Title: USER CREATED POLLS
Description: can they be brought back?
Big Uncle Gorilla - August 21, 2005 02:47 PM (GMT)
As many of you know, all users used to be able to create polls here in the voting section of the TCG forum. A few monthes ago this section was flooded with polls that were either bad, or redundant of other recent polls. As a result the mod team restricted the creation of polls to VIP memberes, and created a different polls section in 'fun and games' for everybody else to use.
The mod team has been discussing this matter recently and think it might be about time to re-open the polling booth to ALL members. I come here before you today to help you take back your polling forum! -(This is ironic because I was also the one who wanted to take it away from you initially. Giggle and call BUG a hypocrate now)-
----------
Quickly, please understand our logic for restricting the polling section and our logic for wanting t try and reopen it. It was closed because it was becoming a breeding ground for spam. it was full of junk. good polls were getting bumped back to page 2 the same day they were created. in short, it was a mess. We want to open it back up because the mods believe TCG members are all equal. By restricting the polls section, we made our VIPs and PMs far more elite than ever intended (for those of you who are not VIP the benefits are greatly exagerated, its a title of recognition more than anything).
----------
Basically, before we reopen the polls section, we just need to see some quality polls created and posted by our members. Now, how do you create a poll? The restriction has not been repealled yet, so the best way is to PM your idea to somebody who can post it on your behalf. I volunteer. Some other mods and PMs may also be willing to assist. We may help you revise the poll before actually posting it.
----------
What is a good poll? We do not have a definition, but here are some things I'd like you to consider.
Timing - Let's not bump other polls. If you created a poll already today, wait until tomorrow. If several others have created polls, try and let theirs fizzle out before you go bumping them. This is just common courtesy
Make it a poll - There are some instances where an open discussion may be appropriate for the polling booth. The recent 'name the most influential video game' is a good example. generally though, a poll should have choices, Example:
Good Poll: What grade are you in? 1) K-5, 2) 6-8, 3) 9-12, 4) College, 5) Done w/ school
Bad Poll: What grade are you in? [no choices]
The second poll isn't technically a poll, its a question. There is no summary of results, so following the poll will get confusing.
Finite vs. infinite (aka the 'other' rule) - Making a poll rather than a discussion is a great start, now consider your possible answers and the results you are going to get. Making an 'other' selection could be polling suicide. Examples:
Bad poll: Who is your favorite super hero? 1. Batman, 2. Spider-Man, 3) Other
ARGH!!!! Superman, the Flash, Wolverine, Hulk... other will run away with this poll. You asked a question with an infinite number of possible responses and a minimal number of choices.
Another bad poll: Who is your favorite Simpson character? Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, Other
Again, Sideshow Bob, Apu, Comic Book Guy, Flanders... other will steal these catagory and all your poll will prove it that the secondary characters make the Simpsons great!!! What if we tweak the question as such:
Good poll: Who is your favorite member of the Simpson family? Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, Other
Much better. by limiting it to the family, 'other' can only be a few possible characters most of whom we never see. You will get much fewer 'others' this way.
Pictures - Pictures make polls fun. Malach uses them, BUG uses them. Some words on pictures; 1. They are not required. 2. Keep them small when possible both in terms of file size and phyical dimensions. The are no set standards, just use your best judgement.
----------
Hope to hear from you poll-ers out there! Good luck and have fun!

I never even knew the Voting Booth was restricted. Silly Hojo...
I think you should reopen it on the condition that everyone follow the above posted rules/suggestions. It will be much easier to enforce these now with the PMs policing the forum. Still, you know, it's up to the Higher Powers.

that a good idea and you should delete the old polls

If anybody has poll ideas, share them with me. I just want to see that those of us anxious to make polls understand my guidelines above before we re-open the polling section. So far, nobody has taken me up on my offer.

Actually, you are spamming yourself telling me not to spam, in which I was only making a statment that did not need to be further established, as the word no pretty much sums it up. I was saying no deleting past polls, I find no problem with that. Every post doesn't need to be a paragraph.
On topic, deleting the old polls wouldn't be necessary, they should just stay up, but if a poll is created for that same topic and there is already one that was made, it should be deleted. This way there would be no repetitive polls being created.
Tikiman - October 15, 2005 03:01 AM (GMT)
Actually, I was commenting about why it was closed in the first place, being on topic. Inherent in my speculation is also my prediction of what would happen if it was opened again... spam. So no I wasn't spamming, and the word "No" had no relevance to the topic other than the quote, which it was not even made clear what it was referring to, and therefore is SPAM. Have a nice day. :)
TheUnknownSeries - October 15, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
Ok to pmake everything clear. In some case one word post is not spam but in this case it is a big if. I will let it go cause it was over a month ago so I just will tell you two good job in bring back this topic. A lot of member need to know why they cannot creat polls here. Oh and cut it out and stop trying to sound like neither of you spammer was spamming tiki and elm! :P j/k tiki and elm

its a good idea to restrict, it will go on forever if you dont.
Fujiwara - December 9, 2005 01:12 AM (GMT)
I can't believe it. You restricted members from making polls in the voting booth just because they were stupid, bad, or redundant? That's not a good reason. I thought it was because a member made a poll that was crapo related.

" How often do you take a shower"
" Whats your favorite number"
" Whats your favorite smilie"
" Whats your favorite bird"
" How many bathrooms do you have"
" Whats your favorite fruit"
" Do you like to sleep"
Oh my, I can go on and on with the stupidity

Then why can't the mods delete these posts. Or tell the members who created them to stop make stupid posts, instead of keeping them?
Naruko - December 9, 2005 10:06 PM (GMT)
I dont know, im not a mod :P
My guess, THER WERE SO MANY STUPID POLLS!!!! TO MANY TO DELETE!!!!! Thats how annoying it was :P
And besides, this is OLD news. I never heard you complain before so why complain now ^-^ Case Closed

Request for a poll
Because of the recent hacks and whatnot of peoples accounts, and scams and everything, i think it would be useful to have an inventory section again. Since orbit is more active than in past years, people can retrieve their lost goods. I was told that the section was deleted because no one used it, but i am 100% sure i saw people posting weekly if not daily in there.
