halo_freak - January 30, 2005 11:17 PM (GMT)
hey everyone,
over the past few days ive been seeing alot of bulletins saying there is something going on in the US to ban anime.
there is an online petition about this which people can sign.
ive read through alot of the comments peolpe have left on there and i think you should too before signing it...i dont know how anime can be banned from a country it seems kinda crazy to me.will it mean the closure of any anime websites? will it be illegal to own any anime?how can it be banned?will customs seize any imported anime?it doesnt make much sense to me.i know i live in the UK so it doesnt affect me but i love anime so it concerns me when it is being threatened.
anyway the website below is the petition so check it out.

Another problem that can be solved by killing Bush

Oplasma45 - January 30, 2005 11:33 PM (GMT)
It will not happen, it's an absurd idea to ban something. What next put an embargo on Japan, HA! Besides, who ever heard of banning a cartoon and it actually happend?

Z Fighter - January 31, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
yeah...once i heard rumors about banning all cartoons that have any sort of violence in it...Guess what happened...NOTHING..!!!

Yeah they ban Speedy Gonzalez cartoon because they feel that it was sterotyping Mexicans.

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 12:25 AM (GMT)
WHAT??? that is something I can't believe

TheUnknownSeries - January 31, 2005 12:26 AM (GMT)
Its true. You ever notice that you don't see anymore speedy gonzalas cartoons anymore.

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 12:28 AM (GMT)
you mean speedy gonzales?

ShadowTheUnknown - January 31, 2005 12:30 AM (GMT)
They can't take my anime! I actually dont have much but i have manga related to anime. If that ever did happen(which it wouldn't) would they take that too?And besides, that's what blocking tv channels is for. If parents don't want their kids watching anime, block the anime channel but leave it for the rest of us.

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 12:30 AM (GMT)
so they will close ADV and other stuff that sell anime?

TheUnknownSeries - January 31, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
Yes! I just edit the last two post I did! ;)

Yeah there was a group that feels that it stereotype Mexican. I can't find any article about it but there are a lot of forums that talk about it.

And about anime! There is a lot of good anime series that will not air in the US. Other will cut out scene but that kill the series. Just ask Toy about Knights of the Zodiac!

Coolsuffdude - January 31, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
Too much stuff released, probably gonna ban explict/triple x stuff.

ShadowTheUnknown - January 31, 2005 12:36 AM (GMT)
meh, if it did happen, I'd get a bunch of anime lovers and revolt against bush.

TheUnknownSeries - January 31, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
Triple X stuff have always been ban. They had other problems with anime!

I'll give you an example. Kenshin and Inuyasha had a lot of scenes that had a lot of blood and body parts getting cut off.

Yu Yu Hakusho had a lot of foul language, adult jokes, and blood.

Then there is anime that I feel will never show because they show images that look adult (But one or two thing are missing if you catch what I am saying ;) ), really funny adult joke, teenage girls acting like they are adults, and blood! An example of this is Neon Genesis Evangelion .

But there are US cartoon that gets away with stuff like this, like the venture brothers!

So the FCC is really full of it!

yeah, I guess they did it to SS because of the Bhuda's teachings and I just found out that Ulisses 31 didn't made it to US either that is also Mythilogy stuff.

TheUnknownSeries - January 31, 2005 02:11 AM (GMT)
I think out of all the anime they air on cartoon network Saint Seiya (aka Knights of the Zodiac) was the one that they really killed!

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 02:13 AM (GMT)
^ oh that was a stab right through my heart!!! <_<

Malach - January 31, 2005 02:15 AM (GMT)
I am sure the problem is the marketing of certain animes to kids, ie DBZ.

TheUnknownSeries - January 31, 2005 02:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah most kids want to see fighting or robots.

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)
but still they even cut the violent scenes of SS, ;) well I just hope this is not more than a gossep  Toyi crossing fingers. :P

Dr. H - January 31, 2005 11:46 PM (GMT)
LIES! If they took anime away Bush would be shot out of th White House and then it would be turned into the Blood House.

TOYI1SOCCER - January 31, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
OMG  that was hilarious

ShadowTheUnknown - February 1, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I might actually do that. Anime is a way to escape to an alternate reality where it's like you actually are fighting with Kenshin or Inuyasha. Not like when they talk to the TV or something messed up like that. But it really makes you feel like your right there.

TOYI1SOCCER - February 1, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Agree wth that, I feel that anime clicks on my head is just so special and yes , like you say... real (althouh is not) brings you to identify with the characters and their situations and everything. :P

ShadowTheUnknown - February 1, 2005 12:43 AM (GMT)
Yupp, that's what anime is for. And to provide entertainment. :P

Naruko - February 1, 2005 12:54 AM (GMT)
And cause kids ceasers with its flashy light effects :P ^-^

ShadowTheUnknown - February 1, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but I mean, how often does that happen?

Naruko - February 1, 2005 12:59 AM (GMT)
Never...... unless the kids high on suger and caffiene but thats there fault

ShadowTheUnknown - February 1, 2005 01:04 AM (GMT)
My point exactly.

