SYDNEY BRISTOW
A Missing Link – Episode 4
“Who The Hell Is Julia”

The new episode opens with Sydney and Jack looking at her laptop on which she has a copy of the tape of her killing Lazarey. She goes over and over it and tells Jack that Lazarey is saying “Julia.” Jack finally slams the top down and tells her to stop punishing herself over something she obviously had no control. When he was in solitary, he kept his focus because of her strength. He doesn’t want her to lose it now. Sydney receives a call from Lauren asking her to come to the center.

There she learns that a gang has stolen some Ebola virus from a French lab, but that one of the men in the gang was exposed to the virus. His name is Lazlo Bogdon and he was in the high-level security business. He is dying so the French turned him over to the US NSC. He is at Stafford Naval Hospital and Lauren wants Sydney to accompany her.

“Why me?”
“Because Michael says you’re the best.” (We all knew that!)

They go to the hospital where Bogdon is dying. Lauren tries first, but he rejects her plea. Then Sydney takes over reminding him of the afterlife and possible consequences if he doesn’t help when he can. There is no one to help him, but himself.

“I never knew the man who hired us,” he whispers, “I cannot help you stop the second job.”

Briefing at the CIA: Jack, Sydney, Lauren, Vaughn, Weiss and Marshall with Dixon leading. They discuss the interview with Bogdon. Sydney says Ebola is a #4 with the highest rating. Marshall says they probably mean to mix the virus with something, possibly to make it airborne. (Like Peanut butter and chocolate). Dixon tells Sydney she is going to be the new security expert and present herself to Walker as such. They will give her a tracking device to put on whatever they steal so it will lead the CIA back to the Covenant. Dixon tells Lauren to see Sloane and see if he can find out from any of his contacts what the Covenant is planning to use it for.

There is a brief scene between Lauren and Vaughn: an argument. Why it was put there is a puzzle because it added nothing to the story, other than two people arguing.

On the plane, Sydney is doing some reading when Vaughn comes over. He tells Sydney that they can only use a laser mike to monitor her with: he’ll be able to hear her, but she can’t hear him. He hands her a lipstick in which Marshall put a miniature transmitter. She’s to take it and put it on whatever the gang steals. She looks at the lipstick saying, “Peach isn’t really in this year.” They banter back and forth until they realize their situation has changed. Cool.

Sydney swaggers into the hotel in Sevilla. We are treated with music and dancing in the flamenco style. (Love the music, ole!) Sydney heads upstairs to a private party supposedly hosted by Walker. Guard stops her and turns her away, but then gets a call and allows her upstairs. Simon Walker greets her with a kiss, saying:

“Good to see you again, Julia.”
She responds, just slightly disconcerted, “Good to see you too!”
Downstairs, Weiss looks at Vaughn, “Who the hell is Julia?”
“Hell if I know,” says Vaughn.
Weiss responds, “It’s not an alias she’s never used with us before…”
“There was no mention of a Julia in her SD-6 files…

Okay so now another little piece in the gigantic puzzle of the missing two years is in place. Sydney was right; Lazarey did say the name as he was dying. So, Sydney tells Walker she heard about Bogdon and wants to take his place.

Walker says, “What no future in murder?”
“I’m a girl with many talents.”

Now I’m beginning to think Julia/Sydney was either a hit man for the Covenant or an assassin. (Now does this sound familial in some way? Think Irina. Oh come now, you didn’t think I was going to stray too far from my favorite Mom.)

The scene switches to Lauren who is talking with slimy, snarky Sloane. She wants him to find out what the Covenant is going to do with the two viruses. He in turns needles her telling her that Sydney and Vaughn had a relationship as he and his late wife did, but evidently, he was wrong. Smack him! Then he further goes on to tell her not to doubt herself because she’s very good at what she does despite the way she got the job.
Kick his shins! I never trusted him and his Omifam organization. He’s the chief villain here.

