SYDNEY BRISTOW
Episode 21 – Legacy
“—you’ll just have to deal with it.”

As expected, some family ties were united. Still the editing, I thought, was too choppy, more than usual there far too many scenes going back and forth. Therefore, for the ease of writing this column and you reading it, I am going to take each thread in each act, for the most part, as a single scene.

After the usual opening review, Act 1 opens in Kyoto Japan where Sloane has taken Nadia to reveal what secrets Rambaldi designed into the green fluid. We see Nadia, under the influence of the elixir, doing some unusual writing. Obviously, it is a formula or a mathematical equation that will lead to the message from Rambaldi. She wants to know why he could do this to her if he is her father. He tells her the story of Abraham (from the Bible) equivocating what he is doing to what Abraham did. It is obvious Sloane will risk his daughter’s life as well as his own wealth, in order to get the secret. As Sloane is looking at the papers with this strange writing on it, we can see it looks like the <o>, Nadia has gotten a hold of the writing pen and uses it to help her unlock the handcuffs. When she does, she stabs Sloane with the pen and destroys the green liquid. Sloane subdues Nadia and handcuffs her to the table.

Meanwhile back in L. A., in the briefing room, Sydney tells Dixon and the others that Nadia was raised in an orphanage in Buenas Aires, Argentina. She was recruited to be an agent six years ago and her first assignment was Chechnya. The CIA has intercepted a call from Sloane to a fixer. Sloane tells him he will pay five million dollars if the man will break into a bunker 21 in Novgorad, Russia and get the elixir. It is the place where the Russians were doing Rambaldi research before they shut it down in 1980. Vaughn wants to know if Lauren has been traced. Weiss says the FBI has been going over her letters, files, and notes to see if there is any clue. Dixon orders Vaughn and Sydney to get bottles of fluid they can before Sloane’s man can find them. Unfortunately, Lauren and Sark are contacted by the fixer and Sark offers to double what Sloane did if he would bring the bottles to them.

Vaughn talks to Sydney and tells her he takes full responsibility for what happened (how nice of him) and that he messed up. He wants to know if she can look past it. Sydney says she will think about it.

In Novgorad, Sydney and Vaughn enter the bunker area and find one guard dead on top. Just before the entrance to the bunker, are more dead soldiers. They cautiously enter only to find the GRE aka green Rambaldi elixir, gone. Vaughn opens a computer and begins uploading the information on it to Marshall. Sydney is gathering samples of the liquid left. Sydney joins Vaughn at the computer. They see a little girl writing something. Is it her sister? She looks around and she sees a chair with restraints. She is drawn to it. Suddenly there are shouts and three soldiers enter with their guns drawn. Behind them, Katya Derevko strides into the room, wearing a Colonel’s uniform of the SVR, Russia’s secret service.

Act two starts where Act 1 left off. Katya introduces herself to Sydney, who obviously was not surprised. (Jack must have told her she had Aunts and how her mother got Katya to help rescue her and Vaughn in North Korea.) Katya tranqs the three soldiers.

The three leave in a jeep. Katya charms her way out of the bunker area just as the soldiers in the bunker wake up and tell the guards the Colonel was kidnapped. The jeep is fired upon, but the three escape.

At a CIA safe house in St. Petersburg, Vaughn is after the CIA to get satellites working to find Sark and Lauren. Inside, Sydney and Katya are talking about Nadia. Sydney tells her that she saw a little girl on film writing something. Katya says that she was taken before it was finished. Vaughn interrupts saying it was his father who took her away and hid her. . She confirms Irina’s story that she told Sydney and Jack in the Passage 2, that when Irina returned to Russia, she was jailed. Several months later, she gave birth to Nadia. The baby was only one day old when she was taken from Irina, who never saw her again. Katya joined the (SVR) secret service then to help Irina find the baby. Sydney tells Katya that Sloane has Nadia. Katya is stricken by the news.

