Title: The Anime Breakdown
Description: Welcome To The Lab

Enigma Zero - July 31, 2004 08:32 AM (GMT)
Ladies and Gentelemen!
Boys and Girls!
Children of All Ages!
Welcome to The Anime Breakdown...

The Anime breakdown is to be an ongoing thread here targetting those who are curious about anime, but really haven't seen that much. I will be entertaining the opinions of others who have vast knowledge in this area to help make suggestions to the people who choose to participate in this thread. My only requests are that if conversations on a particular show get too lengthy that you create other threads in this section to discuss them and that there be no spoilers. My main focus here is to analize and suggest.

For you, yes you, the anime curious types....this is a grand opertunity to get sort of a 'Guided Tour' through anime. By telling us various things we can breakdown and figure out what you find interesting in a show and make suggestions based on that information to allow you a more focused approach to the wonder genre that is anime.

The process is actually quite simple. Here's what I need from you:

____________________________________________________________________
Basic Information:
Username:
Age(choose 1): []Below 13 []Below 17 []Below 18 []18+ (Completely Unrestricted)
Types of Movies you like(genres with minor examples):

Anime History(1 entry per show):
Name of Series Seen:
Completed(Y -or- N):
Rating(1-10):
What you liked about it(3 things):
What you didn't like about it(3 things):
____________________________________________________________________

Ok, here's a more precise breakdown of the above items to you can see where I am going with this and prove the best information possible for breakdown.

Username: It simply makes this easier on me since I am probably going to paste this information around here and there during the process.

Age: This one is VERY Important. The last thing I wish to do is suggest things that are too mature for a younger member or things that are too childish for an older member. The former, of course, being the major concern.

Types of Movies you like: This just gives me a decent idea of what you, as a viewer, are entertained by when watching movies. This also gives me some insight into possible genres to suggest.

Anime History: Through this section we will list the shows you have seen and how you reacted to them. Feel free to list anything related to anime that you have seen. This is not a thread to make fun of people because they like DBZ or Beyblade(I can do that anywhere ;) ). It is a thread to actually get something positive accomplished.

Name of Series Seen: For every anime series you have seen I want a seperate copy of this...as well as the remainer of this section actually. By determining likes and dislikes it's much easier to predict trends and make suggestions. If you have never seen an anime series in your life, go back to the Movies part and double what you previously typed. :D

Completed(Y -or- N): Fairly straightforward and, again, required for each Series Entry. Just curious if you finished it. For the ridiculously long series (season upon season upon season....) you may simply list something like Y-1, Y-2, Y-3, and N-Rest. So long as we all understand one another...it's all golden.

Rating: Again, simple and required for each Series Entry. Rate the series on a 1-10 scale. For the ridiculously long series feel free to list something like 1(7), 2(8), 3(5), and so on until you run out of seasons viewed.

What you liked about it(3 things): Once Again, yup, you guessed it, one for each Series Entry. Simply pick 3 things you liked about it. I'm not asking for series spoilers here. Be general in your listings. Did you like the soundtrack? Did you like the character development? Did you like the story? Hero? Villian? Comic Relief?

What you didn't like about it(3 things): Last time, say it with me, one for each Series Entry. Now that you've previously listed what you liked about the series...what didn't you like? What completely got on your nerves or just made you tear out your own hair? Again, I am not asking for series spoilers here. Be gerneral in your listings....same as above.

Here's a Completely Random Example:

Initial Analysis:
Subject: Hojo
Recommendations: 4

Recommendation 1: Yu Yu Hakusho: Spirit Detective(1992)
user posted image
Story: The story revolves around a juvenile delinquent, Yuusuke Urameshi, who, in the first minutes of the anime, DIES saving a child from a traffic accident. Wandering around as a spirit, confused as heck, he meets Botan, a ferry-girl who guides spirits to the Reikai (spirit realm) after death. She informs him that his death was totally unpredicted and unexpected, a mistake, so is given a second chance at life by Enma Daiou (Lord of the Dead), by undergoing a series of challenges and tasks, thus becoming a Reikai Tantei (Spirit Detective).
Reasoning: This is one of CN's better choices and it actually is a decent example of taking the DBZ formula and making it into something better. The Characters are both entertaining and funny at times.