Now Sydney is introduced to the rest of the gang. Simon asks if she is ready and they leave the hotel. Sydney walks by Vaughn and Weiss and we note Simon has his hand on her right buttocks in a proprietary manner. In the gang’s Hummer (Newest favorite car of spies and gangs and crooks.) Walker tells Sydney that the Princess Dimitri is in town with her 150-carat diamond necklace. “You want me to steal it.” She states as one gang member dials the police telling them there is a robbery taking place at the Sevilla Hotel. She now has seven minutes to complete the assignment.

Inside the hotel, having stolen a maid’s uniform, she carries towels up to the penthouse. The guard refuses to let her go inside. She shoots him with the tranc gun that Walker gave her. (I thought only the CIA was careful not to kill…well I guess Simon didn’t want to lose Julia.) So, inside she locates the safe in the bedroom where the Princess is sleeping. Using the speaker mic in the phone, she opens the safe just as the Princess wakes up. She pops her with another tranc, “Sorry.” The police arrive. Taking off her uniform, she does a high dive into the pool several stories below. Wearing a robe, she slips back into the Hummer with the boys, wearing the necklace around her ankle. That was quite a stunt and only Sydney would have done it. She can improvise better than anyone else. Of course, her success makes Simon happy and he welcomes her to the team.

On the plane back to the U.S., Sydney tells Vaughn the name of the safe she needs to crack. He says Marshall can probably come up with the necessary equipment. “No one can improvise better than you can.” She knows that he still thinks it’s too dangerous for her to continue. He wants to know about Julia because when Simon called her that she wasn’t surprised. “We’re not where we were.” She won’t tell him anything about Julia because of the responsibilities he now has requires her to remain silent. He wants to know is it because Lauren and the NSC. She tells him she’s not punishing him. They are silent and Weiss joins them, looking at both, saying, “Somebody die?”

At the same time, Javier gives Simon an envelope with pictures inside stating they have a problem. “Julia.”

Back in LA, Jack and Sydney are talking about the situation. She still believes she should have told the CIA. The painful procedures couldn’t be worse than not knowing what has happened to her. “Yes, you can.” Jack’s response kind of lets you think that he, at one time, had been put through something as terrible.

Marshall shows Sydney the equipment he’s making for her. Carrie is there, quite pregnant. She explains that the safe cracking element is like an x-ray and ultrasound in one. Marshall wants to use it on her to find the sex of the baby. Dixon’s secretary enters and asks Sydney to go to Dixon’s office. Carrie tells Marshall “touch me and you die.”

In the office Dixon and Jack face Sydney and Vaughn who was also asked to join them. Dixon tells Sydney that Jack showed him the tape where she murdered Lazarey. Vaughn is shocked. Sydney looks at her father in surprise. Dixon goes on to tell them that he thinks Sydney wasn’t responsible and until they find out, she is going to be sent back into the gang. He tells Vaughn that he is not to tell Lauren anything about this meeting. Vaughn now realizes why Sydney wouldn’t tell him about “Julia.”

Sydney tells her father she was shocked that he revealed the tape to Dixon. She thought he wanted it stay a secret. Jack says it was to be a secret from the NSC and now Dixon has placed Vaughn in a position that he cannot tell Lauren. Sydney says, “I don’t like being the one to drive a wedge between Vaughn and Lauren.” Jack responds, “That doesn’t concern me.”

Back in Pamplona, Simon draws the pictures out the envelope and sees Vaughn and Sydney together. Javier says she’s not to be trusted.”

Sydney is being flown back to Spain to meet Walker. She tells Vaughn she’ll talk to him later. In Walker’s bedroom, after some warm kissing, Syd asks what he thought when he first met her. He tells her he remembers her when they first met in Algeria, but somehow it looks like he would trick her. I’m sure he doesn’t suspect she’s a clone or a double, so he continues,

“I said to myself, there is a very beautiful woman who knows how to deceive.”

He throws her down on the bed with a knife at her throat. Simon demands to know whom she is working for and who the man with her is. She tells him Michael Vaughn, her security supplier. That he safe she has to crack was made in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Vaughn and Weiss hear this and quickly contact Marshall who, with Carrie’s help, set up an identity for Vaughn verifying Sydney’s statement.

