SYDNEY BRISTOW
Remnants – Episode 10
Love, Death and Tissue

After a review of what happened the week before, we see what Sydney sees behind the door marked 47. It’s Will, who’s standing in her kitchen with a box of cereal labeled St. Aidan Flakes. She also reveals that she fought herself and killed herself. Jack has pulled her out before she flat lines again. Vaughn helps. She has to contact Will.

On board Sloane’s plane, Sydney tells them that her other self told her the Covenant had kidnapped her and that it was no accident that I don’t remember. Jack insists she contact Will to find out what that means. He will call and find out who and where he is. Jack also tells her that her memory erasure was no accident and that, according to Dr. Bressels, she was probably a willing participant. Sydney says she doesn’t understand and Jack responds that the doctor didn’t understand it either. She has to go to see Will while he and Vaughn return to CIA and placate Lindsey.

On their way back, Jack and Vaughn meet with Sloane who tells them Lindsey, who has his suspicions, has agreed to the exchange. He, of course, does not mention Lindsey’s blackmail threat and the result at least in Sloane’s mind of what is to come. Sloane is to make the voice alterated call while Jack and Vaughn are at the CIA. Sydney will contact him as to the time and place when she is ready to return.

Vaughn pauses as Jack returns to his car and then tells Sloane, “If you betray her, I swear to you, no matter what it costs me, I will kill you.
Sloane answers that nothing will, “Don’t worry, Agent Vaughn, I love her too!” He just had to get that dig in as he seemed to be doing all season.

Our next scene shows us Will at his new job. He works in construction. Another employee tells him to meet for lunch and leaves. Will’s back is turned as Sydney approaches.
“Hi!” She says and he turns, incredulous and stunned.
“You’re dead.” He says.

She persuades him that it is her. She wants to talk to him. He agrees, turning to get his stuff, but pulls a gun, makes her get down on her knees and then pulls out his cell phone. He is going to call Langley. “You can’t, I’m a fugitive. If you make that call, you’ll burn me!”(Meaning they will take her back to Camp Williams and torture.) She asks him to ask her an obscure question that only Sydney would know. He does and she answers correctly. He pulls the gun down to his side and she grabs it, saying, “If I wanted to hurt you, you know I could.” She puts the gun down, crying, “You’re my best friend, my oldest friend and I love you.” They hug each other tightly.

Sloane meets Lindsey and tells him he found the sharpshooter. It will cost $500,000. “Done,” says Lindsey. “If he fails, I will turn over your dossier on your extra-curricular activities over to the Justice Department.” Dr. Bressels opens the warehouse door only to be shot in the thigh by Sark.

At lunch, Will tells Sydney he crawled out of the bathtub, the place was on fire, and a few days later woke up in the hospital. He thinks about the double, Allison Doren and thought that it was an insane story, but now that he’s heard about Sydney’s, hers is even worse. Sydney tells him Allison Doren is alive. Will say that he always regarded himself as a pacifist, but if he had the chance, he would kill her. Sydney goes on to tell him about the dream therapy and asks him about the view behind Door 47 and the box of St. Aidan flakes. Will says St. Aidan was the code name of his contact while he worked as an analyst for the CIA. He met with him several times. Sydney has him contact the man to set up a meet. “Tuesday at 11:00 p.m.” is the response in Warsaw.

In New Haven, Sark has Bressels hooked up to a morphine drip. Sark wants to know what Sydney revealed during the experimental dream. Bressels asks for a little more morphine, which Sark gives him. “She said she fought herself. That behind the door she found her friend Will. Her father said something about finding out where Will was in the witness protection program.” Sark kills Bressels by turning the morphine drip on high.

Back in LA, Jack is reporting to Lindsey what he and Vaughn had been doing the past few days. Lindsey states that he has re-read Jack’s file and sees that in 1983 he was captured by the East German Intelligence Service. However, according to the file, Jack survived two weeks making them believe he was a History Professor from Sweden. Lindsey provokes Jack into hitting him and orders the other agents to take them both into custody.

In Warsaw, Will and Sydney wait in a machinery shop of some kind. Sydney has wired Will so he can hear her. She tells him to tell his contact that he has Code 6 clearance and she wants him to ask about the Covenant. She waits further back and out of sight.

In the meantime, Marshall talks to Lindsey saying the tech department was unable to ID the voice as it was done through an anti-speech signal amortization device. Still it had to be the Covenant, because of the stealthy method used. He also expresses concern for Sydney, but Lindsey assures him they are doing everything to bring it to a safe and swift conclusion.