Recommendation 2: Ranma ˝(1989)
user posted image
[B][U]Story:
Ranma Saotome is a teen-aged martial artist who turns into a girl when splashed with cold water. His father Genma has engaged him to a girl named Akane Tendo. If you add to this an uninhibited amazon girl after Ranma, an okonomiyaki cook girl after Ranma, a boy after Ranma's female form, a boy out to kill Ranma, a girl who'd sell freezers to eskimo's and several other psychopaths living in Nerima, you've got Ranma ˝.
Reasoning: Ranma is a classic when it comes to anime series. Most of my friends who like DBZ instantly fell in love with this one. Once you've seen Ranma ˝ you will never forget having watched it. That much is for certain.

Recommendation 3: Trigun(aka Trigun: Planet Gunsmoke)(1998):
user posted image
Story: Trigun takes place in the distant future on a deserted planet. Vash the Stampede is a gunfighter with a legend so ruthless that he has a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. Entire towns evacuate at the rumor of his arrival. However, the real Vash the Stampede is not the same man that rumor portrays him to be. The enigmatic and conflicted lead character in Trigun is actually more heroic in nature; as well as a complete and utter idiot at times.
Reasoning: CN was airing this one(uncertain if they still are honestly). This is a 26 episode rollercoaster with humor, action, great villians, an amazing storyline, and a ridiculously high bullet count.

Recommendation 4: NOIR(2001)
user posted image
Story: NOIR is a tale of assassins, in particular one named Mireiyu Buke, a contract killer who receives a message from a young girl with no memory about herself, but is an incredibly efficient killing machine. The story takes us on a pilgrimage to the pasts of both girls, which leads them to Paris, France, and someone is trying to stop them...
Reasoning: Take the Atmosphere and Soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop(Minus the blues aspect), add in spectacular action sequences, and top off with a storyline that will keep you guessing until the very end. NOIR is one of the most engrossing series I have seen. You will be pulled into the storyline from the 1st episode.

[End Breakdown Sequence]

Well, there are 4 recommendation that should help you get more out of your anime viewing experience. 2 of them(Yu Yu Hakusho and Trigun shouldn't be too hard to track down. Ranma ˝ can usually be found in most video stores to rent. NOIR is immensely entertaining, but probably the hardest to find. You might get lucky with a video store. You can also get them all off of Netflix. This brings the 1st instalment of "The Anime Breakdown" to a close. I Hope this helped out.

Hojo - August 1, 2004 02:30 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Enigma. You were correct with those, too, I've seen Trigun and I liked it alot, and my friend told me about Ranma and it seems like something I would like. From what Shadow from the Unknown has told me about YYH it sounds really cool. Never heard of NOIR, though. Spot-On, Zero, you've done well.

Recommendation 1: Hikaru no Go(2001)
user posted image
Story: Hikaru Shindo is just a normal 12-year old Japanese boy. One day, as he's going through his grandfather's old things to see what he can sell, he comes across an old Go board. A ghost type figure comes out of the board and tells Hikaru his sad story. His name is Sai Fujiwara, a man who was the Go Instructor, a thousand years ago to the emperor of Japan. However, Sai was accused of cheating, and was exiled from the city. With no reason to live, Sai committed suicide by drowning himself. Now, he haunts a Go board, and wants to achieve the perfect Go game, called the "Hand of God". He hopes to do this through Hikaru. Thus the story begins…
Reasoning: Your love for strategy is apparent in both your threads and your Gtoon playing ability. You have listed a like for Yu-Gi-Oh and comedy as well. Go is easily one of the most strategic games ever invented. Having played both it and chess I would have to say that it requires more strategy to play Go than chess. Just as Yu-Gi-Oh teaches you how to play the card game as the story progresses, Hikari no Go teaches you how to play Go as it's story progresses.

Additional Information:

Go:
Go originated in China more than 4000 years ago. but it was the Japanese who perfected it and made Go a great strategic skill game. For thousands of years everyone from the working class to royalty played Go, making it the national pastime. The popularity of Go has now reached the West bringing in an air of Oriental wisdom and mystery.

The object of Go is to gain control of territories and capture enemy stones. Go is easy to learn but gives all types of players many challenging hours of fun. Go is for two players.