Minutes later she and Simon enter the downstairs dining room where Javier and the other man wait. “She’s good.” Simon tells them and begins to outline the job when he interrupted by a phone call. Sark enters the room shortly after, telling Simon the time line has to be moved up. Sydney, keeping her back to him, goes to Javier to ask if she can study the plans, but all he can say is “I know you’re hiding something.” Sark leaves.

Lauren is once again in Sloane’s office. He tells her that the gang is going to steal an artificial pathogen, which combined with the Ebola virus, which will be used to genetically tailor a biological weapon for specific targets. Then he apologizes for the remark he made earlier about how she got the job. He meant to tell her that her father, the Senator, knew she wanted to be field rated. He thought it too dangerous, but then Arvin smiles as he says,

“But then you knew that.”
Lauren stares at him, “I know how you manipulate people. Don’t do it to me.”

***(Colly E. suggested that JJ was possibly make the Senator bad and his daughter follow too. I got to thinking about something Sydney said from last season's Salvation episode. She told Senator Douglas that the family (Jack, Irina and herself) were working to prove that a Senator was taking money from The Aliiance. She did this to free her mother and father. We never got a follow-up then, but now...could this be a possibility? Sure could. Think about it.)

Simon’s gang gains entrance to the laboratory. Sydney is now the main man…she has to open the safe within a time frame. She makes it with a second or two to spare. Javier has just told them all that “I knew we couldn’t rely on her.” They take the pathogen, put it in ice and leave with two minutes to spare before the lab security arrive.

Down a road, the truck stops as a jeep come up the hill carrying some members of the gang she doesn’t know and Vaughn who is in handcuffs. Julia and Simon are told he was found in a truck near the facility. They say he is with the CIA. Julia/Sydney says she only knows him as her supplier. Simon is about to kill him, but Julia/Sydney demands that she be allowed to do it. She pulls a knife (switchblade) from Javier’s hand and turns to Vaughn.

“You never should have betrayed me.” She says, stabbing Vaughn in an upward thrust to his left abdomen. Simon kicks him down the hill and he comes to rest, not moving.

Whoa, nice going JJ and team. You’ve left us with something to think about, seriously! JJ is so devious. It makes us crazy sometimes.

“You never should have betrayed me!”
I thought about using that to head up the episode, but then, basically, this one was about “Julia” and some of Sydney’s missing years. She told Vaughn what she felt about his getting married. It just seemed like another way of putting it, at least I think the Alias fans will probably think so. Of course, you all realize Vaughn is not dead. Sydney made sure she was the one who did the “killing.” The method and the placement of the thrust assured Vaughn that he would live. The blade was about four inches max, if that and narrow. It might have nicked the intestine somewhat, but he won’t have a serious injury. Wait till Lauren finds out! Oops! Oh boy!

Here’s another thought. How are they going to find him at the bottom of that hill/canyon? Remember earlier she had removed the transmitter from the lipstick. She might have dropped it in his pocket as she struck him with the knife. This is speculation only but there is the possibility.

A couple of questions:
Before Sydney joined Walker, was she a hit man or assassin working for who? Just give it your best shot.
If Sydney didn’t leave the transmitter in Vaughn’s pocket, how and by whom will he be found?

Next week Lauren and Sydney to the rescue of Sloane?

Okay!! :::cracks fingers simutanously::: (yeah, can't spell worth a hoot!)
This is MY thoughts!!!! :P
Me thinks that yes, Sydney was sort of 'getting back' or in that sense when she said "You shouldn't have betrayed me" bit, but it might have been subconciously, cause we all know that Sydney would never intentionally hurt the Vaughnster. It's like, against everything she believed in. :innocent:
Now, with the 'Julia' bit. :ph43r: Yeah, me thinks she was an assassin for the Covenent, like you've speculated also lenafan, but that she was doing it either under hypnosis/a-la-brainwash OR under duress, cause something she holds VERY dear and loves soully *coughvaughncough* was threatened and so she did what they asked.
OKAY!! Now more of what me thinks on dear Mrs. Vaughn!!! I, along with my fellow Alias freaks here in mi casa (my sis and pa) think that 'Lauren' is working for the Covenent, and that this said 'daddy' of hers is someone VERY high up in the baddy guy world, like Irina was with 'The Man'. That's why Sloane said those things to her. ALSO, that would explain why the name Lauren is so close to Laura, as in Lauren is renacting what the infamous Irina Derevko had done, only using her own daughter's soul mate in the process. Not to mention who's father she also supposedly killed. (Yeah, won't believe that till Irina straight out admits she killed William. I think something is still up with THAT!) :innocent:
So, those are me thoughts on the new episode. :)
See you all next week!! :hi211:

