Title: UN-resolution 'Definition of Marriage'
Description: For or Against?

Ancient Races - November 22, 2004 03:40 PM (GMT)
The Ancient One (Paul) supports UN-resolution 'Definition of Marriage'.
What's your opinion?

Principality of Perejaslawl - November 22, 2004 05:38 PM (GMT)
Perejaslawl votes AGAINST this resolution, for two reasons.

First, the concept of marriage is purely a cultural (or religious) one, and is not to be defined in any way by any governing bodies. Defining it according to the culture the country - which in our case is a heterosexual monogamous relationship - would violate the rights of minorities, and defining it too broad would be an insult to many people with traditionalist views. For this reason, in our country, government officials register only civil unions, and marriage is handled completely by private religious organizations.

The second objection is that this definition only descripes a relationship between two individuals, and does not provide equal right for polygamous and polyandrous relationships.

International Terrans - November 23, 2004 01:51 AM (GMT)
We vote AGAINST this measure, because it is up to a nation to decide it's own definition: not the U.N. We don't fundamentally oppose the contents on any level, but view this as an intrusion into national soverigenty.

Katja of Zahumlje - November 23, 2004 10:40 PM (GMT)
We are AGAINST Zahumlje is a multi-ethnic, multi cultural multi religious Nation and the very idea of defining marriage in some standard way is not something we in Zahumlje will tolerate. We will fight for repeal if this law is passed as it is an intolerable infringement on National Sovereignty.

Thracia - November 24, 2004 11:11 AM (GMT)
We would also to remind the UN members that the current resolution talks about allowing inter-species marriages.

In our country this is called bestiality.

Principality of Perejaslawl - November 24, 2004 06:05 PM (GMT)
As long as all parties are consenting, we don't see any problem with inter-species civil unions.

Principality of Perejaslawl - November 24, 2004 06:41 PM (GMT)
On a side note, if this resolution is passed (and it seems it will), we think we will be able to dodge it. Since it does not grant any specific rights and/or obligations to the parties of the marriage, and our law only regulates civil unions, as long as we don't explicitly ban marriage of any sort (which we don't), we comply.

Ramostan - November 24, 2004 09:33 PM (GMT)
We are against this resolution. In ruling our nation, we must juggle the views and religious stances of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Historically we have done very well. We have not accomplished this by trying to legislate culture and religion. We have managed this by staying out. We leave the defining of marriage to the individual and their religion. We, the state, cannot open the door to devisiveness. Let every nation deal with this as they see fit. As for Ramostan, we say no. If necessary, we will fight for repeal.

Said al-Andalusi,
President of the Holy Republic of Ramostan

Ramostan - November 25, 2004 05:16 AM (GMT)
I am very impressed with the organization and good will that separates the Balkans from the other regions, however, I do have a question. Is the decision on which way to vote, utltimately in the hands of the U.N. delegate, or do the members of the region vote to decide how the official U.N. vote will be cast? Just wondering

President al-Andalusi

The Kingdom of Slavpo - November 25, 2004 02:39 PM (GMT)
The United Nations has gone too far. Although Slavpo believes in idea of the UN this recent proposal has raised serious questions about the organisation's contemporary place in our nation and the world.

Principality of Perejaslawl - November 26, 2004 12:12 AM (GMT)
Now that the resolution was passed, some counteraction should be expected. Perejaslawl will not initiate it, as we are not affected by this resolution (see above for reasons), but if some nation will initiate a repeal process, we will fully support it.

Ramostan - November 26, 2004 01:55 AM (GMT)
My ministers are at present studying the repeal process. We fought long an hard to be recognized by the U.N., we believe it could serve as an instrument of peace in this world. However, having our sovereignty attacked is not what we had in mind. It has been an arduous task to keep religious extremist elements at bay in my government. This undermines my work. Some of our citizens practice poligamy, they will see this as a direct attack on their way of life.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage other U.N. members in the Balkans to join me in planning for a repeal. We must speak now.

Please contact me if you would like to pursue this. I must go and field calls now. I had no idea so many bishops, imams, and rabbis carried cell phones!

Ramostan - November 26, 2004 02:38 AM (GMT)
Dear U.N. delegate from the Ancient Races,

Will you initiate a repeal, or should we do it on our own?

International Terrans - November 26, 2004 02:50 AM (GMT)
A repeal has already been begun. I trust Ancient Races will support it, in light of the decision in this thread on its contents?

Principality of Perejaslawl - November 27, 2004 03:58 AM (GMT)
On a side note, due to the position of the Ancient Races UN delegate on this issue, we hereby withdraw our endorsement from them, and urge all other nations who disagree with this resolution to do the same. We will reconsider our position, however, if (and when) Ancient Races will support the repeal of this resolution.

Ramostan - November 27, 2004 07:34 AM (GMT)
We shall follow suit and repeal our endorsement.

President al-Andalusi

**Breaking News...RNA**11.29.04

In international news President al-Andalusi adressed the Assembly of the People concerning the recent U.N. debacle.

"It is with great regret that I inform you that the Holy Republic of Ramostan is renouncing its U.N. membership. Although it was our vision to fight hand in hand with other nations of the world to battle world hunger, disease and pestilence, and to assisst in peacekeeping, we no longer see it possible to participate in an organization with such little respect for Ramostani culture, heritage, and tradition. We have fought to have our voice heard in the U.N., but have only found tyrannical beasts armed with overzealous pens and the desire to rule. Since we are not a regional delegate, we have taken this as far as we can. It is the world's loss.