Will’s contact enters and she sees it is Lazeray. He does not have his left hand. Lazeray says he would not have come, but that he needs something. She tells Will to ask about the Covenant, because lives are at stake. Lazeray doesn’t want to talk about them. Will says Julia Thorne sent him. Lazeray stops and declares he doesn’t believe him. Sydney says to call him by his name. “Lazeray. Julia needs to see you.” Lazeray asks if they found it. Suddenly, a van pulls up. It’s Sark, who hits Lazeray with a tranq. Sydney rushes forward firing, she tells Will to duck out the back. Then she disappears, moments later pulling up behind Will in a car. Sark is driven back by her bullets. They leave before Sark can reach either of them.

At a Warsaw safe house, Will and Sydney are drinking. Sydney is fussing about what “it” might be and why the Covenant wants it. Will tells her to calm down that she will figure it out, because “you’re you.”

Vaughn and Jack are in a gray prison garb and handcuffed and facing each other. Jack tells him they would have ended up where they are no matter what happened in the office.

Jack’s next speech is one of the best ever delivered.
“Vaughn, Sydney can no longer be your concern.” Vaughn is puzzled. “The fact is we both have something in common. We both suffered through the death of the woman we loved, only to discover she was still alive. I know it’s hard, but this is not about you. I will not allow my daughter to become your mistress,” Vaughn protests. “…Your kindness tortures her. I can see it, what is does to her-- and I won’t have it.”

Back in Warsaw, Sydney and Will are still talking and in the background, Peggy Lee is singing “Fever.” Sydney is talking about Vaughn, Lauren and herself. She first says she hates Lauren, and then disavows it…
“I still love him.” She says.
“That sucks,” says Will.
Sydney goes on to say that the last year was awful, that she lost Francie and thought she lost him…that she’s been normal until now, but she’s depressed for the first time. “I’m just alone.”
Will pulls her into his arms. They hug and then kiss and…

In Buenas Aires, Sloane meets with the assassin and arranges to kill a government employee. (I am sorry, but readers, I knew then Lindsey was going to die, not Sydney.) The killer tells Sloane that he thought it was too good to be true that Sloane had become a humanitarian. Sloane leaves saying, “You’re a smarter man than I thought.”

Next Sark and Lazeray, son and father, have a go at it in Moscow. Lazeray tells Sark as his son he is a Romanoff also, but that doesn’t stop Sark from learning exactly what Will and his father talked about while in the machine shop in Warsaw. He uses torture to get it.

Sydney, being held by Will, hits on the idea that Sydney is Sydney; therefore, she does know where the “it” Lazeray alluded to might be. She checks her laptop and goes through names of hotels. She tells Will she would have hidden “it” in a hotel safety deposit box. She decides it is at Das Verlustzeitz Hotel in Graz.

At the same time, we see Allison leaning against the wall outside smoking. We hear a muffled scream and Sark walks out wiping his hands and tells her they are going to the Hotel Verlustzeitz in Graz.

Sydney and Will arrive at the hotel, looking like a pair of out of this world singers. It is obvious that many young people use the hotel. They ask for their room, which they reserved and go there. After kidding around with the bellhop, Sydney tells Will he was a little over the top in his performance and he responds it was easy since he was wearing “seat covers” as his costume. She pulls out her laptop as he turns on the TV to the checkout screen. Sydney hacks into their database and learns that Julia Thorne left something in box 23 (My God, didn’t they want to use 47 again?)

They go to the safe deposit vault, locate 23, and break in using a device Marshall might have given her. It looked like lipstick, but turned out to be something else more deadly. It “burned” right into number 23’s door. There was small box. She reaches for it, but a large magnet at the other end, pulls it away and into the hands of Sark, who winks at her.

Sydney goes one way and Will another way to head him off. Running down a long corridor, Sydney catches up with Sark and knocks him out, retrieving the box. In the mean time, Will meets up with Allison and after a fight, this time to his advantage, he stabs her, saying “This is for Francie.”

Sydney on her way back to LA calls Sloane. He tells her that Jack and Vaughn are in custody as well as his wife (I wasn’t too sure I heard it correctly) However she should go through with the plan because the CIA will then think she was in the Covenant’s custody. He says the device is being delivered to San Pedro. She is to drive herself up to the dock.

Sydney then reaches Weiss and gives him instructions to follow the delivery of the device. He is not to tell anyone about the phone call. She wants to know where the box is at all times. No one is to take possession of it but herself. Weiss promises to do so.

In San Pedro, Sydney drives up as Weiss tells her the satellite is tracking the truck with the Rambaldi device. She drives up. Lindsey is waiting with two more agents. She walks up with such a look on her face (If I could I would kill you) as Lindsey proclaims it was nice to see her safe. At that moment, a red lazar beam hits him, followed instantly by a rifle shot that hits Lindsey in the chest. It looks as though Mr. Lindsey is dead.