Back in Japan, Sloane has continued talking to Nadia. He says he isn’t angry with her for destroying the elixir, but proud of her courage. She tell him about the orphanage and how she always kept herself messy because she knew somewhere her father was looking for her and she didn’t want to be adopted.

“But if I knew I was waiting for you, I would have cleaned up.” It is a slap in the face and he deserves it.

When Sloane goes to pick up the fluid, he finds Sark and Lauren. They demand a partnership. They have the three canisters of the fluid and he has the Passenger. He reluctantly agrees wanting to know their terms. Since they want to see what is happening while he gives the fluid to her, he takes them back to his stronghold. They watch in amazement at what happens when Nadia is under the influence of the liquid.

Meanwhile in L.A., Marshall tells them what might be happening when the fluid is injected into Nadia. If I understood half of what he said, I could tell you. However, the best description is that it acts as a muscle memory.

Dixon orders Jack to work with Katya who is going over Sloane’s financial records.

Sydney and Vaughn watch Marshall at the computer and they see the doctor who is injecting the little girl. There is a reflection in the room. Marshall enhances it and is horrified to see it is Suit and Glasses. Katya gives them the information on his name, which is Dr. Xuan Lee. Sloane actually met with him two times in the past two months in Zurich. He is now working in the bioweapons facility in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Vaughn and Sydney are to go find out more.

As Vaughn leaves, Jack catches up with him and gives him the key to his storage facility where he will have access to papers, money and unregistered weapons as well as the means to dispose of Lauren’s body. He tells Vaughn that he will not do himself or Sydney any good so long as he cannot get closure. (In Jack’s world, kill her. He really never himself has closure because Irina left before he realized how deadly she was to him.) Vaughn says he isn’t like Jack and he would never use it. Jack tells him to take the key and leaves.

Act three opens with Jack and Katya talking about Sloane who transferred $900,000 from one bank to two others. Jack has located a company that received the $900,000 from Sloane. Katya wants to know if he knew about the affair between Irina and Sloane. It’s painful, but he says no, it was one of Irina’s many secrets.

“Hearing Irina talk about you, it was impossible not to be intrigued.” Jack tries to ignore this, but Katya says, “I find you sexy, Jack, deal with it.”

Jack still ignores her and says that it’s possible he spent the money for a security system. Katya sits back in despair. He knows the best T C Cummings who is federal prison. He calls to make arrangements to see her.

In Cuba, Sydney comes out of the ocean yelling in Spanish to the two guards. She looks hot in a bikini top and cut off jeans. As the guards listen while ogling her, Vaughn appears in a wet suit and shoots them. They hurry inside the house and find Dr. Xuan Lee who is our old ‘friend’, Suit and Glasses, who just loves pulling teeth. He is obviously into an experiment with some potent fluid, euphemism for acid, when they enter. Sydney wants to know what they learned from Nadia as a little girl. He tells her she was a conduit to Rambaldi. Vaughn is angry and wants to know where Sloane is? He doesn’t know where Sloane is and Vaughn actually uses the acid on him. (Hooray for Vaughn, he actually looked mean). Of course, Sydney is horrified at what he has done.

Act 4 opens with Jack talking to T. C. Cummings. She wants out with time served if she helps. She did design the system for Sloane. She doesn’t know where he set up the system. She only gave him the specs with seven variables and he took it from there.

Sydney is plainly upset with Vaughn. She tells him that what he saw at the center where Dr. Lee was, scared her. Vaughn said it scared him too. He knows she wants to find her sister. He also doesn’t want Lauren to get away with what she did. Sydney says she might and…”you’ll just have to deal with it.”
T. C. and Marshall talk. He has designed a program to locate where Sloane is by the materials he purchased and where everything was shipped. She is surprised and asked him how long it took him. He told 45 minutes during his lunch break. She tries to recruit him to work for her. She tells him she’ll pay him a million a year. Surprised he tells her that he’s happy with the medical benefits the CIA gives him with coverage for his child; besides, “I like working for the good guys.” There’s a beep and Marshall looks at the computer telling her Sloane is in Kyoto, Japan. She’ll have to go to an on-site junction box to know which variable he used in the security system.

