SYDNEY BRISTOW
Episode 11 – Full Disclosure
“Do Your Thing.”

Wow, what an episode. Almost everything we wanted to know about what happened to Sydney. There were a few loopholes, but for the most part, we watched what happened to our heroine.

The story opens with a group of people examining the cube from all angles. Sydney asks Marshall what they are doing and he tells her they are packing it up to take to some unknown destination. Sydney, who actually obtained the cube, asks them where they are going with it, but they won’t tell her.

She goes to Jack because now another piece of something that could tell her what happened to her is gone. Jack warns her that he and she have already broken several Federal laws and it would be best to examine the information they have to see if anything was overlooked and if so, pursue it. Sydney takes the information to her home, studying every detail when she hears a noise. Removing her gun, she checks both inside and then outside, but sees no one. However, when she goes back inside, she is struck in the back with a tranquilizer.

Sydney wakes up on board a plane. Looking around, she sees FBI Director Kendall. He is looking at her with more kindness on his face then he did when he was running the Center. He tells her he’s sorry they had to do it this way. He also discloses he is with the Department of Special Research and was never FBI.

Sydney wants to know what it has to do with her, and he says they need to talk.
He knows most of the story behind her being gone for two years. She wants to know why he didn’t say something sooner and he responds:

“Because you asked me not to.”

Now he begins the story. “You died.” They thought it was her body they found and that they were her ashes scattered in the ocean. Nine months after her death, Kendall got a phone call from Rome, from Sydney. She told him she had escaped the Covenant and wanted to return. He went to Rome and she told him what had happened to her after the fight with Francie/Allison.

She woke up in a van, strapped down, with duct tape across her mouth. The man with her injected her with a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzed. She could see and hear, but not move. They were at the beach. Ahead of her she saw seven figures and then watched Vaughn throw something into the sea. While she watched, the man beside her told her that in order for a DNA match to be made, they had to take pulp from her teeth and inject it into the body they had substituted so the DNA match could be done.
She watched with tears on her face as Vaughn and Weiss hug, as the others including Jack, Dixon, Marshall, Kendall and the preacher walk to their cars. The man whispers in her ear that he has been hired by the Covenant to change her.

“They will mourn and move on, find someone else perhaps. Sydney Bristow is gone.”

It was evident the Covenant was after her, that she was somehow crucial to their operations. Kendall shows her a picture of the man she recognizes. She tells him she killed him a week after she was reinstated into the CIA. (They showed the scene in which he is shot twice by her.) Kendall tells her that they took her to a Covenant facility near St. Petersburg. The man’s name was Oleg Mavrashik. (At this point, it was hard to hear his name, so I spelled it as close to phonetically as I could).

Kendall returns to the story she told him. Oleg spent months trying to break her down. Using brainwashing protocol, she was sensory deprived, electro shocked (sounds familiar), and then he injected one arm with barbiturates to make her sleep and the other with amphetamines which shocked her awake.

“I will kill you, you son of a bitch, I promise.” (As we know, she did!)

Once he thought you were broken, he began a conditioning process to change her identity from Sydney Bristow to Julia Thorne. He disorientated you, he withheld food, and bombarded you with your life’s history as Julia Thorne. When at last he had a break through, Sydney now Julia, was taken before the Covenant council. They gave her a test. They told her to kill a man being brought into the room with the knife on the table. She did so.

Sydney was upset about this news. Kendall however told her that if she had not killed him, she would be dead also. The fact was she did it, still in control. This was because when she was a child, Jack had programmed her with the Project Christmas protocols. Built into the program was a fail-safe that would prevent her ever being brainwashed.

“He hard-wired you to stand up to some pretty intense efforts to brainwash you.” Kendall tells her.

She wanted to know where her father was. “Under deep cover,” was the answer. Kendall also told her she had to go back to the Covenant. Instead, Sydney decided to go home. She needed to see Vaughn and the others. However, when she saw him, he was with Lauren. Sydney called Kendall back and told him she would do whatever he asked. So now she was a double-agent AGAIN working for the Covenant and for the DSR.

