just has a small package,” Link replied. A vein throbbed in Brave’s temple as everyone else laughed uproariously. “Anything new on the BBS, Tatiana?” Link asked walking to where she was. Having declined to join in the melee she had been watching the boards for anything interesting.
“Gas prices are up,” she replied.
“Tell me something I don’t know,” Link quipped.
“Sale on eggs at gas-e-mart.”
“Uh, I think I’ll pass.”
“Someone wants a fight,” Tatiana stated excitedly.
“That I can dig,” Link replied standing up.
“Are you sure you should be fighting when you can barely see at all?” Krystal questioned.
“I know what I’m doing,” Link answered. He walked out of the base and flipped his hood up to shield his recovering eyes. Mac Anu was, as usual, crowded beyond what he though was the bandwidth limit of the server. He had a rough time navigating through the people over to the Chaos Gate, but he finally managed to reach it. It hummed lightly in response to Link being close. He entered the keywords and, even though he couldn’t see them, felt the three golden rings descend around him. The normal darkness didn’t go away as he entered the field, but the warm sun on his face and the rustling of trees in a breeze let him know he was there. He kept his hood up, partially to keep his face shadowed and partially to protect his eyes. He felt, rather than knew, someone else was already there.
“Hello, is anyone around?” he called. His hand rose automatically to his strange sword across his back. The sound of metal sliding on metal was music to his ears, and for the first time he realized he was at a big disadvantage for this fight. His coat flapped in a gust as he stood there and waited for something to happen.

(ooc-sorry to hear that Virage. maybe another time)

A slight hum echoed through the field, as a man appeared in the field. He was of the character class Blademaster, shown by his extremely well-manufactured blade. Peering down at the competitor, Joker couldn't help but ponder why he wore a hood. He is like me, covering his face. Only to a lesser extent. Hopping down from the tree, he went over and joviously shook the player's hand. Sending a quick message, he backed away and prepared for combat. Glad to meet you. Before we get this underway, let's exchange player addresses. Hope you don't mind my quietness. He hurriedly sent his address, unable to wait for this battle to get underway. Sliding his Silver Axe from it's resting place across his back, Joker set himself for the first move.

Catching a glance at the character's face, Joker noticed that a large bandage covered his eyes. Oh, poor guy. He can't see. I am slightly tempted to go easy on him. Wait, no. His other senses are stronger. He can probably hear my every move. His adrenaline rose tom its peak, and the fight was on! Quickly signing out the letters for a spell, Joker sent his favorite spell on a crash course with the blind guy. JukRom! A whirlwind of trees came swirling towards the player his screen identified as Link. As the casting went flying towards him, Joker took the initiative to form another attack. Running to the side of the tornado, Joker sped ahead to beat the storm to the punch.

As he approached Link, Joker lifted his mighty axe into the air, intenmt on an early kill. Sorry buddy, this is the way it has to be. Seeing as how his weapon had no skill of its own, he decided to make his own. Holding the axe with one arm, Joker swung it around as if he were performing the shot put. As the distance between himself and Link lessened, he used the momentum to slam his blade in the direction of his enemy. Looking back, he gladly noted that he still had enough time to avoid his own spell. Good.

((ooc: just to let you know, im Link.))

Link smiled at the coutesey of his opponent. He couldn't see, but he knew this was a strong player who seemed to have been through unimaginable trauma. He heard the "ding" of a recieved message, and his smile faded.
"I'm sorry, but I'm currently a little handicapped. But after this is done maybe we can exchange our user addresses." Then there was another tone. This one recognized that a user had sent you their member address. "Nevermind," Link said sending his quickly. He paused for a minute as his ears perked up. He heard the sound... of a juk rom spell. He quickly backflipped and time seemed to slow down as several tree branches flew inches from his body. He landed on his hands then flipped onto his feet with th grace of a leopard. That spell was the least of his worries, as he was about to find out.

He had heard footsteps from his right, and had barely managed to get his sword in a passable defensive position when he was smacked into by what felt like an axe. His sword took the brunt of the blow, but he was still knocked off his feet. He'll pay for that Link thought. He quickly got to his feet and realized his old tactics wouldn't work. He had to rethink his stratagy. First was this guy was an axeman, they were immensly strong and could take massive beatings. That meant he'd have to strike fast and hard, if he managed to find him. Second was humans were 85% sight dependant, and he was sight defficient at the moment. His senses had never failed him before, however.

He caught a whiff of... rubber... on the breeze. he didn't question why, he just dashed at where the scent originated. He whipped his blade around, praying to god he would hit something, and hoping he didn't get chopped in half by the guy's axe. But from the clang their weapons made when they collided it sounded like he had a silver axe, indicating he was a low level player. This might not be so hard after all.