In Kyoto, Sloane has given Nadia one bottle and she seems to have come out of it sooner. Sloane is worried now that her system is becoming tolerant. Lauren insists he give Nadia another bottle. Sloane is hesitant saying it could kill her. Lauren says he should be willing to make the sacrifice, “since we have all made sacrifices.” I took it from her words she was thinking of her father’s death (even thought dear old Mom pulled the trigger and Sark had his own father killed). Reluctantly, Sloane is about to send more fluid into Nadia, when two of his guards rush in and cover Lauren and Sark. Sloane pulls out the needle from Nadia’s arm.

At the same time, Sydney, Vaughn and T. C. fly over in a helicopter and drop down to the ground by a rope. They contact Weiss who is with a special CIA force. Syd and Vaughn have to locate a junction box so T C can disable the systems. She does and Weiss leads a CIA team to overcome the guards. Two guards rush into the room, holding guns on Lauren and Sark.

ACT 5 begins as Sloane tells Lauren and Sark their deal is off. Lauren talks to Sloane, ostensibly to compare him to her father who would do anything for her, even take the fall. She is doing this to distract Sloane from watching Sark. Sark releases the button on the brief case and pulls a couple of guns killing Sloane’s guards, but before he can get to Sloane, Sydney and Vaughn appear guns firing. As Sydney and Vaughn fire after Lauren and Sark, one of Sloane’s men comes and gets him to leave. Lauren and Sark run out, barely escaping in a hail of bullets. Vaughn chases after them with his own gun blazing, leaving Sydney alone. She yells, but he has disappeared, leaving Nadia and Sydney alone. Sydney releases her. Another goon arrives shooting. Sydney and he have a fight and then a second guard regains consciousness and, pointing a gun at Sydney tells her to freeze. Nadia saves her bacon with a well-placed shot. Lauren and Sark reach their SUV and Sark tosses her a RPG, which she fires at Vaughn and T. C. who duck. It destroys the van behind him.

In L. A. after the debriefing in which Dixon assures Sydney Nadia is being well taken care of he wants to know if the mission was compromised, allowing Sloane to get away. Sydney says everything was fine, protecting Vaughn from Dixon’s wrath. Outside, she snaps at him. She won’t lie for him again. He left her alone. There was no back-up and it was Nadia who saved her. She warns him she doesn’t know if they will ever get back to where they were before her disappearance until he can deal with Lauren’s betrayal. He is not the man she loved. She turns and leaves him.

Dixon stops Jack in the hall and tells him that with everything going on about Sloane, the rest of the staff knows Irina had an affair with him. He says that if Jack wants to talk…
But Jack says quietly, “I’m good, thanks.” He leaves.

Jack appears at Katya’s hotel room and he says, “For the record, I can go through this alone.” Jack kisses her and they move inside.

The last scene is Vaughn going to the storage facility held by Jack. He stands before the weapons’ rack, pulling down a rifle with a serious scope on it. He sights down the barrel as the episode ends.

RANDOMIZING

When Katya tells Sydney that Nadia was taken away the day after she was born, you can see this means something to Sydney, who now knows her Mother probably never saw her younger daughter again. We can also assume when Irina, who was trying to find her, heard that a CIA agent stole her from the KGB, was angry enough to kill Bill (ha ha) in a manner not nice.

The KGB obviously took Nadia first and when she was little, tried to find out what Rambaldi’s message was by injecting the fluid. When Bill Vaughn stole the little girl and hid her in the Argentina orphanage, they could not continue the research and had to shut down.

A point of information: The SVR (Sluzhba Vneshney Rasvedki) is the equivalent of our CIA. They don’t wear uniforms. I found this out by asking a Russian internet friend last year.

