Title: global warming?
Description: seriously -_-

(i'll try to use better-than-average-grammer for this thread..not perfect)
Seriosuly, who here thinks global warming is true? lets see...its like what June 6th..AND I AM STILL WARING LONG JEANS!!!!!
i ONLY whore shorts 3 TIMES..and that was MID MAY!
and this whole week will be BELOW 80 degree's. (I live in michigan..lower)
and about this time EVERY summer..i would be swimming, exept the water is like 70-75 degrees. wich is QUITE low!
so it makes me wounder...are the scientists and crazy white trash red necks (just kidding) wrong?
P.S> also i think the reason the tempeture shifts is because the earth is wobbling...wich caused the ice age (theory) as well as the mini ice age durring the....can't remember when (about 1500-1800's time)
BP9 - June 6, 2004 08:04 PM (GMT)
No, and i say this cause there is no solid proof, a couple summers in a row it got hotter than usual and all the scientists are like GLOBAL WARMING THE ICE CAPS WILL MELT AND DROWN US ALL.
Right now i live in the middle of the US (Nebraska) and it usually gets really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter but it went from being really cold to..like only about 70's.
I mean i have a pool but i have only used it twice since i've been out. But it does seem like its actually starting to pick up for summer i mean we hit a full 82 degrees! The like last three saturdays but then it went down to like 70 (maybe thats whats causing the tornadoes) still i think scientists spoke too soon.

I don't believe in it, the planet naturally cools down and warms up. Its been happening before we were here and will be happening after we're all gone.
BP9 - June 8, 2004 04:27 AM (GMT)
Just today i heard someone like omg global warming it'll be 92 tommarow (first of all this is only the second time we have broke 90 this year) i was like ITS JUNE
Hugh Laurie - June 8, 2004 06:32 AM (GMT)
Er... I do believe this has already been proven? (I could have misheard.) Or at least evidence says so and I think it's true.
First of all. Honestly, you can't base that global warming isn't true because you're not wearing shorts today or yesterday. <_< That's really faulty logic redeye.
Global warming doesn't happen overnight like in the movie The Day After Tomorrow. Instant ice age and all that. As was said in the film, it can happen 50 years from now or so but something terrible happened and the next day it was snowing in India. That I believe is the current findings.
But basically, it's occuring at this gradually and yes it is really getting warmer. Maybe not for you but other countries like places near the Equator or was it the near the north pole? (I'm sorry, I forgot which is which. I took this up like 2 years ago)
As we all probably know, there's a hole in the ozone layer. You know.. the thing that protects us from the sun's harmful rays? Yes, that one. What caused it? Us. ;) In this
site, it is said that there is an increase in certain gasses responsible in that hole. And so, global warming.
I'll continue this later or something...

Unfortunately Elza...there is no substantial proof that the ozone layer has been damaged due to the gasses...lets put it this way...
The main cause of global warming is said to be Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide and other gas emmissions from cars and factories...unfortunately, Carbon Dioxide makes up 0.01% of all gasses in the atmosphere, and Carbon Monoxide is too heavy to reach anywhere near the ozone layer...for those of you unfamiliar with the atomic structure of Ozone, its made up of 3 oxygen atoms...this means that the only thing stopping ozone forming is a lack of oxygen...and as both of the 'criminal' gasses are heavier than oxygen, which can be proven via a simple lab experiment, obviously there is no lack of oxygen up there...and because ozone is unstable in its natural form, it continually breaks down into oxygen constantly...so because of this constant reforming ozone, there would have to be a serious lack of oxygen for it to be damaged...and while we're on that note...if the ozone layer was damaged, the UV rays from the sun would be so intense, that everyone living in Sydney would be dead long before now...
Now...the Globe is gradually getting warmer...there is no doubt about that...you may actually not notice it...the change is that slight per year that it probably wont affect us for a while yet...and frankly, the talk of the poles melting and flooding the world is pure crap...ever heard of the ice in the water trick? when you freeze water, you have only made it denser...and by freezing it, it has to take up more space...so when you melt it, the water takes up LESS area and in fact appears less than what you started with...now we apply this to the poles...if the poles melt, the water level wont rise...in fact its more likely to fall slightly...think about it...water freezes to ice, then melts...you havent gained water...so how can the level rise?
Like I said...the earth is most definately warming up...but not enough to make any real difference...