Irina did admit she killed Bill Vaughn (She said that to V when she helped Sydney out of Fapsi headquarters in, I think, Dead Drop. "So how do you thank the woman who killed your father?" However, what were the circumstances? Notice she said killed not murdered.
I don't think JJ is going to do the same thing to V. as he did to J. If anything, Lauren may be killed at the end of the season. :(
Of course, we have all these wonderful ideas about what's going to happen, but JJ always manages to kick the box from under our feet and there we are, hanging, hoisted by our own petard.

B)

I have edited my column because I was thinking about this possibility. You've probably seen it by now. Has to do with last seasons Salvation episode.

brenda_wood - October 21, 2003 08:51 PM (GMT)
my two cents

the argument was a a powerpaly btw vaughn and lauren

lauren is prim and proper and procedural- she doesn't like that vaughn still hand s in things reports etc - like he did when he and syd were a team- remember how they left stuff out of that debrief during the epiosde when they had dinner? 9was that rome or paris)

Lauren may or may not have some or all of that backstory but she is intelligent and feels threatend by the ghost of the relationship vaughn had with Syd has with syd

I think Lauren is a good guy- just nervous and wanting to prove herslef.

in slavation you will recall that sydney made up the bit about a senator beign in the alliances pocket- so unless Syd made up the truth or JJ is hoping we forgot about that I think reed is just a spoiled rich girl trying to compete with sydney.

For now anyhow

I think sydney palnted the tracker on vaughn and he will be exttracted and sydney will be deep cover and on her own til she gets home

I think Jack will be furious with her but proud - maybe he'll even tell her how amazing she is. or not.
vaughn will sruvive just fine and I think Syd and lauren will have to work together for a while and it will do both of them some good.

But that's how sneaky JJ can be. He let it drop after that episode. We heard nothing more altho I was not the only one who remembered. I would have thot the Senator would have been after them to give him some information which they never did.

I think Lauren's going to learn soon just how tough that's going to be: competing with Sydney. In fact if I read the promo's right...next episode.

why the hell did I not post a response before, sorry, I don't know what happened. but I must say the column is great as always, and syd's attitude towards Vuaghn really showed itself. But I still kinda hope he's okay, I mean I know he's not gonna die but still. By the way I completely loved Sloane almost making Lauren cry, loved it!!!
i'm looking foward to the next column and episode already.

no she didn't cry, but almost and I would've loved to see that. I don't like Lauren.

Why it was put there is a puzzle because it added nothing to the story, other than two people arguing.[/QUOTE] I agree - it was kind of pointless, but I just looked at it as the way for the writers to tell us that all is not well between Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn. I don't read spoilers, so this is just speculation, but maybe they're hinting at something like a breakup between them? Or, at least, some tension and more insanity in the "triangle".

Exactly what I was thinking. Even thought I somehow find a way to relate everything to Irina . . . no, I'm not obsessed, not at all! :D Since this season started, I've even been remarking how (in my mind, at least) Sydney just looks so much like Irina. I'm not sure what it is exactly. . . I might just be making this up!

I agree! *whack*

That's the same thought I had - that he had been through something like that. I'm dying to hear more about Jack and general (now, how could we relate that to Irina? hmmm . . .).

Hmm, interesting point you brought up about the senator in "Salvation" and Lauren's father. I think his name was Douglas (????) so I guess he's probably not her father (although anything is possible) but I was actually thinking about that myself after I saw this episode. It just seems like there could really be a connection there, and I've pretty much found that there are no coicidences on Alias. Interesting to see how this develops . . . (only 3 hours til the next episode!).

Great column! Thanks for letting me blab on about my thoughts here! Thanks for the PMs!