This show may take some effort to track down. I know it exists on DVD, but unless you have some amaxing video store near you, but it's well worth the effort if you can find it. ;)

Recommendation 1: Tenchi Muyo(1992):
user posted image

Story:
Tenchi Masaki is a normal high school student in Japan, who spends the summers doing chores around his grandfather's family shrine. One day, Tenchi manages to steal the key to a mysterious cave where an oni (Japanese demon) is said to have been sealed away by his ancester Yoshou, whose sword still stands guard over it. When he enters this cave, he finds that, much to his surprise, the legend is indeed true when the oni's dessicated skeletal form ("mira"--Japanese mummy) comes to life and attacks him. Tenchi flees the cave in a panic, and later returns to high school, taking the hilt--seemingly all that remains of the ancestral sword--with him. At school, Tenchi is again attacked by the oni, whose name is Ryouko, who has now completely revived herself. Tenchi manages to defeat her with the sword's help, but this is only the beginning of a hilarious Japanese romantic comedy as the cast grows and gets more complex it comes to the point where poor Tenchi is basically the only male in a house full of women from all over the universe.
Reasoning: It's not as romantic as Love Hina, but it is similiar and just as funny, if not funnier in some places. It adds somewhat tot he more reality based forumla that was Love Hina while, at the same time though complete and utter catastrophes, expanding into something compoletely different.

Recommendation 2: Vandread 1st Stage(2000) and Second Stage(2001):
user posted image

Story:In a distant future where men and women live on separate planets, a lowly mechanic named Hibiki has his eyes on piloting a Vanguard, a mecha fighting machine built by the male military. He sneaks his way onto a military space ship at a time when female pirates attack with their ships called Dreads. In the middle of the battle, the male ship and female ship accidentally collide and merge into a new ship, later called the Nirvana, leaving Hibiki and two other men stranded with a crew full of women far off in the depths of space. Now, men and women must learn to live with one another just to survive against a new threat to all of humankind. Filled with great action, blossoming love, and 3D animation, Vandread (whose name comes from when a Vanguard combines with a Dread) comes from Gonzo Studios (Blue Submarine No. 6, Gatekeepers).
Reasoning: Vandread does an amazing job of showing how men and women would react to one another if they had never met one another before. There are some utterly hilarious scenes where one discovers the most basic thing about the other. Not to mention this series has some AMAZING CGI and battle sequences.

[End Breakdown Sequence]

Tenchi Muyo used to be on CN, but it's gone now. The show was quite popular so finding it in a video store should not prove too difficult. Vandread, on the other hand is amazing and out on DVD, but you will have a harder time locating it. It's worth the effort though. ;)

Recommendation 1: Orphen(1998)
user posted image
Story: Based on a series of fantasy novels by Yoshinobu Akita, Majutsushi Orphen (literally Sorcerer Stabber Orphen, 1998) is a rambling but entertaining saga of a pure heart triumphing over seemingly insurmountable challenges. Orphen is the adopted name of Krylancelo, a promising young sorcerer. Azalie, an older girl who was like a sister to him during their training, tried to use magic that was too powerful for her--and was transformed into the dragon Bloody August. When their wise instructor, Childman seemed bent on destroying the dragon, Orphen left his tutelage in the Tower of Fangs, vowing to save Azalie himself. Six years later, he's still on that quest, joined by his apprentice Majic and feisty blonde Cleao, plus the comic brothers Volcan and Dortin. As they wander through cities and enchanted ruins, Orphen's story is recounted in flashbacks. The world they wander througn is a decidedly odd one that mixes elements of feudal kingdoms, the American West, and Europe during the Industrial Revolution.
Reasoning: Let's See...Magic Knight Rayearth , Revolutionary Girl: Utena, AND Fushigi Yugi. Yeah, this one fits into the equation well. ;)

Recommendation 2: Princess Mononoke (aka Mononoke-Hime)(1997)
user posted image
Story: The time and place is the Muromachi era, Japan. A prince of a small village is cursed to a slow but certain death by a Boar God turned Tatari-Gami (Cursing God). To find a possible cure to the curse, he travels westwards. Hearing of a Shishi-Gami (Deer-God) that may be his salvation, he soon comes across a village of iron miners and there finds himself in the middle of a battle between the animal gods of the forest, lead by a girl called Princess Mononoke by the villagers who was raised by the Wolf God, and the iron miners, lead by a female leader who is trying to create a sanctuary for human outcasts. Along side this battle is a mysterious group of men who are after the head of the Shishi-Gami in a quest to gain immortality. Why did the Boar God turn into a Cursing God? Can he persuade all those involved to make peace or is conflict inevitable between man and nature?
Reasoning: Based on your listings I believe it's about time you got into MIyazaki's Films. They're all amazing and this one shoul dbe fairly easy to find and rent due to the amazing US treatment it got.

