Title: IRINA DEREVKO alias LAURA CAIN
Description: THE FBI FILES (1972)

lenafan - August 6, 2003 04:27 AM (GMT)
I posted the KGB file on the training of Irina Derevko. Here is the file that was put together by the FBI when Jack Bristow told his employers, the CIA, that he was planning to marry Laura Cain. The FBI had control over this sequence as the CIA operated only outside the US. Consequently, it was the CIA who requested the FBI to investigate Laura Cain. They would have said nothing to Jack about this investigation unless something odd turned up.
Sydney wants to know more about her Mother and the days she was married to Jack. This is first of two files.
Enjoy. Feedback please.
As always, the characters belong to JJ Abrams and his cadre of writers.

THE FBI FILES

Los Angeles
Sydney was sitting at her desk at the U.S. Intelligence Joint Task Force Center when her father approached. He had file in his hand. He dropped it onto the desk. She looked up. He did not have a happy expression on his face.
“Here’s your mother’s file.”
“Dad!” She looked down at the folder. “Sorry! I didn’t think they would have you bring it.”
“Sydney, you know I don’t approve of all this looking into your mother’s background while she was living here. Does she know?”
She shook her head. “No, but Dad, I have to know.”
“And I suppose you’ll find a way to get the CIA files?” His voice was cold, almost distant now.
She stood up and threw her arms around him. Jack was momentarily startled and shaken by her show of warmth. He knew he loved her so much, but could not understand why she had to know more about a woman who had abandoned her when she was six. Irina had become a magnet for Sydney; she was mysterious, enigmatic and controlling. He felt that every time he saw her she was in control of the situation, not the CIA. What was worse, Sydney was continually drawn to her, visiting her almost everyday when she wasn’t on an assignment.
He kissed her on the cheek. “I’ll leave you to your reading.”
Sydney sat down and opened the file folder to the first report.

LAURA CAIN

October 23, 1972

Reason: Subject is engaged to marry a CIA agent

Subject: Laura Cain (NMI)
DOB: March 22, 1951
Place of Birth: Farrisville, N. H.
Height: Six feet
Weight: 130
Eyes Brown
Hair Brown
Parents: Peter and Maria Cain
IQ 170
School K thru 12 in Farrisville, N. H.
College William’s College, Williamsburg, PA
College degree awarded June 1969
On October 24, 1972 I traveled for Farrisville, New Hampshire to do a routine background check on he above subject, Laura Cain.
I arrived in Farrisville to find it a nearly deserted town. According to statistics, there are about 200 people still living here. Most of the stores are closed or boarded up. I interviewed the following people.
Sheriff Sharon Jones
I found the Sheriff in her office near the crossroads. She was hospitable and gregarious. I learned that Laura Cain had not returned to Farrisville since her parents died suddenly about two years ago. She returned then only to see to their burial. The house was not sold, because no one would want to buy it. “The town is dying,” the Sheriff said rather philosophically I thought. Evidently the only thing that had kept the town was the mill, but it had closed nearly two years ago, throwing everyone out of a job. Consequently the mill’s employees and their families moved away.
I asked her if she knew Laura Cain. She said she just vaguely remembers a very tall girl, but she never knew her to speak to her. She checked her files. There was nothing on the young woman. She had no arrest records, nor was she linked to any juvenile problems.
I concluded that Laura Cain had no priors or arrests. A further check of the state police files revealed no arrests or priors.

Principal Andy Henderson
I located him in a two-room school on the outskirts of town. The school itself looked in need of repair. He informed me this was his last year as principal and teacher. At this time he has only 25 students. Next year, they would all be bused to the next town to go to school and he would be looking for a new job.
I then asked him if he knew Laura Cain. He shook his head. He had been at the school only the last three years. Laura Cain had graduated a full year before he arrived. However, he did, quite generously, offer to locate any old records on her. I waited in his office until he returned with a couple of file boxes. Assisting him in the search, we finally located a copy of her school records. They were excellent grade wise.
He looked at the records, then fished around in the file some, and finally pulling out papers stapled together. “You know she tested at 170 on her IQ test. Here are the papers and results from the state. She actually graduated from here at the age of 16.” He glanced at the records.” She got a full scholarship to William’s College in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania.
“Then you did know her?”
“No, just heard what everyone was saying about how intelligent she was.” Beyond that he had nothing else to add.

Frank Connerly, Gas Station Manger
Mr. Henderson referred me to see Frank as he was in the same class as Laura back in 1966. I found him at his station working on a car.
His recollection of Laura Cain was a little fuzzy, except that she was a tall girl and had pleasant features. He didn’t seem to know more than that. He didn’t date her nor could he remember any boy who had, but not one of them still lived here.

William’s College, PA
Two days later I traveled to William’s, PAA for interviews with the Dean of the College and the Registrar. Both of these men could not remember Laura Cain as being one of their outstanding students. However, when we pulled her file, we found her grades to be high and that she graduated at the age of 19 with a 4.0 average. Her teachers and professors could not add any more information. She did not join any sororities or national student groups. She simply went about the business of earning her degree. Her goal, I did learn, was to teach English Literature at the College or University level.

Colton College, Franklyn, Virginia
Laura Cain applied for a teaching position on July 20th at the above-College and was hired. This is a small college that is known for its degrees in Arts and Letters. Laura’s youth did no hinder her from getting the position. She has been teaching here since September of 1972.

FINAL COMMENT
All the records are straight forward and easily available. Laura Cain seems to be someone no one can remember too well. She was liked, never caused any trouble and moved only to go to school and on to her present job.
She has no priors, arrests or convictions.
She has no living relatives and no siblings

Agent 50-8789

Attachments: School (K thru 12) records of Laura Cain from the Farrisville Unified School District and William’s College, Williamsburg, Pennsylvania
Employment application she filled out for Colton College, Franklyn, Virginia.

Sydney sat looking the file. The KGB had done a masterful job at giving her mother a life in the United States. It was squeaky clean and so bland. She read it again. Other than the fact her mother had tested for a high IQ, there was nothing that stood out to warn the FBI or CIA that Laura Cain was anything other than what the report said she was. She wondered what happened to Fred C. Wilson when the truth was discovered.
Her pager went off. She looked down and saw she was being paged by SD-6. She threw the file into her drawer and locked it. There was more to read. It was the investigation of Laura Cain Bristow in connection with the deaths of the 12 CIA agents and the spying she did for the KGB.

I hope you have enjoyed this. B)
