Title: Distro
Description: A lot of them
myork - April 28, 2005 06:21 PM (GMT)
I was given this
linkWhich shows the different distrobutions of Linux out there.
A lot more than I thought. If you click on each distro it will show what version of each package is included (for the major packages).

I've finally decided to ftp some of the bigger distributions (like debian, and soon after, slackware). I should be done downloading all of debian by july :lol: :rolleyes: ..... :unsure: :wacko: -_-
donprogc++ - May 29, 2005 01:24 AM (GMT)
I thought you bought a cd of debian off of ebay :huh:
My next distro to try is slackware i like its principle of KISS and many other features :)
Gmakermaniac!!! - June 2, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
at the time of that post I was downloading a newer version than the one I got. now I'm getting slackware instead
Ceti - June 2, 2005 01:56 AM (GMT)
And a fine choice might I add good sir B). Not too hard to install and nice all round.
Gmakermaniac!!! - June 3, 2005 12:43 AM (GMT)
neat. I hope I'll finally be able to get a desktop environment running this time. Coding in VI is painfull =P

ah, desktop enviroments are for noobs.
all you need is vi, and w3m and you are ready to go :)
Incubator - June 3, 2005 11:51 AM (GMT)
for complex projects with 100+ source files you wish you had an IDE ;-)
myork - June 3, 2005 03:01 PM (GMT)
Use vim rather than vi (even i have upgraded).
Sytax colouring now included as standard.

It depends on your needs. If you want to efficiently create applications, an easy to use, efficient interface is essential. someone with 18 gwam like me can't waist their time on command line ALONE.
edit: most people using lunux as a shelter from microsoft would like an interface like that of windows, so it would helpif I had it to code for it. and there are many desktop environment dependant programs that I would really enjoy being able to run =P

After you've installed Slackware, and rebooted you'll be faced with a console log in screen. Log in as root and type startx, if you're lucky and everything is set up it'll boot to your window manager of choice. If you get stuck head over to
Linux Questions where there are plenty of people willing to help (there's even a dedicated Slackware forum).
Cheers
Amos

I knew how to start it :P thanks for the link though, I may need it sometime

Okay here's my ongoing linux story:
My first encounter with linux was the little thing that came with bochs. I had already wanted linux, but that didn't satisfy me too well. Later I downloaded DSL. I couldn't get it going (though I probebly could now). After that I wanted a bigger distribution so I ordered debian over ebay. *fart noise* X11 was outdated and couldn't start. I was stuck in the command line again. Now I downloaded slackware (only one disk). It's currupted -_- checksum mismatch
IllegalEnzyme - June 8, 2005 09:42 AM (GMT)
how long did slackware take?
i got Mandriva off the front of a linux magazine for about £6.00, it rocks but some things i still need to fix, like the modem and printer drivers, not to mention the graphics card!
donprogc++ - June 8, 2005 05:04 PM (GMT)
You can go to the library and get a book about linux and it comes with a cd of one of the many distros
Gmakermaniac!!! - June 12, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
ah! good idea donprogc++.... f**k I owe the library so much money :(
Gmakermaniac!!! - June 17, 2005 11:49 AM (GMT)
I am making this post from inside Damn Small Linux. I'm very happy for some sort of reason... even though there are like no programs at all here

The best distro that I know of is Ubuntu. Its totally free (they even send you the cd for free!!) and is the most popular distro in
Distro Watch. It looks really nice with GNOME Desktop Environment. Is updated frequently and a new release is launch every six months.
donprogc++ - June 19, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
Free for only shipping and handling?
If it is completely free can you post a direct link

ubuntu isnt a good distro imo, it has no root account, you cant install 3rd party software that is not in hte list of Ubuntu's supported software and due to the lack of a root account you cannot properly configure things
Nforce doesnt work there either
Gmakermaniac!!! - July 1, 2005 03:25 PM (GMT)
:( Ive been waiting this long for that -_-
Muphin - July 10, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
Be smart, choose gentoo!
It's a pain in the f@#&ing a@# to install it if you're a linux noob, but its worth it. And once you've installed gentoo, you're pretty good with linux.
Oh and almost forgot, you might wanna wait until later in the year when KDE 4.0 comes out, its gonna beat the hell outta gnome! (Well, KDE always did).