Heya LF ...another great column (as usual ;) ) So here is my 5c worth (or less depending) on everything you wrote (:

QUOTE
"Who The Hell Is Julia"
Okay, you know me...already I have something to say...and I have to agree with this...I saw them talking about it in the beginning watching the Lazarey video/mpeg, and it's funny how soon JJ actually gave us some clue as to who the hell Julia is...anyways, that's my title analysis (I have waaaaaay to much to say!) {highlight for post 3.04 spoiler} actually, having read the titles of some topics on AA, I thought that maybe he was saying Julian, like (aparently) is Mr. Sarks name...I'm not sure cuz I didn't check it out, so I won't confirm or deny anything...but Julia and Julian...hmmm...some twisted parents idea of naming their kids funny?

QUOTE
. When he was in solitary, he kept his focus because of her strength. He doesn't want her to lose it now.
*sigh* such a moving Syd&Jack moment...he really did miss her in S.C. and he has rethought his take on life...*sigh*Jaaaaack*sigh*

QUOTE
"Why me?"
"Because Michael says you're the best."
Okay, I have to mention something...what went through (almost) ever Alias watcher's mind at that point? "Like...duh!" But let's look at the other side of the coin...Lauren wants Sydney involved, simply because Vaughn suggested it...I mean, it doesn't seem as if she even considered not signing Syd up for the job. And if I were in her shoes, I certainly don't think I'd be asking my new husband's "dead" ex-lover along for any rides, no matter how professional the 'ride' would be. So this leads in a few directions:
1) Is Lauren trying to make Syd feel welcome at CIA again (which, after the S/L episode at the last briefing, is unlikely).
2) Make Syd think that she can trust Lauren, because she wants to be close when Syd (hopefully, if ever) regains her memory, that way she'll know what happens as it happens.
3)Lauren is actually a really good person, and completely disregards all history and tries to judge people on their merit and all of that BS which is soooooo unlikely, I thought I'd mention it only in passing.
4) It's actually a V/L thing. 'She's trying to gain Vaughns trust, for either of two reasons:
a ) They were only married recently, and they still have the
whole newlywed thing going on.
b ) There is some reason that she needs to keep Vaughn close
to her, because he knows/will be useful for something which is
going on...

QUOTE
They go to the hospital where Bogdon is dying. Lauren tries first, but he rejects her plea. Then Sydney takes over reminding him of the afterlife and possible consequences if he doesn't help when he can. There is no one to help him, but himself.

QUOTE
There is a brief scene between Lauren and Vaughn: an argument. Why it was put there is a puzzle because it added nothing to the story, other than two people arguing.
Actually, I think it served quite a purpose! This fight forced everyone to see something, which I don't think that they realised...first and foremost, they were arguing. About what? About nothing. What they were arguing about was trivial, it didn't matter. They were arguing. This was JJ showing us that the couple aren't perfect. They don't exist together in perfect harmony all the time. They don't agree on everything. They have different ways of doing things. They are different, and they fight about. Professional or not. Next...they make-up, and make-out. (and seriously JJ, enough with the PDA already! The office is a PROFESSIONAL place. If you want to go and snog or shag a co-worker, do it on your own time, or at least in the bathroom where nobody can see you!). Anyhow...they make-up. Somebody admits they were wrong (Vaughn this time  ) and they get over it...but they are not breaking up and stroming out...they are working it out, and if they can work everything out, they are a few steps ahead of most of us. Maybe it really is true love. We can see that they love eachother to some degree, because they overame the obstacle. Now from a Vaughn point of view...he agrees Lauren must be right, he'll do whatever blah blah blah...basically, this Blonde Brtish Brat has got poor little Vaughney whippedSomebody is wearing pants, it ain't Vaughn, and he ain't Scottish! Also...going back to the PDA thing...maybe there is a lack of professionalism, maybe one of them (read 'Lauren') is good in bed, and they can't keep their hands off of eachother. They could be newlyweds, we don't know yet. Or, they (or one of them) are trying to convince everyone else (or at least somebody else) that they are a couple, that they love eachother, blah blah blah. LR isn't even pregnant yet...look at Carrie and Marshall...they don't go down on eachother while he's doing op-tech? And I've written waaaaaaaay to much...but to put it short: I don't think the fight is insignificant by any means!