(ooc- sorry bout the confusion)

As the spell had failed, Joker had tried an attack instead. Link had amazing agilty, even for having no eyesight. He ceases to amaze me. Swinging his blade with all his might, his attack had failed to connect with the opposition, as Link had parried his blow. To Joker's pleasure however, it had knocked him off his feet. Disappointingly though, Link was back up and on the offensive in no time. Using the senses that still remained, he sniffed out Joker and struck out towards him. Seeing the man's sword close in, Joker panicked. Shoving his axe in front of him, Link's attack was cut short by the weapon. As the weapons vibrated from the collision, Joker temporarily lost grip on his axe. Shaking his hands, he dropped his blade for a second. Augh! My hands sting!

Dashing in the direction of the nearest tree, Joker scurried up for a slight break. Rubbing his wrists, he tried to recover from the shock of the impact. After taking some time to gain his composure, he once again leapt down and dashed at Link. Raising his arms, Joker forgot he had left his weapon behind. A drop of sweat dripped down his face in embaressment, as he ran back to where he left the axe.

Realizing he was making a mistake that could cost him dearly, Joker retrieved his Silver Axe and continued on in the fight. Waiting for his SP to refill, he tried to find something to use as a temporary distraction. Finding some pebbles nearby, he picked up a few and tossed them towards one of the trees. As the tiny rocks flew through the air, he tip-toed over to where Link was positioned. The clods of earth clunked against the bark of the flora, creating small noises as Joker swung his axe straight at the mid-section of Link.

Everyone has them. You know, those little habits that you always do that annoys everybody. Link had one of turning his entire body around instead of his head. It served him well today, because that was what saved him. As he had turned to face the sound he hadn't realized it was a trick, at least, not untill Jester's axe caught him in his side. The attack opened up a large gash in his side and knocked him back down. Instead of getting up however, he bounded away on all fours like a cat. His hands still stung from the revertabrating clash his first attack had made. But that was not his top concern, as he was bleeding profusely. When he figured he had gotten far enough away he stood erect and said, "Repth." The spell washed over him like a cool wave, and it soothed his hands and healed his wound. At this point survival instincts kicked in, and all reasoning left.

Although humans are endowed with amazing brain power, they still have the original programming nature gives every animal. When their existence was threatened, that programming overrides normal human reasoning. At that point a person's only concern is to continue living. So Link was now, intent on winning or escaping. He crouched low in the grass and began to move slowly back to where Jester was. He moved so quietly that he could have passed for the wind at a distance. When he felt that he was three feet from his opponent, he sprang up, sword clutched tightly over his head, and yelled out a blood curdling warcry. "Eeeyaaaaah!"

Jester - September 3, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
A long gash ran down the side of Link. The distraction from the pebbles turned out to be worth it, as it opened an oppurtunity for damage. Warm red blood splashed over Joker's axe, as it ripped into Link's side. Satisfied with the hit, Joker failed to notice his opposition scamper away. Gloating over his temporary victory, he had no time to block as Link appeared out of the grass intent on a kill. His sword came crashing down, just as Joker put his arm up for protection. The blade cut through his arm like a knife through hot butter, leaving a deep wound that almost severed his forearm. Wincing in pain, Joker let out a tiny gasp of pain and fear. If I lose an appendage, how am I to carry my weapon. Grabbing the weapon and yanking it from his muscles, Joker yanked out a Health Drink.

Popping of the cork, he poured it over the injured area. Heaving his own weapon up, Joker lost all traces of amusement and went on the warpath. He stumbled a step or two, his tricep still stiff from the cut. Hope I don't get lockjaw. His SP still not high enough for another spell, Joker once again went for an attack with his Silver Axe. Not caring if he was heard or not, Joker stampeded towards Link with fire burning in his eyes. His anger rose to a peakthat it had never reached before. Mostly he was angry with himself for being so stupid as to let himself be struck. Twirling his axe by its handle, he had the idea of using it as a boomerang.

Approaching Link, Joker was extremely cautious about getting near. He can smell the material in my clothing, and hear my every move. He may be the most difficult person I will ever face. Even if he is impaired. Lumbring his way towards his enemy, Joker was slightly surprised as his knee gave out. Falling to the ground, he glanced back at his leg. His eyes widened with fear at what he saw. Some sort of bug had attached itself to his armor, and pierced it. It was sucking his blood from his knee, growing ever larger. Sending an urgent message to Link, Joker yanked the gross insect out and crushed it.