She became Julia Thorne. She was sent to Algeria where she met Simon Walker, a thief. They both worked for the Covenant, which wanted to get the cube. They sent them on several missions, but it was through Simon that she found Adrian Lazeray, a Rambaldi expert also. He had been studying Rambaldi for over thirty years. Julia was ordered to kill him. She set up a meeting however to tell him he had to do exactly as she wanted in order to live.

Now Sydney wants to know where they are going and Kendall tells her to Nevada where he runs a project called Black Hole.

“I never heard of Project Black Hole.”
“Thank you.” Kendall is delighted. He hands her a folder in which there are many pictures of the Rambaldi artifacts. Most of them she provided and she was a legend among the many researchers. He also relates that the Covenant believes she is the chosen one mentioned in the prophecy.

“My mother said that just before she disappeared.” We see the scene from The Telling where Irina gives her daughter that information that it was Sydney not her who was the chosen one. (This is the first time we’ve seen her all season and even in a “re-run”, a welcome sight.)

He honored her request. The Covenant had her and if they had the cube, they would have everything to fulfill the prophecy. Julia and Lazeray located the cube and went to a cave. They walked a mile until they came to the vault. Lazeray had devoted 30 years to collecting all of the keys (they didn’t say how) and the two of them began opening the chambers to the vault. One of the locked chambers was tight and Lazeray had to hold it open as Sydney finished opening her side. As soon as the vault opened, the chambers slammed shut and Lazeray’s hand was caught inside. The cave was beginning to collapse. Julia took a machete she carried and chopped him free. She had the cube and helped Lazeray out of the cave.

Kendall then tells Sydney that after she got the cube, he expected her back, but she never showed. Instead he received a DVD from her. “It tells what happened to your memory. You might want to sit down for this,” he says.

Sydney watches herself as Julia begin the next part. As Julia, she tells him that she cannot go along with their agreement. She knows that the DNA will never be safe. So she was going to do something with the cube. She found a doctor who did advance research into long and short-term memory. She would have her short-term memory erased. “Do me a favor and don’t tell me anything that happened to me.”

So now she wants to know what changed. Why is he telling this to her now? Kendall says the Covenant believes that the second coming is by way of a child. It is their fanatic point of view that if they combine her eggs it with the Rambaldi DNA, they can produce the chosen one, a child, who would be destined to continue his work beyond his time.

Sydney gasps, pulling up her shirt, to reveal the scar. (Unh, uh…female eggs are not harvested in that manner, beloved writers…I don’t think that’s how the Covenant did it. The scar is something else at least I hope so.) She is terrified stating that she believes this is why they cut her open.

Now she goes back during last few weeks. Sloane handed her an envelope in which there was a code. One thing led to another until she finally worked out where she had hidden the cube. Sark was there but she took it back. She brought it to Los Angeles where the DSR took over and subsequently lost it.

Sydney having worked this out grabs a cell phone and calls Marshall back at the Center. She asks if he put a tracer on the cube. She knew he was fascinated by science and had a feeling he had done so. After he denies it twice, he tells he did, but not to tell anyone. He’s going to have a baby (Carrie actually) and can’t afford to lose his job. He can’t tell them exactly, but can tell them within ten miles.

Back in Los Angles, Sydney is getting ready for the raid. Going with her is Vaughn and Weiss who is concerned about the coldness between the two. She turns away and sees Dixon who is dressed to go with them. During the course of their conversation, he tells her he was in the office when she called Kendall. He tells her he knew everything, but was ordered not to tell anyone. She looks hurt, but he takes care of that saying that now he knows what it was like when she was an agent and working at SD-6.