Sydney, now free, drives up to the parking lot where Sloane and two men wait. She accuses Sloane of killing Lindsey, which he denies. She climbs up into the truck and pries open the box, only to find some kind of iron objects inside. Again she accuses Sloane of having something to do with it, which again he denies. He tells her Lindsey never planned to give up the artifact. That it was a set-up all the time.
Back at CIA, everyone, including Dixon, is back where they should be. She walks up to Vaughn and her Dad and thanks them for helping her. Vaughn says “Gotta go, meeting Lauren.” Sydney stares after him, but Jack maintains his cool, saying nothing.

They are in op tech next and Marshall pulls out a vial that was in the box Sydney picked up in Graz. He says, “…oh and it’s human tissue, still vital, still active and there’s a name engraved on the box…Milo Rambaldi.” Jack and Sydney stare at each other.

Will is walking out with another CIA man, when Sydney intercepts him. He tells her that killing Allison didn’t give him the closure he thought he would have. He feels as empty as his dreams. They hug.
“I love you,” says Will.
“Me too,” responds Sydney. Then she looks after him as he starts back. “We never talked about that?”
He grins at her, “Yeah. I kinda like that.” He leaves.
Sydney stares after him a smile on her face.

I enjoyed the episode immensely because Allison and Lindsey (I hope) got what they deserved (the only reason I said “hope” is because people who should be dead seem to come back to life). Sloane was his usual smarmy self and it looks more and more like the bad guy returneth. We didn’t see Lauren, because, although not sure, I think she was “in custody” also. There are many questions too, that the episode raises. We are seeing more and more references to Rambaldi.

I know many fans are going to scream about Sydney’s having sex with Will. Hey get over it. She knew Will a long time before she knew Vaughn and he has professed his love for her a couple of times and not only in this episode. He did not get married either. You have to remember; she’s normal and has needs too. She is entitled. They are both single and neither was “stepping out.”

DISCUSS:

Lindsey agrees to pay $500,000 to have Sydney killed. Now where did he get that kind of money? Is he wealthy in the first place? Why would he pay that kind of money to take out a CIA agent? What is it she has on him? Okay four questions in one paragraph.

Jack warns Vaughn to keep his distance from Sydney. He has seen her agony and does not want it to continue. Do you agree with his method?

Those of you who have followed my columns know I think there is a mole inside the CIA who works for “Mom.” What do you think? Do you know or think you know who it might be?

Did Sark kill Lazeray, or just torture him? It was his father, who evidently beat him as a child. However, now we know Sark has Romanoff blood in him. Will that make any difference to him?

What significance does the fact that the East Germans captured Jack in 1983 have to do with the story line? Is there more to Jack, an already complex, difficult character, than we suspect. Why did Lindsey (or the writers, I should say) mention this fact? Will we learn more later?

Is Sydney’s role in the Rambaldi prophecy is getting clearer or fuzzier? What do you think about the human tissue in the vial? Is it Rambaldi’s? Are we going to find out that Sydney is a Rambaldi descendent?

There are so many questions piling up to ask. Ask your own too. Let’s talk about it.

wow lenafan

I was waiting for this column
LOL last week I had an answer all typed up and my computer lost power and I believe my post is somehwere in cyber purgatory.

I digress

I think the crack about Jack was mostly intended to show that Lindsay had /has an utter disregard for Sydney and anyone who means anything to Jack.

He does this by threatening and in this case- I think he was accusing Jack of being so good an actor that his feelings for his daughter are not real.

"They held you for two weeks and did not know you were an american- unbelievable"

We know Syd is Jacks' world- but to an outsider it seems that Jack does strange things in the name of love - and he did break a milion and two laws liberating Sydney from custody. He was lying to Lindsay's face.

Intentions be damned technically - Jack was wrong. TECHNICALLY. ( I am so hoping Lindsay is truly dead believe me) Now Lindsay was torotuing Syd so perhaps that throws the rule book out the proverbial window ----

In short while Jack is a very complex character presented to us as two dimensional- lacking emotion and devoid of feeling- he is in fact broiling and desperate- he fears that to lash out will cost him what he values most- his daughters' well being.

Lindsey knows this and like a schoolyard bully- essentially just kept pushing Jacks buttons.

It could be that there is something more that we may find out as the season progresses but that is my take on it for now.

I think Lindsay is/was somehow connected with the covenant or some other illegal activity and that Syd knows. he also just wants to hurt the bristows- perhaps it was irina who murdered his fatehr or borther or wife or someone he cares for.

As for Will and Syd- well I agree with you. Alias would not be an angst filled octane driven ride if the characters didn't do things that pleased and incensed us at every turn.

so some of us were cheering and some booing and some crying
if it keeps us from sitting there feelig like we know what JJ is up to the show would not be any fun.

God only knows where JJ is taking you next- in the latest issue of Alias magazine Victor Garber says to the effect that the cast cannot be pressured into revealing any secrets because they learn what is happening maybe a week or two before the audience does.

my question is
do we have anymore new epy's befeor the new year or will we have to live with re runs until the superbowl

Brenda

AgentGill - December 10, 2003 12:03 AM (GMT)
Not many reruns before the superbowl, please .... I don't think I could take it.