Be on the watch. This field has some interesting properties. Just found an insect sucking at my leg. Grunting as he stood, Joker gave himself the quick once-over to find any more parasties. Luckily there were no more. Focusing back on Link, he carried out his plan with his axe. Spinning the heavy blade, he threw it, aiming for Link's torso. Hopefully this will work. As the weapon neared, he started stamping down the grass to avoid any more creepy bugs.

Link's attack was successful, which bought him a little respite. Soon however, he heard footsteps coming at him. From his heavy footfall he doesn't seem happy. He brought his sword to bear and prepared for another charge. He was therefore vexed when the steps stopped about thirty-five feet in front of him. What the…? His question wasn’t answered by the arrival of a flash mail, but after ten seconds had elapsed he heard a soft whoosh coming at him. In a split second he clapped his hands over the face of Jester’s axe.
“Nice try, but you should never let go of your weapon. He heaved a sigh of relief before dropping the axe. Something was on his left arm that made it twitch, thereby causing him to release the weapon. He pulled it off and examined it, it felt like a… no. No, they couldn’t be here, not in a restricted field. Since when has that stopped hackers? All of a sudden he became aware of a large buzzing noise off to his right. It was a swarm of the scarab beetles, so that confirmed his fear. “Hackers! Watch out!” he managed to yell over the din. He hooked his foot under the fallen axe, and with one kick tossed it back to Jester. Then the swarm was all around him, and that droning sound filled his ears.

In a futile attempt, Link started slashing his sword at the mass of insects. But wherever his blade went, the beetles parted to let it pass unhindered. He didn’t know however, so he kept swinging believing he was doing something. The bugs kept two feet from him and wherever his sword went. Then the buzzing died down as the scarabs parted to allow a new player through.

She was a blademistress. Her head was that of a lioness, yet it showed every human emotion. She wore two strips of linen over her chest and a linen skirt down to her ankles. She walked with the dignified grace of a royal, but with the practiced pace of a fighter. Where she walked the scarabs parted, and she walked right up to Link.
“Well, if it isn’t Isis’ toy soldier,” she said in a sultry tone while running a finger across his cheek. “She had always said you were good looking. I had to see for myself.”
“What do you want?” Link growled, recoiling from her touch.
“I just wanted to see you in action. You’re making quite a name for yourself.”
“People take notice when someone makes it their goal to stop a group of no good misfits.”
“Before the twenty-first century they had a name for that type of person. It was ‘vigilante.’ And people don’t take too well to them as they used to.”
“I don’t believe people should be destroying what it took decades to repair. Do you seriously want another Pluto’s Kiss?”
“Three years ago…” she started, then stopped.
“What about three years ago?”
“Oh that’s right, you just started a year ago. You’re too young to remember.”
“Remember what?” Link questioned. He was getting aggravated by her tone, and from the cryptic way she talked.
“Three years ago, there was an incident called the twilight event…”
“And Pluto’s Kiss was involved?” Link interrupted.
“Heh heh, it became a result of it. But I’ve stayed too long, I must be going.” She brough her face close to his, then lightly kissed him on the lips. She nipped at his lip as she pulled away, then stepped back and gated out. Link made a stab at her, but wasn’t fast enough. He growled in frustration as the beetles around his disappeared. He had let an Egyptian Twilight member slip right through his fingers, even antagonize him! But then he notice his vision had turned pure white, and he even could make a fuzzy image of the gauze over his eyes. Maybe that wasn’t a complete bust after all.

Jester - September 17, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
Joker's heart fell as his opposition caught the flying blade. I was sure that would work. Is there no way to hit him?! Link was an honorable man, tossing Joker his axe back. While pondering why, he noticed a large buzzing erupt from the field. Looking to the sky for answers, a strike of terror running down his spine. A swarm of what appeared to be beetles, but not quite. Joker had seen them somewhere before, but where? Oh, yeah. They were in that Egyptian documentary. As the mass closed in, they seemed intent on harming Link and only Link. Seeing as how he owed him a favor, Joker heaved his weapon up and prepared for some pest control.

Dashing to the group in an attempt to save Link from the scarabs, Joker sent himself into the fray. Lifting his weapon, he was surprised and a little frightened as he froze in midair. A woman, apparently a hacker from her character appearance, emerged from the fray. As she spoke, her voice boomed through the area. Link's response performed the same action. Unable to cover his ears, Joker was forced into listening to the deafening conversation. Have they met before? As the two recalled run-ins from the past, Joker tried to break free of then game glitch that had him frozen. Pushing and straining, beads of sweat rolled down Daniels face. Am I stuck like this forever?