Recommendation 3: Atroboy(1963)
user posted image
Story: The story line follows the adventures of a robot created in the likeness of a scientist's dead son. The scientist goes mad and sells the boy robot to a circus. In the climax of the first episode, the robots, though horribly mistreated by the circus owner, rescue circus patrons from certain death when a massive fire destroys the main tent. In reward for their heroism, the robots are granted their freedom. The remaining episodes deal with a wide range of issues, from the longing of robots for human emotions and families, to the destruction of the environment. Pretty hefty stuff compared to the funny animal hi-jinx of Saturday morning!
Reasoning: Astroyboy is the grandfather of all anime. Your listing mentioned Metropolis....well, see how it all began. This is the 1st work from Dr. Osamu Tezuka.

Recommendation 4: Ceres, Celestial Legend
user posted image
Story:An ancient legend, a love that transcends time, and vengeance so bittersweet. An ancient legend has devastating and unfathomable consequences on 16-year old Aya Mikago. Her world turned upside down, when on her 16th birthday she learns her family intends to kill her. Learning that her family always kills the girls on their 16th birthday to keep the power in the hands of the men, Aya sets out on a journey to discover the truth about herself and the disturbing history of her family line.
Reasoning: This one is right up the alley of someone who watched Revolutionary Girl: Utena and loved Fushigi Yugi.

Recommendation 5 and 6:Vandread: 1st Stage and 2nd Stage and Tenchi Muyo
Story: See Above(Dr. Havok Falcon1 Breakdown).
Reasoning: Vandread is comical and fits in well wish your listings, as is Tenchi Muyo.

Pilaf here presented an interesting challenge. Having seen a wide variety of different series I found myself on multiple occasions saying,"Hey I know, what about....oh wait...it's in the list too." Some of these will be rather easy to locate and some of them could prove to be a royal pain, but if you've seen all of that I doubt you'll have trouble finding these. ;)

Basing off of one title is pretty easy work. The good news is that you appear to have CN, which can offer you more titles to view for free. The bad news...ok, there isn't any...I'm just pulling your leg. You're at the beginnings of something I believe you will find entertaining. I think you will enjoy my recommendations and also you have the chance to watch CN and various other easily accessable networks to enjoy the things that most people are watching now. Good Hunting....and Good Luck. Welcome to Anime. :D

Pilaf - August 3, 2004 07:03 PM (GMT)
thanks, but I've seen princess mononoke, and astroboy(who hasn't?) and though you didn't reccomend it, spiried away. I just forgot to list them... and I think I gave utena a 3, cause it's wierd in a BAD wierd sense. But thanks, I'll try to find orphen (or i could just play the video game :)), and ceres which looks very interesting. As does vandread. But like I said, I meant everything on CN, considering I've been watching toonami since since thundercats and voltron were on it. that includes tenchi muyo, tenchi unverse, and tenchi in tokyo (and no need for tenchi, but thats not anime, but manga.) and If you haven't noticed, thats genma in my sig  .

Yes, it was an oversight and I appologize for it. Also, due to the nature of the shows listed, this one was not the easiest one to breakdown. Ok, enough excuses...it's time to go to work...

.....[Begin Breakdown Sequence]

Initial Analysis:
Subject: Voltei
Recommendations: 3

Recommendation 1: Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure(1999):
user posted image
Story: Kazuki Yotsuga is just an ordinary Japanese schoolboy and computer geek, but when he starts seeing visions of battling giant robots, his life starts to change forever. His participation in his girlfriend's, Mitsuki Sandada, scientist father, Ken Sanada, throws him into a parallel Earth that is threatened by the organization, Raragun, who is gunning for world domination. Kazuki finds that he has no family in this world but it does have a version of the Sanada's as members of an elite defense force dedicated to stopping Raragun. Now Kazuki must join the fight as the only male of an all female pilot force who can pilot the giant robots wielded in this war even as he must adjust in this strange world.
Reasoning: Considering Voltei's leanings towards the more Parody/Satire orientated titles. I chose to make suggestions that followed this trend. Dual! is a very good series and it likes to poke fun at mecha anime to boot.

Recommendation 2: Slayers(1995):
user posted image
Story: In a medieval sword and sorcery world, there is one mage who is notorious for her power and grace (at least that's how she likes to put it), Lina Inverse. In reality, she is a teenage mage with a penchant for collateral damage, obnoxiousness and gluttony. This series chronicles her adventures with companions, such as the powerful but dumb swordsman Gourry Gabriev as she quests for gold and finds a heck of a lot trouble along the way.
Reasoning: Again, it's a parody/satire, but this one has more of a fantasy feel to it and it's, IMHO, probably one of the funniest anime of it's type.