DISCUSS

Sydney and Vaughn are at odds. He’s fast becoming bitter and not the man she loved before she disappeared. He helped her get over her acute hatred of Sloane. Do you think Sydney will be succeed immediately? Or will it take more time? Why in either case?

Is Jack succumbing to a new relationship with another Derevko? Will Elena be around to pick up the pieces if this does not work out? (I ask this tongue-in-cheek) What do you think about this twosome?

Knowing now what happened when Irina gave birth to Nadia can you blame her actions? Do you think Irina was working again with the KGB and was privy to her young daughter’s ordeal? Or was she searching for her when she learned BV had hidden her away? Perhaps she used torture to get the information given that we know he could only be identified through dental records.

Do you think Nadia’s words, “he was protecting me,” mean she will be Sydney’s enemy once she is with ‘her father’ again? Is this going to mean the fight that will end both their lives according to the Prophecy?

What about Sark and Lauren? What is Sark’s drive to learn more about Rambaldi? Does it have to do with his father who he had killed? Do you think he might regret his actions.

Woohoo! :P

k...I'm back...no help in the explanation of Nadja timing....but I'll give a go here.....
*cracks knuckles*

Sydney and Vaughn are at odds. He’s fast becoming bitter and not the man she loved before she disappeared. He helped her get over her acute hatred of Sloane. Do you think Sydney will be succeed immediately? Or will it take more time? Why in either case?
I think that it will take a bit longer to succeed because with Sloane on her part....she didn't have that close of a relationship with the guy. With Vaughn, I mean, it's his wife! He had a very intimate relationship to her.....and he's soo in love with Sydney and was soo devasted by her "lose"...just to see Sydney and know that his wife was a part of taking Sydney out of his life and causing her pain, suffering....him pain and suffering....taking so much away from her like that....it's gotta hurt to be the person that was duped by her. He's not gonna get over it quick....but if ANY one can break him out of his shell, it's his Sydney! And he's got something that Jack never had....his one true love (MY speculation, but COME ON people! It's just about fact by now!)...with him, by his side......so he should recover. Hopefully.

Is Jack succumbing to a new relationship with another Derevko? Will Elena be around to pick up the pieces if this does not work out? (I ask this tongue-in-cheek) What do you think about this twosome?
*cringe* :meanie01: <~~that one's Irina...and probably anyone else in AliasFanWorld.
'nuff said.

I can NOT wait for Lena Olin to sink her teeth into this story line about her youngest daughter being ripped out of her arms at just one day old.....from my impressions I got from Katya...the way she said that the ONLY reason she joined was to look for her sisters baby girl.....you KNOW this is gonna be one goooood storyline next season!!! And no, I don't think Irina knew what they were doing to Nadja.....cause dude...Irina? Standing by while THAT was happenin?? Hello...have you ever seen what a moma bear is capable of if one of her cubs is in distress in anyway? Yeah, CHILD'S PLAY when it comes to THAT women and her babies! :reallyexcited: *winklenafanwink*
But here's another delima.....does/did Irina know at the time that her newest child was in fact Arvin Sloanes? Because she was married....she had Sydney already, at what age Sydney was when Nadja came into existance is my big confusion, but I'm thinkin' more towards no..... Just a thought I had..... :)
As far as BV comes about.....I'm still confused on the timing of it all...lost  ...so, yeah..needs more input here before moving on  .......I think though that yes.....you taketh the babe...the moma shall kill....don't matter if ya' the Pope or somethin'!!! :P

Do you think Nadia’s words, “he was protecting me,” mean she will be Sydney’s enemy once she is with ‘her father’ again? Is this going to mean the fight that will end both their lives according to the Prophecy?
Ooohh interesting point!!! That's a really good theory! Gonna have to wait and see....I think it's entirely possible though....I'd hope not...but it's JJ....who knows! :D

What about Sark and Lauren? What is Sark’s drive to learn more about Rambaldi? Does it have to do with his father who he had killed? Do you think he might regret his actions.
HAHA...a match made in hell I think! Perfect for eachother and I hope they keep them that way...I LOVE seeing David and Melissa work together...they're fabulous and look DAYUM hot too together! :reallyexcited: Sark's drive? Duh....anything the other one wants.....boy's easily amused by odd, dangerous, and weird things.......must of been a wonderful child to try to raise! :P

k...that's it for now!! And YEAHH!! first one too hehe....see ya next century when the bloody finally air the finale!! :P

I've got to start off by mentioning the great sets this ep. That house in Kyoto looked so real.