As the conversation came to a close, the hacker gave Link a small kiss on the lips. She disappeared into the cloud of insects, and they pulled away as well. Joker could feel time returning to normal. His character beghan to move forward ever so slightly. As he regained focus, Joker realized who the new target of his attack was. What was meant for the bugs was now aimed straight at Link, and closing in fast.

Link saw the shadow of his opponent flying through the air, but took a little too long trying to see it. He dodged, but the axe blade bit deep into his leg. The force of the blow sent him into a second spin, and he landed heavily on his back. He was dimly aware of the pain, and as he ran his hand along his leg he felt warm blood. He knew his HP was draining, but he wasn't quite out of the running yet.

He gritted his teeth as he raised his torso up and yelled out, "Juk Rom!" with his sword pointed at the shadow of his opponent. It was a gambit, he knew he was not going to last five minutes with Joker's relenless attitude. That guy really could wear on someone's nerves, but he was alright. It was over though, and Link knew it. Link's breathing was deep, but steady as he lay himself back down to conserve energy. He'd need it, if this last bid didn't work.

The accidental attack actually made contact, which had taken Joker by surprise. Not only had the chop in flicted major damage, but it seemed to cripple Link. He lay on the ground, unmoving after fliping through the air. Did I get him? Is it over? Feeling a slight bit arrogant, Joker began to appeal to an imaginary crowd. Bow left, bow right, bow center. A noise was heard escaping from Link's lips, and it took Joker a split secoind to long to interpret it. Turning back to his foe, he found a whirling column of branches dead ahead of him. Unable to escape the attack, Joker dropped to the feeble position and hoped for the best.

The torrent of wood cut his flesh like a hot knife through butter. His cape was torn into rags, his clothing shred into strips. As the searing pain of sharp points ran through his body, the least Joker could do was protect his head. One stab to the head and I am a goner. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of torture, the tornado came to and end. Joker stood on his weakened legs, barely able to stay standing. Grimacing as he looked at his tormented body, Joker felt a pulse of rage run through him. How dare he. Glaring in the ditrection of his fallen foe, the anger was quickly replaced with pity.

Link lay dying on the ground, every breath might be his last. Walking over to the great competitor, Joker felt tugs at his heart stings. Sorry to have to do this to you. Raising his hands, he once again signed out the words for a spell. The second spell in his arsenal was probably the deadliest. GanZot. A slight rumbling shook the ground, as the dagger-like rocks approached. Unable to stand the gory site that might come next, Joker turned away and prepared for the worst. A quick thought ran through his head, and he sent Link one final message. Good game.

Link felt, rather than knew, his last spell had done something. He did know, however, that Joker would not let that go without retaliation. He waited, then felt a rumble shake the ground under him. Link realized it was a Gan Zot spell, and tensed up for the inevitable. Finally a column of rock erupted into his back and threw him thirty feet into the air. Even before he hit the ground he knew something was broken from the way he flopped at an odd angle. The impact with the ground knocked what breath he had left out of him.

Where did I mess up? I didn't, I did my best. He just had a better stratagy. And his sight. Damn. He'd make a good ally, just as soon as I can see him As he closed his eyes for the last time, the darkness encompassed him and he felt at ease. The Game Over screen appeared, but Geo just took off his VR helmet and laid back in his executive chair. That was the last time he'd fight without vision, although Geoknew limited sight was more dangerous than no sight. He had a lot to think about, especially that hacker that had the nerve to interrupt his fight.

(OOC Good fight)

Joker watched with slight amusmant as his opoonent made funny shapes in the air, but quickly ended that. C'mon, grow up. His oppnent hit the ground with a sickening thud, his body distorted. A twinge of guilt shot through Joker's consciousness, but he shook it off. He is the one who signed up for this. Running the fight in its entirety through his mind, Joker recounted many experiences where he cold have been done for. Let's see. If he had sight, he probably could have aimed his spells better. Or known where he was slashing. Also, he could have probably dodged my atacks too. Looks like I won this fight on luck alone. Looking ack to his battered opponent, Joker found it diminishing inoto golden dust as the monsters do.

Warping out to Mac Anu, Joker was dismayed by the fact that he won on account of Link's blindness. Taking a stroll around the town, Joker remembered something he had to do. It was all that hackers fault it ended so soon. Rushing to the Board, Joker posted up a message, with the intent of eradicating anyone who interfered again. HELP WANTED. IF ANYONE KNOWS HE WHERE ABOUTS OF A HACKER WITH THE HEAD OF A LIONESS, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. Logging out of "The World", Daniel went downstairs in search of something to feed his craving stomach.