The scene shifts to a huge building in Patagonia (which Dear Reader is to hell and gone in South America!) The strike force invades and begins shooting up the place. A comment here about Sark’s use of guns…I thought it a little over the top… The last Covenant man dies and Sark has escaped. Dixon and Sydney get up close to the lab. Dixon says that Kendall wanted everything taken back for analysis, but he looks at Sydney and tells her “Do your thing.”

Sydney destroys the test tubes and, I think, the cube material. I think she was thinking, “Harvest my eggs, will you? Take that!”

Lazeray is brought to Sydney. He had been tortured. He looks at her, saying, “Julia?”

Sark is escaping, but is making a call to someone, saying, “They have my father. Take care of it.”

On the way to the Naval Hospital, Sydney stays with Lazeray who obviously is in pain. He looks at her and says, “You know about the passenger? – the passenger.”

Sydney tells him they will have plenty of time to talk later. They move him out of the ambulance and turn the gurney. Suddenly two bullets strike him in the torso. Sydney calls the Center to tell them they are under fire and to send in a strike force. As she speaks, we see hands dismantling a sniper rifle. The camera pulls away to show Lauren. (Oh my, the Sydney/Vaughn shippers are screaming they knew it. She’s evil, evil and we hate her.) Lauren calls Sark, telling him it’s done.

DISCUSS:

As much as they told us, they left questions also.

Do you think this is the last we will hear of Rambaldi? (She laughs wickedly)

Now we know how valuable Jacks training of Sydney when she was young in the Project Christmas protocols. Will Sydney tell her Dad everything she did as Julia Thorne?

Kendall says he know most of the story. Did we get the whole story? Is Sydney unaware there is more or has she held back?

Who or what is “the passenger” that Lazeray asked Sydney about? Any wild ideas? I have one or two, but being burned too often, I’ll not state them yet.

It was an exciting episode! I was very pleased that it gave us so much information without drawing it out.
Even though I didn't trust Lauren, I was a little surprised to see her as the assassin.
When Vaughn finds out that his wife is working for the "other" side, he'll get a taste of what Jack went through when married to Laura/Irina.
Thanks, lenafan.

Not wild enough guess. :reallyexcited: I've of a mind that behind the scar on Sydney's body is the DNA remnant. THe remnant everyone thot was Rambaldi's is a snip of someone else, possibly even Sydney. Harvesting of eggs from a female is done by going up the fallopian tube to the ovary, not cutting open someone.
I think Sydney was smarter than everyone's given her credit for--However, argghh, I've been wrong before. Boy, it would be nice to hit the nail on the head.

I've been thinking. If the coded message with the key to Julia Thorne's Rome apartment was planted by the covenant as a way to find the cube, and the code used was one devised by Sydney's mother, does that mean that Irina was working with the covenant?

LightTraveller - January 20, 2004 03:00 AM (GMT)
hehe, as much as I hate reading things late, I really don't care in this case because you summ it all up so well. Though I'm too tired to answer the questions the will be in my mind for a long time to come and I thank you for that, also thanks for the pm.

Ummm, I just don't think she is...she's supposedly in hiding because of Sloane's interference somehow, probably because they tried double-crossing each other. My feeling is that if she were involved, she would be running it...not working for them. After all she controlled a lot of people world wide when she was The Man. This woman has serious issues with being an underling, no matter what. Still there is the possibility...but I'm not sure.

I have no excuse for being late...so I'm gonna reply here as well as the next eppy one....so sorry lenafan...but crazyness ensued at my house the weekend of this eppy and the week following was trying to do damage control....all I'll say is that my bro's house nearly burned down and we had to move him out pronto! Which then made us have to make room for him back here at home!
He's livin' in our living room now!

k...this eppy!!! :reallyexcited:
First off...KENDALL KICKS A$$!!!
I love that man now...he was soo good in this eppy...I have a new respect for ol' baldy now and am glad he and Sydney have a better relationship now!
Wow....dude, I CRIED when I saw all the s*&$ that Sydney went through while they tried to break her!!! :( I just wanted to give her a hug and a good sandwich!
Man, poor Syd!!
And then to find out that they took her 'babies' so to speak...that's, in my eyes y'all, like a form of rape!! You just want to hug the poor girl!!
And that she SAW her own funeral and then later Vaughn with Lauren!!
Grrr....I wanted someone to just run that blondy over!!!