Recommendation 3: Lost Universe(1997):
user posted image
Story: Kain Blueriver, the hero of this sci-fi comedy, is a Trouble Contractor: he handles cases too difficult and/or dangerous for the Universal Guardians. He always wears a blue cape - even with Gundam-type robot armor - and fights with a psi blade, a weapon similar to the light-sabres in "Star Wars," powered by psychic energy. His partner in adventure is the energetic, green-haired Canal, the holographic embodiment of the control system of his ship, the Swordbreaker. In their first adventures, Kain and Canal acquire a third companion: Millie, a Jill-of-all-trades, mistress of none, who is determined to be the best in the universe... at something. Although she's a crack shot, Millie is a typical, fussy anime heroine who complains and blames everyone and everything for her repeated failures. The Swordbreaker is a "Lost Ship," a relic of the superior technology of a vanished civilization that can defy the laws of physics, motion, inertia, etc. Kain inherited it from his grandmother, whose wisdom he constantly invokes. This quarrelsome trio retrieves stolen property, rescues runaway ships, and protects sensitive witnesses, squabbling and bickering all the way.
Reasoning: Yup, more Parody/Satire. This is more one looks to make fun of all of those Space Travel type shows, and it's very successful in doing so.

[End Breakdown Sequence]

Well, there you have it. Continuing on the path of Parody/Satire that Voltie has already began I have arrived at 3 recommendations. Slayers should be easy to find at most rental places, I know my local Blockbuster has it and they have a horrible anime selection. If not, you can always go with Netflix. Man, I love Netflix(shameless plug in hopes of one day getting a free account. ;) ) Until next time.

Initial Analysis:
Subject: Oplasma
Recommendations: 3

Recommendation 1: X(2001) (aka X TV):
user posted image
Story:Fate. Destiny. These words will rule the world of those who will decide the future of mankind and the Earth. The Dragons of Earth, or the Seven Angels, stand ready for a revolution that will purify the Earth of the plague that is mankind. The Dragons of Heaven, or the Seven Seals, also step up to defend mankind and prevent the destruction of humanity. And at the center of it all, stands Kamui Shirou. His decision to side with either group will decide the fate of the Earth. Kamui has finally returned to Tokyo to protect his friends, Fuma and Kotori Monou, from the dark times ahead. He will choose his allies and make friends along the way, each endowed with their own unique superhuman powers, to fulfill his destiny and resolve the question: Can the future be changed?
Reasoning: You like action. You like story. You like character development. You don't like goofy heros. This one delivers everything you like and nothing you don't. IMHO, It's a solid match.

Recommendation 2: Noir(see Hojo Breakdown)
Reasoning: I have a hard time thinking of an anime series that does a better job of both storytelling and character development. The atmosphere, style, soundtrack, and story blend together almost perfectly to pull the viewer deep into the story and it doesn't let go until it's finished.

Recommendation 3: Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex(2002)
user posted image
Story:In a future Japan, Major Motoko Kusanagi operates as a key agent of Section 9 of internal security under Chief Aramaki. Together with her support crew and a group of quadraped enforcement droids who operate with childlike enthusiasim, they confront the numerous threats facing Japan. However, their opponents are predominately capable of using the advanced technology around them to their considerable advantage and it will take all the talents of Section 9 to stop them.
Reasoning: It's a solid blend of sci-fi, action, and sometimes mystery. I believe you'll enjoy it. That and it's currently being shown on Adult Swim, although I have not had a chance to watch it yet to see how good/horrible the dub is that's been made for it or if they've butchered some of the content. Actually, I should check this one out myself just to see what, if anything, has been changed.

[End Breakdown Sequence]

Ok, so there's 3 solid recommendations. I believe you should enjoy them all. GITS:SAC is on Adult Swim so it's obviously the easiest for you to see now. X and Noir will be a tad more difficult, but you may luck into them at your local video store or you could try Netflix/Blockbuster Online(I actually have a BBO Account now :D ). Until Next time.

Setafox - December 2, 2004 02:23 AM (GMT)
 Enigma, you have some catching up to do. Better hurry

Enigma Zero - December 2, 2004 07:19 AM (GMT)
I do serious amounts of thought and research for every single one of these that I do. Tonight, I am just popping into the boards for a few minutes to catch up on a few things and then I am doing stuff with friends. Tomorrow night I will do another breakdown and I should be caught up, barring unforseen additions, by the end of the weekend. Not that there's any kind of timetable here. ;)