I'm not really sure on this topic, I'm not much on Meterology or Aerosapce, but it is really possible if you think about it(whoever has seen the movie "The Day After Tomorrow") if you really pay attention to that movie, there are a lot of facts there, if the poles do really melt due to global warming and the salinity of the ocean water decreases, it could actually mess up the currents, and then we might actually end up in the next Ice Age.
Now Global Warming really is a big issue here, I mean, if you look at Venus, it has the same problem with the Co2 in the atmosphere. If Earth really does have this over pollution of the gas, Global Warming truely is possible. And this is a really scary thought, Global Warming doesn't seem that big "oh, a few degrees more" but think about it ppl, this can become a much bigger issue then it seems.
Now as I said b4, I'm no meterologist, so I'm just going with my oppinion here, I'm going by what I've heard<coughswhatthegovernmentmakesusbelievecough>, but w/e, this is what I'm being fed, it's what I"m gonna believe, until I find reason to think otherwise.

Well now, I wear jeans all year.
But that's just me.
I'd have to say "mabye," seeing as Redeye misspelled it. :D
But seriously, I'm undecided
Actually, Neo_Sephiroth, you're half-wrong about CO2 and CO. These ARE "Greenhouse Gases", but they can be dealt with. Go plant a tree, and you're eliminating excess carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide converts to CO2 after some time in the atmosphere. While they have a bad effect, you're correct to place the blame elsewhere.
Here's the problem:
Hydrocarbons. Compounds of hydrogen and carbon. (duh) These don't occur naturally in the atmosphere, so they don't dispell. On top of that, there isn't any kind of plant that uses them to photosynthesize. So they remain stagnant.
Now, I'm honestly not sure if there IS a problem, but if there is, then those gases would be causing it.
But I think the world SHOULD be getting hotter, simply because energy doesn't leave in the volumes it comes in... methinks. I could be wrong about that.
The fact we're creating electricity, pollution or no pollution, creates more heat than the planet used to have.
I feel that I should say "Yes" to this whole darned thing, but I don't want to jump to conclusions... yet.

That could be true on the slight scale yes but earth doesnt have as thick clouds as venus and its position to the sun does make it naturaly warmer.

Hmmm...yes they are called 'greenhouse gasses', but like I said before, CO2 makes up a total of 0.01% of the atmosphere...now about hydrocarbons, it has been stated that the main cause of global warming is in fact the 'hole in the ozone layer'...this is in fact untrue looking at chemical evidence...whether these hydrocarbons lie stagnant or whatever, ozone reproduces too consistently for them to have any effect...therefore eliminating the problem...and also, I touched on it briefly, but if there really was a hole in the ozone layer, the world wouldnt just warm up, it would be flooded with UV radiation which if we get enough exposure to, can kill us...ozone blocks the UV from entering the atmosphere, or at least some of it...so we get a reasonably healthy dose...

Oh the Science of it all.
I can't really compete with scientific explanations. *can't be arsed mostly* So, I'll just have to say: IT SEEMS POSSIBLE enough. I don't want to be too complacent.
And because most of you people are just skeptics! :P We should be open minded? Riight... ^-^

I believe that the overuse of cholofloral chemicals [CFC] has a part in damaging the O-zone. the chemicals put more CO2 (carbon Dioxide) in the atmosphere and it messes up the Ozone, im not sure. Also, the cars in the world have a part in this. They create pollution and stuff that adds to global warming. Eventually, it will be like the Day after Tommorow [the movie :P].
redeye_ryu - June 11, 2004 10:59 PM (GMT)
ehhh
i forgot about other factors to global warming..
1. like elza said (damn she is smart...not as smart as aeris :P) it is a long proccess..it isnt going to happen in a decade (hell it might happen when im dead)
2. FRONTS!...when i was saying it was cold..well it was most likly a cold front from Canada (i do live in michigan after all)..and also warm fronts (like a few days ago..it reached 90..AND MY DAMN AIR CONDISIONING(SP?) WAS BROKEN!!!!!!!!!! sweat my butt off :D)....and today the high is like what...60!..then again its been raining all day
so....its kind of hard to tell if it is true
P.S> i cant remember what gasses that cause global warming i think its O3 (3 oxygen atoms) and....3 atoms is kind of heavy so...dont think it will reach WAY UP THERE! (after all...plain old oxygen cant reach up there)
and carbom monaxide isnt very common in the atmosphere...and is also a heavy molecule