Voltei - February 1, 2005 02:14 AM (GMT)
I believe that the only reason that people are trying to ban anime is because for most Americans, when they see something animated, they naturally assume that it's marketed towards kids.

However, in the case of anime, animation is only a form of media and it could encompass a wide variety of genres as well as a wide variety of audiences.

Such a move to ban anime is impossible since it is now so wide-spread here.

It's not like how "traditional" media like movies and TV shows are any better than what's in a manga book or anime show....

Crystal Velvet - February 1, 2005 07:27 AM (GMT)
^ Nicely said.

Okay, did any of you guys read the posted petition? I just have to comment on this:

"To: George Bush"

. . . and then it says . . .

"... Anime is NOT corrupting the youth of America, and since when has America become a country of Christians? Isn't there a SEPARATION of Church and State? Isn't this a ban on our Freedom of Speech? And Freedom of Press? ..."

Does anyone else find this hilarious? I'm not going to point out why... if you get it, you get it ^_^

... Moving right along, a US Ban on Anime would only cause all of us who adore anime to seek underground methods of obtaining it. The US Government doesn't want that - if it's a booming business, they profit off taxes from the companies & from its sales.

What really needs to happen is an understanding of anime, not a banning of anime. Instead of running from something that is different and new, people need to know more about it - especially parents. It's not all like Pokemon nor is it all yaoi or x-rated. Appreciation comes from understanding - and we really need to realize this as our world becomes much more globalized.

TOYI1SOCCER - February 1, 2005 06:44 PM (GMT)
yeah, I have experienced from my country to here that sooooo many shows have not made it here, that means the ban had been present, and the ones who made it where slautered.

:P

Malach - February 1, 2005 07:08 PM (GMT)
There will be no bann, just as there is no ban on videogames, music, etc.

Enigma Zero - February 3, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
Ok, just a few things...

-That petition gets rewritten and posted all over the internet every so many years. I remember the scare when the last one hit and it was "Dear President Clinton." It's just Internet Urban Legend.

-The 2 best examples that spring to my mind when you talk about butchered anime due to content are...

DBZ: They took violent garbage with crude jokes and turned it into long and drawn out garbage that sometimes doesn't make any sense.

Vampire Hunter D: 90% of the ending of this movie was cut. Without going into spoilers lemme put it like this. Hero walks into room for big battle, big battle is completely edited out, ending is shown, and credits roll.

-Voltei's post was pretty much on the money here. The problem isn't anime and it's perception. It's simply a difference of what is and is not accpetable in some countries. In the UK, for example, it is perfectly ok to show nudity past 10PM, but ONLY if the nudity is required and helps to drive the storyline of the show(aka you can't just have naked people for the heck of it, but if you had an episiode where The Tardis ended up in a Nudist Colony then that's something else entirely).

If anything anime is stronger now than it has ever been in the past. When I 1st got into the scene it was pretty much underground. Now you have chanels like G4techTV showing anime and CN used to completely butcher whatever anime they chose to show, but in the last year they've been butchering less and less. Now the only thing you really have to worry about as far as US anime is HORRIBLE Dubbing(see .Hack//Sign). ;)

Malach - February 3, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Anime/Manga is going the way of every fad. Too many people, putting out too much crap. 90% of it is becoming very Homogenous. You are going to see a revolution in non Anime cartoons and comics. . . . (it has already started in American comics. The Good ones, the art and stories blow away Manga.)

TOYI1SOCCER - February 3, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
agree, man stop the killing :P

Enigma Zero - February 4, 2005 05:27 AM (GMT)
Yes Malach, but only part of it is a fad here in the US. The Japanese may be making some shows in the "Catch em" genre, but they're still chruning out the same level of content when it comes to anime and manga.

The only thing this current fad does is make certain retailers a little more bravein carrying titles. While garbage like DBZ and Beyblade may be getting the ratings from fanboys and children it allows people like me to work on picking up things like X TV, NOIR, and Vandread. :D

Pilaf - February 4, 2005 05:28 AM (GMT)
I don't really consider it a fad. It may be a fad to some people, but I am not one of those who the only thing they've watched outside of TV is Naruto. THOSE are animé fad people. It will die out with them. It will stay with me. You just have to know where to look to find what you're looking for.

Malach - February 4, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
By fad . . . I mean that in 5 years, it will slip back out of the mainstream, just like everything else.

Enigma Zero - February 4, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
To clarify, Anime in it's current popularity arc in the US is a fad. That doesn't mean it will die when the fad ends..just go underground.

Pilaf, the subject of your disdain are called Fanboys. They're pretty much easily distinguishable by using the phrases "X is the best anime series ever!" and "I'm huge into anime. My favorites are X, Y, and Z." with the variables filled in with garbage like Dragonball Z, Beyblade, or some other either horrible or horribly butchered series that they've only seen on CN/Fox/Fox Fam/Action/G4TechTV/whatever.
