Title: ...MySpace & Schools
Lu Xihao - February 13, 2006 08:41 PM (GMT)
In my Anatomy class we were talking about MySpace, and how teachers were told to log on and WATCH their students. In my sister's school, people were getting suspended for having things about them smoking pot or drinking on there.
I'm not sure if it's just my demented town, does it happen in other High School? In any case, how do you feel about this?
I think MySpace and school should be just like that; seperate. MySpace is a site; it doesn't affect someone's school work. To go online and search for students, and get them in trouble INSIDE school? It doesn't solve a thing, because when they're suspended, I can bet money a few of those kids were on MySpace.
Yes, yes. I think it's silly.

If they were using school computers/network resources to post that to their pages, then the school could punish them for it. However, just having that on their webspace is not valid evidence that they have actually even done it, and I think if you had the time and the resources, you could probably sue the school for wrongful suspension.

Same thing happens at my school, apparently. I think it all started here after some kids at my old middle school decided to start saying "I wish (name) was dead." and people would respond "Yeah I wish she was dead too." "Let's kill her" and somebody as far away as Oceanside, CA said they'd come up here and help x_x
Morons gotta go and ruin all the fun for everyone with their idiotic behavior.

In my school, there's a filter, and EVERYTHIIING is blocked. So no MySpace there.
Also. Last Thursday, they did a drug search in the High School a town over, and they searched people's cars that had drug-related things on their MySpace profiles. Again, I think that's definatlyyy crossing the line.

They have Myspace blocked at my school... And college. How pathetic. Although, I think you are right. It should be seperate.
Myspace is what you do on your OWN TIME. Not something the teachers should be sitting on their butts doing...

I dunno, it's the same at my school.
I don't really care to be honest. o_O
It makes sense to filter it, I mean, why not? It's not school-related. xD And the school computers are for educational use only. Not for...looking up other students.

Well, I agree with you, Shaydah, but that's a little off-topic. The matter at hand isn't being able to get on myspace at school, it's whether schools should be able to suspend students for material posted on myspace, regardless of whether it's at school or not (at least, that's my understanding.)

Schools and MySpace is like Church and State... should be seperated... nuff said

I suppose it depends...if a student had been suspected of something and then said teachers etc looked at myspace to find evidence of said act, then maybe there is some excuse for it happening...having said that, I have to say I agree with the general argument...As much as I dont like myspace, I will say that its the same with any blog page...teachers shouldnt hunt on it for stuff to incriminate students in the first place...and to suspend someone for something they said on a blog without anything to back it up is just stupid...

Personally, I think it's none of the school's business what students do on myspace. They're basically stalking you online o_O And that's just creepy.
As for blocking it off the computers, I agree with Shaydah. It's not an educational site. Many people use it as a dating service, and that kind of thing is definitely not school appropriate.

There was a big thing about the catholic school looking at kids myspace and suspending kids for it. >.> Not sure why.
I'm in agreement that myspace & school are kinda seperate. xD Christ, let's jump over to Livejournal.

I agree with Katrak. It sounds like the teachers are stalking you. I mean, honestly, what's it to them? People say stuff, sure, it doesn't necessarily mean its all true.
MySpace is banned at my school too. Like, not "banned" but, blocked, all that jazz. As well as pretty much everything else...including the image search on Google for Pete's sake. But back on topic, the whole concept is ridiculous if you ask me. MySpace and school have nothing to do with each other. As a matter of fact, it's more of a way to get AWAY from school. Now who the heck needs school following you there, too?
NOT me. [cough];;