1. I think Vaughn will come around. But he is seriously being pulled in opposite directions by daddy and daughter Bristow. I once again state my claim that Jack is the most evil character--he just happens to be on our side. "Here take my key, kill and dismember your wife--you'll feel better!" Geez, what advice! But I think Sydney will take care of Vaughn.

2. I think Jack needs a good affair, might make him a bit less tense!

3. Can't wait for Lena to come back! I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait!

4. I don't think Nadia's words foreshadow peace and harmony among the sisters. But I don't want them to fight! I want Syd to have a happy family life!

5. All I know about Sark and Lauren is that they will be stirring up trouble--well at least Sark. Let's see if Lauren makes it past the finale.

And as for the finale--three weeks is better than the four months we'll have to wait for next season!

OK re Irina and Nadia...she had to be pregnant when she left Jack and Sydney. That means she was born in 1982 and was about six when Syd saw her on the video. There is no way she could carry a baby and Jack not know it!
Bill Vaughn. No one ever said when he was killed. Everyone assumed it was around the same time as the others. In order to steal Nadia from the KGB, he was alive! Perhaps the brutal torturing, leaving only his dental records as the way he was identified was someone else. (Remember Vaughn said he was ten when his father was killed) Not Bill? Perhaps he was now with Friends of Rambaldi group who were monitoring the child's placement. Someone mentioned the possibility she was a Project Christmas child (KGB trained).

Perhaps! :D

It's interesting too, that Jack has not said anything about staying away from Nadia to Sydney, only Vaughn. All these years protecting, shielding Sydney and not a warning from him. Hummm? Does he know something we don't?

I hope you all don't mind in which order I'll reply to.

Nadia's words "he was protecting me," do foreshadow some rift between her and Sydney. I think there might be a fight in Season 3 once JJ can figure something out ... a twist we haven't seen/thought of yet.

As for Irina, I have to agree that she didn't know about what the KGB was doing to Nadia. I doesn't make sense for her to know and not try to rescue her ....

I do believe that Sark will continue his Rambaldi obsession, with Lauren by his side, but I believe that Sark will be the one calling the shots ... supposing Lauren is apprehended by the CIA. Then Vaughn can get his 'closure' that Jack suggested ... or they could hold Lauren at Camp Harris.

It would be good for Jack to have an affair, but it won't be LOVE since there is only one Irina ... but for the meantime until Lena returns it will have to do for now.

The situation involving Vaughn and his obsession with Lauren .... I think Jack and Sydney would respond differently. Jack probably understands the sense of betrayal that Vaughn felt and the hatred ... remember in Season 2 after Irina resurfaced? Lol. Jack recovered alone. Vaughn has Sydney to help him.

I think it will take time, a lot, Vaughn just doesn't forget about his wife's betrayal.

it's interesting, defenitly a great new plot but I'm sure both Katya and Jack will have regrets about this later.

I understand her reactions, I'm sure most people would result to similar actions if they had their child taken away from them.

not anytime soon cause then there wouldn't really be a show left. but I can see Nadia turning against Sydney evenatually.

I think it's too late to regret his actions now, and he seems like he's just in it for the money or whatever Rambaldi has waiting for all of them.

AND FINALLY, DAMNATION, WE HAVE TO WAIT THREE WEEKS BEFORE WE GET THE FINALE!

yeah wauw, they're all so evil! three weeks?! grrr.

and very nice job of course on the column, sorry I didn't reply earlier but thanks for the pm.