I think Lindsay isn't legitimate .... he might have links to the covenant. Sydney might have something on him that she doesn't remember ... He also dislikes Jack ... we don't know why but I suppose the writers could enlighten us.

I agree with Jack's method. Sydney is hurting ... I know it isn't Vaughn's fault, but Sydney becomes more vulnerable because she loves him. As long as Vaughn is married to Lauren ...... I think Sydney would still hurt to a degree. Getting her involved with Vaughn at this stage would be more painful in my opinion. Just my two cents.

Mole .... for "mom." I have no theories at this time, sorry.

Lazeray might be alive. Whether or not Sark killed his father is debateable ... Sark outwardly expressed no affection for Lazeray due to what he put him through all of those years ago. Sark tortured Lazarey for sure .... If there was some strategy involved ... pragmatically Lazeray would be spared. But with Alias ... you just never know ....

Jack's 1983 capture is very interesting on reflection. Perhaps there is more to Jack that the writers scripted as of now. I'd love it if they would write more into that .... or if they don't I would be disappointed. It would take a good fanfiction to cheer me up ... if they don't persue that idea. That would make an interesting story for anyone to write .... and it wouldn't have to be set in the 1983/2005 years. There could be some events relating to Jack we don't know about.

I don't know if Sydney is related to Rambaldi. I think putting that question forward in addition to the tissue/DNA brought foward at the end of the episode makes the storyline more fuzzier.

LightTraveller - December 12, 2003 11:16 AM (GMT)
wauw lenafan, you're amazing. since I didn't see this episode I know I can always count on you to inform me about it, thanks. beautifully done I must say, can't wait for the next episode. thanks for the pm too.

Colly E. - December 13, 2003 07:30 AM (GMT)
Yeah..sorry it's late lenafan!! :blush01: As you probably know, it's creeping up on finals week and I work at a major sporting goods store...and it's the holidays...you see??
k...that eppy...first off, props for Sydney and Will having at it...but I'm an S/V shipper to heart...so to me Will is always and forever her best friend....but DAMN was he HAWT in that eppy!! And like ya' said, Sydney has needs too, right?? :P
And boy, that whole 1983 thing with Jack has me all  and  cause my daddy was watching with us (he's an Alias freak too, ain't that cute? ) and he was like "whoa.." so yeah, when he does that, it's definitly "whoa..."
And as far as Sydney being a part of the prophecy, I'm still leaning towards that, cause of whatever she holds 'inside her' albiet it being in her mind or elsewhere (the scar, everyone?? what's that things dealio?)
And for the Sark thing...oooo, I believe that boys got baggage, past, history or SOMETHING still comin' to bite us all in the ass, especially Sydney and Co!!! :P
But for sure and always I believe with out a doubt that Sloane is trully evil and just waiting for the other shoe to drop......
And where was Mrs. Vaughn?? I think she was still on that NSC trip from when she left the eppy before this one, I think..
Oh, and Lindsey is where he belongs..in hell I hope! He got what was comin' to him,...but I want to know why he hated Sydney so much too...he wasn't who he said he was either...but time will only tell...
And as for the guess on who is "moms" spy on the inside.....I say..uh, Dixon? I don't know...I just have a feeling that man has a more important role he's playin' than just Director...something important in Sydney's life...*shrug* just a feeling... :blush01:
Um...I think that covers it...oh and I still don't trust Lauren, for some reason and I won't consider Allison dead till they have her body (er, Francie's...er Allison's, whatever..)
K...till next time!! Hopefully sooner than the last two!! :blush01:
Colly E. :bunny:

I always knew he was Russian, back when we first met him. And they were all ‘no he’s English blahblahblah’ but I was right so EAT VODKA!!! Sorry, just had to get that outta my system. As for whether or not Lazerey is actually dead…he hasn’t been dead yet, and it’s been tried many times, or so it seems. I would also like to know why they didn’t analyse his hand to find out if it was cut off pre- or post-mortem. That would have told us if he was definitely dead or not. But I digress.

Whether she is Rambaldi blood or not…I think she may be the one assigned to bring him back from the dead…they have tissue, we have the ability to clone, they have ‘his’ heart, and what is the rambaldi device??? And wasn’t Sloane always going on about a form of immortality???

QUOTE
There are so many questions piling up to ask. Ask your own too. Let’s talk about it.
Okay then, I will. Is it ever going to happen that we see Will again? Will him and Syd work together again? What if Syd falls pregnant? They were way to drunk for thinking about protection? Francie can regenerate, so how can we know if she is really dead? That’s aboyut it, but I have a favour to ask of you…if you find out that they are selling Will’s leather pants on e-bay, won’t you please give me the heads up :D :D :D