k...now with the Q's...I think it's a NO on the thought that we're through on seeing anything to do with Rambaldi.....
And I think Sydney should tell what happened to her, or what she's told that she told Kendall about what they did to her, because I think he'd be a bit more eleviated with the guilt on doing that to Sydney when she was so young....that it was for a good reason, and that it pretty much saved her life! :)
I think that there's GOTTA be more to the story of Sydney's missing two years for sure....cause of what Kendall said, I think they made it a point to tell us that all that they revealed in this eppy isn't everything...something else will come up later...to knock us on our a$$es again, I bet!! :P
And I'm not sure I remember what the whole "the passenger" part of that eppy was about....I forget what you're refering too...too upset with learning what happened to Sydney!! :( I'd have to go back and re-watch it....and I forgot's to tape it!! :blush01:
Okay....going over the next threat now... :innocent:

OK, they do not take eggs from the ovaries thru an incision. They take eggs thru the fallopian tubes. They knocked her out for that little process. HOWEVER, let's talk about the passenger? Is Sydney carrying the passenger behind the scar? Possibly. We'll find out some day. :innocent:

Poor Syd!!! Can you imagine watching your own funeral :(

With this, I think you need to either quote it or change it to third person.

At this stage do we know what the deep cover was? Yes or No is sufficient ;)

She was sent to Algeria where she met Simon Walker, a thief.
Hehehe...and he gave her a 17/10...so did she move on from Vaughn (even a little bit). Surely her cover wouldn't have included screwing Simon into infinity?

No kidding! But under violent conditions, surely they still could have ripped them out that way, if she was unwilling to co-operate? Or, perhaps they just took a chunk of tissue and put it into brand new surrogate mother eggs?

QUOTE

I heard yards??? Cuz then Sydney said, "Marshall, that's called locating it".

QUOTE

Yeah, or astalavista my un-fertilized babies :D Okay...that was corny and spelled really badly, moving on...

I hate that they were right about her *pouts* Stupid S/V shippers.

QUOTE

Excuse me??? You mean to tell me that in the world of international espionage the 'intelligent' Covenant were so thick as to put all of their eggs in one basket? (haha for the REALLY bad pun). I don't bloody well think so! Besides...what the hell is the Rambaldi device, and surely Sloane still has more up his Milo-sleeve.

QUOTE
Now we know how valuable Jacks training of Sydney when she was young in the Project Christmas protocols. Will Sydney tell her Dad everything she did as Julia Thorne?
Everything? No...she wouldn't tell him about the crazy sex she had with Simon (ew for that conversation) but Simon told Jack, so the rest is secondary ;)

QUOTE
Kendall says he know most of the story. Did we get the whole story? Is Sydney unaware there is more or has she held back?
Sydney would never have told Kendall EVERYTHING, maybe a lot, but not everything. She'll know herself there is more...but how do you know there is more???

YES when Sydney was questioned by Kendall and two other disbelieving bureaucrats in Season One, he told her he was Asst. Dir. Kendall of the FBI. Seems like he was something else also. :ph43r:

Yes. He actually was in prison. Lindsey sent him there, why, we don't know. Ahhh now you remember... the deep cover was a euphenism for prison.

Oh :reallyexcited: :D :D you are a laugh a minute. I don't think she did it as much for the sex, but to maintain her identity as JT. Remember, she fooled the Covenant into believing she was brainwashed.

Kailey, eggs are harvested thru the fallopian tubes into the ovaries. Cutting them out would probably destroy them. :( It's my feeling that we may find out that Syd is carrying "the passenger" that Lazeray referred too before he was killed.

In the world of Alias, there is already "more"...would the writers tell everything in one episode?
