Title: Mother Dearest Author: Caramina von Strade Rating: PG-13 for violence Genre: SF They were in the cryofreeze chamber, metal coffins surrounding them on all sides. Only one was full, according to the indicator light on the panel. Sojourner stared at it, feeling herself divorce from the world. It was Serindian who dared to step closer to it. She tapped a few keys, and the freeze box gave a beep. The pressure equalized with a hiss and steam rose from the broken seals. With a strength not contained in her body, Serindian heaved the cover from the coffin. She did not look at the contents. Sojourner herself was glad she could not see them. Serindian set the cover on the floor with meticulous care, not wanting to make any noise. She stood slowly and got he first glimpse of what was in the box: a body. Though she could not see it, Sojourner knew it. She stepped forward—one step, two, three, until she stood by the coffin. Then she looked—really looked at what was inside. A body. She hissed and shrank where she stood, but wouldn’t move away. A body. A broken bruised, beaten, bleeding body. Eyes blackened, nose pulp, jaw busted, lips cut; twisted, harmed, bent, broken, violated. Tears overflowed. “Oh, stars,” she breathed. “Oh, Mama.”She reached into the open panel, ripping and joining wires in a vain attempt to make the doors open. “Roses are red,” Guene thought, touching the red wire. “Violets are blue,” she touched the blue wire. “Honey is sweet,” she touched to yellow wire. “And so are you.” She grabbed the last wire and yanked with all her small might. The wire held and then snapped from its solder. Quickly she touched it to the other wire she held in her hand. With a hiss and a clank the cell door popped open. Dropping the wires, she ran out—smack into leather covered knees. In a split second she looked up and recognized the familiar faces: Sojourner, her hand over the external keypad and Serindian, whose knees she had banged into. “Serindian!” she cried as she was snatched up. “Mama—Mama—they got Mama—they were hurting Mama—.” She burst into tears. “Shh, shh.” Serindian held her, pushed her head against her shoulder. “Shh, lovie, shh.” “No! They got Mama! I have to help Mama!” Tears streaked down her face, her voice was hysterical. “Shhhhhh. Listen, love, we have to go, ok?” “No, no…” Sojourner bit her lip and clenched her fists, keeping careful watch on the hallway behind them. “Honey,” Serindian said, “Honey, we can’t help her—we need to leave, or they’re going to get you too. You have to be quiet, ok? We have to be real quiet or they’re going to find us. Can you do that?” “I’ve gotta find Mama—what do you mean we can’t help her?” “Sojourner spoke with gravel in her voice. “We can’t help her because she’s—” “—delayed.” Serindian said. “We saw her—and she told us to give you this.” She removed her arm from Guene and delved into a pocket. She pulled out a flash of metal—a copper locket. “That’s…that’s Mama’s locket. Mama would die before taking it off…” Devastation overcame her. “No…no…” “I’m sorry love. She told us to take you out of here and give this to you. We made a promise. So can you be quiet for just a little while?” Guene nodded dumbly. They ran from the cell.
