I did a bit of researching around IF about our recent onslaught of drug advertising spam bots in the VGM section. t'would appear it's a security issue.

InvisionFree has discovered the source of the software that has been recently used to spam so many of your boards. We will be taking steps to combat this software now that we know how it works.
The first and most important steps to take are regarding e-mail validation. Enabling e-mail validation is one of the easiest and most effective ways to slow down the robots. After you enable e-mail validation, go to Admin CP > Ban Settings and ban the following e-mail address sets:
* *@cashette.com * *@mail.ru * *@gawab.com * *@web.de
This will prevent almost all spam from showing up on your board.
InvisionFree will be investigating the signature behavior of this spambot software and you should see a marked improvement over the coming weeks.
Our new software, ZetaBoards, includes powerful integrated spambot protection, far superior to that which is found in the IPB 1.3 software. In addition, new moderation tools make it easy to pin down troublesome accounts and remove their posts quickly.
We are constantly working to make your board more secure. At InvisionFree, we want you to be able to concentrate on building your community, and let us handle the rest. |
I'm not gonna turn on the email validation, 'cause I don't think it's really necessary..but if Peter wants his box spammed with spam bots wanting to be validating, it's his choice xD I'll just go in and ban some addresses...see if that helps any. Not that anyone's really around here to give a shit about whether the spam bots happen or not...but eh. xD

But spam is lame :(
It's the principle of the thing! Kill the bots! They have rebelled against their organic masters!!1!!! omgz0rz11!

Well it's Peter's email address that will have to deal with all of the validating emails. So...I won't make that decision for him :)

I thought email validation was when the board sent an email to the registered user's email address...they then click the activation link...as apposed to member validation which is where the admin decides who is good and who isnt...at least thats what it was like on vBulliten and the like...
Having said that...I dont particularly like the idea of my inbox being spammed by stuff like this so no...dont set it up if thats what it does...Im sure we can find some other way of getting around this...

We can just go on a cleany spree for now. :/ If it gets worse, we can always turn it on. (I've got nothing against flooding Peter's inbox XD)
