Title: How many Earths do you need?
PotatoEatinKid - October 19, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
This isn't really a game, but I thought it would be neat to see how the average TCGer lives.
http://www.earthday.net/footprint/index.aspTake the short survey and post your results.
If everyone lived like me, we would need 2.6 planets.
Wys - October 19, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
In my environmental science class we did this. I think I needed about 3.5 earths.

Ok...so I have all the enviromental home things like special lightbulbs and junk. I almost never drive alone. I buy produce from local venders most of the time...and I still suck? What do you have to do to live on this Earth? Live in a solar powered 5x5 box and walk everywhere? :P

Won't matter, nuclear war will happen within 100 years anyway.

You'd be surprised how many little things have huge environmental impacts though. For example, if you sign up for the no junk mail list, think of how much paper you're saving, and how much energy you're saving that is wasted producing and printing the junk mail.
Enigma Zero - October 19, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
I...don't get junk mail. Not because I'm super ecofriendly...just because I don't like my mailbox to fill up with useless junk. =D

Well then your ecological footprint is probably a lot less than what it says. That test isn't really accurate in some cases, because it doesn't take into account certain environmental innovations that have come about recently. I actually don't buy a lot of food locally, but my footprint was less than yours. There must be an error. Either that or you have a humongous house, or drive like 300+ miles.

To help the environment out a lot, stop buying plastic water bottles. Buy a nalgene and drink from that.
About nuclear power, we should start building some more plants soon. There is no pollutants put in the atmosphere, its dirt cheap, and the air quality would be a lot better. France has the cleanist air for all indurialized nations cause it uses nuclear for most its energy.

The only problem with nuclear power plants is the radioactive waste that goes along with it. The waste needs to be stored until it is no longer radioactive which takes an extremely long time in most cases (half-lives are usually thousands of years). We may run out of places to store this waste in the future, and the storage facilities might decay and leak some of the waste if they aren't well-maintained.
It seems the most environmentally friendly energy sources are still solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy (i.e. biogas, methane from cows, ethanol), and geothermal energy.
But on the topic of things we can do to help reduce our impact, I've got an awesome book with a ton of suggestions. If anyone wants to know things they can do, PM me.

You actually can recycle nuclear waste to run reactors, it is more expensive to do.

That's a lot better than most people though. In my AP Environmental Science class (which you'd think would be full of people who care about the environment), I had the lowest score. In fact, other than me, I don't think anyone had less than 3.5 Earths, and my teacher needed 8.
Plus, like I said before, that test really doesn't take into account some important things, so your results might actually be a bit better or worse than the number they give you.
