Yu-Gi-Oh! Goes Online
PRESS RELEASE --
KONAMI CORPORATION announced today that it will launch an online version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game, Konami's global strategic product. Konami's subsidiaries, Konami Online, Inc. and Konami Computer Entertainment Japan, Inc., have joined forces to develop the new on-line service, which is scheduled to start in a beta test phase on December 18. Full-scale service will be launched in Japan, U.S. and Europe in Spring 2005. Konami Group's companies will collaborate on network infrastructure, services and operations as well as content development to further enhance the internationally popular Yu-Gi-Oh!.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game, two players face off in an all-out battle, armed with a deck of cards consisting of Monster Cards, Spell Cards and Trap Cards. A player wins when he or she reduces his or her opponent's Life Points to zero. Yu-Gi-Oh! ONLINE will authentically recreate the Yu-Gi-Oh! duel field on the Internet. It will offer not only online matches beyond international borders, but online chatting and trading.
In Japan, Konami will distribute the Yu-Gi-Oh! ONLINE CD-ROM bundled with the December 18th issue of the Shueisha magazine, "V Jump." The CD-ROM lets users install the Yu-Gi-Oh! ONLINE application on their PCs and access the official site for registration to get an ID and password. The service will be provided free of charge during the beta test through Spring 2005. The CD-ROM will be distributed similarly in the U.S. through "SHONEN JUMP," German magazine, "BANZAI" (both to be released in January 2005), and Swedish "Shonen Jump" (to be released in February 2005) for release in the Japanese, U.S. and European markets.
Yu-Gi-Oh! is based on the comic series by Kazuki Takahashi, which was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1996. The series quickly achieved sales of 23 million copies and over 33 million copies including related books. Konami has sold video games and Official Card Games based on the comic series Yu-Gi-Oh!, also authored by Kazuki Takahashi, since 1998. It made its way into the U.S. and European markets in 2002. The deep strategy along with the game's content, which overcomes language barriers, has gained the support of children worldwide. Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of the strongest brands in children's entertainment.

If you take a look at M:TG Online then, sadly to burst your bubbles, it's not going to happen. There are enough people out there who would pay for the online virtual CCG to keep it running.
I personally never got into stuff like this because it's one thing to have free virtual colorforms to play with(aka Orbit), but it's an entirely different thing to pay money for virtual cards. For example, say a random error wiped your orbit and M: TGO accounts. The Orbit account is nothing, you start over and it's free. The M:TGO account on the other hand...you just lost MONEY.
As for the entire Yugioh thing...I just play the GBA games with my nieces and nephew. ;)
xaviersxmen - January 3, 2005 02:20 AM (GMT)
But to play it online without keeping score like in real life and play real people would be cool.:)

^ so... if I read it, regularly, am I a fanboy, too? ;)
I just don't agree with the idea of paying for online gaming, for reasons similar to what Enigma mentioned, so I probably won't be doing this. I wish companies could be more creative in their online ventures.

Disclaimer: I am simply providing the readers of this thread with information. This is no way, shape, or form to be taken as me volunteering to provide tech support for the program I am about to share with you. Truth be told I haven't even messed with this thing in 3 years. ;)
If you want to play, not pay, and you like playing the game much more than some eyecandy....well, I do happen to have a solution for you.
Several years ago a program called Apprentice was created by fans of M:TG. It was a way for people to play online matches and it allowed you to use every card imaginable. The program is simple, ugly, but very well designed if you simply want to play CCGs with people over the internet.
As new games were released, so were patches to modify Apprentice to be able to play those games as well. Since this topic is about Yu-Gi-Oh then I will simply focus on that. Now you've listened to me enough...here's the goodies.
Apprentice Download and links to various CCG patches.
Basic Walkthrough on using the program.
Now once you get to this point you have multiple options. You can play people on this forum. You can find forums specifically dedicated to playing your game of choice via Apprentice(not going to list them because that would be a rules violation, but they're simple enough to find anyways). You could go to one of the various chat channels dedicated to this topic and get matches from there.
So there you have it. You have access to all the cards. You don't have to pay a monthly service. You can play people on the internet. You only suffer in the fact that it's not terribly pretty. ;)

X, I believe those are the expansions(someone back me up on this?). So to use those expansions you would need those files.
xaviersxmen - January 4, 2005 12:23 PM (GMT)
Is anyone else getting this?
Enigma Zero - January 4, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
Suggestion: Hey X, once you get all of this figured out you should get a bunch of members together and start some kind of TCG Apprentice League here. Casual play, tournies for fun, whatever. It could be fun. :D
xaviersxmen - January 4, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
I want to make sure people will be getting it before I get it.
ShadowTheUnknown - January 4, 2005 11:25 PM (GMT)
Crumb - January 4, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
so do you need to buy anything to play this?
Pilaf - January 4, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
Shonen jump, or nothing... your choice.
inuyasha saotome - January 8, 2005 10:09 PM (GMT)
Sorry I was gone for a while. But its started now so you have to go on the web and get a name and passs word its going to free until a few moths later then you have to be a suscriber to play this is just the test run. And you have to buy the feb issue for the shonen jump or you dont get the yugioh cd if miss it then its over becasue the cd says you cant sell it again or ppl would probably sell it on ebay so last chance before the issue goes off sale. Plus it takes a whole bunch of mb on your comp so forgot about it unless you have a fast comp and it probably doesnt work for mac cuz it doesnt say so below