I don't know if you watch Smallville, but this is very much like Lex Luthor from the show, and let me point out some more similarities:
1) They both make sleazy comments like total pricks. If they get slapped, they know they deserve it, and are unphased. Same with having knives and guns pulled on them.
2) They are both, currently, good. Tormented souls with evil things in the past, but nothing bad for now.
3) They both go bad. Superman and who? Lex...the arch-nemesis of superman, or Spy Family in Sloane's case. And I know that we aren't told Sloane is going to go bad, but let's be serious here...he was so evil for so long, and all of a sudden some random machine regurgitates 'Peace' and he's reformed? Uh...no. I agree with Jack on this one. (Hell, maybe the message meant 'piece' as if he had only put together part of the damn thing. Who knows.)
But just a similarity I thought of :)

I think all the men in ALIAS run around the show without pants the whole time! All the women wear the pants, and the men are left with nothing!!!

Sydney says, "I don't like being the one to drive a wedge between Vaughn and Lauren." Jack responds, "That doesn't concern me."
*laughs out loud for so loud and so long that the shrinks up the tranqulizers* HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! SUCK EGGS LETTUCE BOY!!!!!!!

Ummm...'the' otherwise it's like he's the safe she has to crack, and that's just a bit too much S&M for my tastes ;)

"I know you're hiding something."
She's a frickin assassin for crying out loud! She's hiding a bit more than 'something' from more people than just them! Hello, it's the underworld pal, peple have secrets.

I understood that it was for a large target, weren't they making it airborn? and I think there are to many witches in there ;)

QUOTE
"You never should have betrayed me." She says, stabbing Vaughn in an upward thrust to his left abdomen.
You know, I think she enjoyed that to some degree...it must feel good to get all that anger and resentment out in one blow with an excuse and some cover :) Ahhh Syd, what would we do without you?

. It might have nicked the intestine somewhat, but he won't have a serious injury. Wait till Lauren finds out! Oops! Oh boy!
Of course, if they just leave him lying in the ditch for a bit, then he would die :reallyexcited: I don't think Lauren will understand, regardless of what sort of deep cover they were in!

QUOTE
Here's another thought. How are they going to find him at the bottom of that hill/canyon? Remember earlier she had removed the transmitter from the lipstick. She might have dropped it in his pocket as she struck him with the knife. This is speculation only but there is the possibility.
Okay, or she left the trans. with the pathogen, remembers exactly where they are, she is extracted, her and Weiss go and pick him up. The alternative (and my favourite) is that they don't find him at the bottom of the canyon. Boo-hoo. Then the S/V shippers would think that he's only going to be missing for 2 years. They'll never get over the S/V thing will they. Now Syd can marry Lauren, and it can be a really twisted love triangle! Sorry to throw my slash in there...I'll shut up now. :D

QUOTE
Before Sydney joined Walker, was she a hit man or assassin working for who? Just give it your best shot.
If Sydney didn't leave the transmitter in Vaughn's pocket, how and by whom will he be found?
I've already answered these, but in case my answers got lost in all the other blab, I think 'assassin' and I hope they don't find him, but she'll probably remember where it is, she'll get extracted soon, tell Weiss and they'll get him out via chopper.

Now I have a question...when does Will make his appearance? I want to start a countdown  :reallyexcited:

PS: I think I may have written almost as much as you did!!! If you don't read it all, I'm not offended, I don't read it all!

What a review...I'm in my chair laughing, chuckling and snickering. You are funny, funny. Thanks for catching the boo-boos, but too late to fix. You are probably the last reader here.

And if I were in her shoes, I certainly don't think I'd be asking my new husband's "dead" ex-lover along for any rides, no matter how professional the 'ride' would be. So this leads in a few directions:

You got one of them right... :D

When I get rich I'm going to forge you some papers and have you deported to Spain...hehehehehehehe

Thank you. I'd appreciate that. Been there but love it almost as much as Italy.

For you edification...familial means (1) of pertaining to, involving or associated with the family. And thank you for not mentioning the typo. Here it's favorite. BTW its find not fing his muse. :D :D :D
