Title: games into movies
Description: or vice versa?
Hugh Laurie - November 8, 2005 11:14 AM (GMT)
I just saw an article that Silent Hill is being made into a movie. I am freaked. I've always wanted that game made into a movie! It's just like genius. Except ya know, they have to do it right! I even saw a screen of it and thought well that's amazing! The foggy, eerie environment is back. I'm just friggin' excited!
So, what do you think of this? Is this a good move or haven't the TPTB learned from their past mistakes yet? I hear Konami is producing this one so maybe just maybe it'll come out right. Did you like SH and felt it should have been a movie too?
And to add more to the topic, what do you think of games being turned into movies or vice-versa? Should they just stick to their original platforms and stop crossing into different mediums to gain profit and give us all a headache in the end!? Because honestly, they often ruin things and sway away from the originals, which although is good for copyright laws, ruins the essence and beauty of the originals.
:err:

I think it's generally a Bad idea. >.>
Except LotR games, those are badass.
But most games-->movies end up you know, sucking.
Here, I'll use the best example that everybody uses for this kind of topic xD Mario Brothers.

First of all, the Mario Bros. movie was COOL. Secondly, I've never heard of Silent Hill, so I can't give an opinion about that. What they SHOULD make a movie of is MYST. I mean, you already have three books and (very soon now) five games, so you have MORE than enough material with which to work from.

Silent Hill into a Movie would be quite awsome, i just hope they make it another Resident evil, or Doom...aka (resident evil mars style, that movie should be reclassified as comedy, cause all i did was laugh). but i can see it happening
"a small peacful town in america, its inhabitant have....disappeared. an elite commando squad has been sent in to uncover the truth" (with no relevance to the original story or concept, let alone characters.....yet another game-movie conversion botched by hollywood)
I hope it doesn't happen again <_<

Hey, I actually liked Mario Brothers! B) Though I disagreed with the story about Princess Toadstool (or however you spell her name O_o).
Rufus_X: I'm hoping they won't make the same mistake either. I haven't watched Doom but Resident Evil was definitely a disaster. This one's going to be made by Konami. Japanese sooooo who knows....? *flashes of FF: TSW comes back to haunt us all* Let's just cross our fingers, heads, and everything! ^-^

That will make three books nobody's read and four games nobody's played. -_-
If I can remember way back to when the first MYST came out, the only thing anybody I knew liked about that game was the graphics. The only time I hear it mentioned nowadays is to chuckle about how it had no story and didn't make much sense. Gotta be honest, I don't think there's a movie in there. It would be much more lucrative to just keep pumping out crap movies that they know people will go to see no matter what.

Ah, the words of someone who has no idea what he's talking about and is not willing to make any effort to TRY to know what he's talking about.
Just because a game doesn't have extremely bloody battles or excessive innuendos doesn't mean it doesn't have a plot. It just means you actually have to THINK to play it and realize what's going on.

WOW..... its hard to belive that anyone has never heard of or played SH...
NEway... i heard the they where also making the Fatle Frame games into movies and i heard that Spielburg was directing it.... but that was a while ago and it may have been canned...
But yeah.... They can not screw up SH.... they better base it directly on the game and not on some guy you never heard of that only meets the characters of the game....
SH4 was such a great game... it would be good if they made that into a movie...
Bill Gates - November 10, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
I've liked a few game movies...such as Parasite Eve. I really liked that one ^^
And AC of course ._.
But yeah, most games that get turned into movies don't exactly do well. Sure, I liked Super Mario Brothers when I was little...but looking at it now, it's like.."Wow." xD

I dont think that one counts..... the PE movie was based on the book........ the game was also based on the book just with a diff setting and character and such and stuff....
and yeah if AC can do it... there is still hope for movies based on video games...

Can't see how you people liked that movie. Y_Y
But I agree 100% on the Myst Idea, that game was badass man! I had a lot of fun with those games.
Bruce Lee - November 10, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
Yeah Mario Brothers is still cool!
I reckon Tomb Raider was a flop for anyone but the fanboys. And Mortal Kombat's two movies were wicked.
You know what would be cool? An anime version of the master system version of Ninja Gaiden. With remixed music of the game. I think i'd die if that came out lol.
Toushiro Hitsugaya - November 10, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
I like MK1.... the second movie not to much....
and yeah... the tomb raider movie sucked big time...
and the Alone in the Dark movie pretty much floped when it was released.... i dont think anyone even saw that movie...

I don't know anything about the plot. I've only seen MYST played. I'm getting this from a host of reviews and from what many other people have told me. My opinion doesn't even play into it. I go to a nerd school where people play video games all day long and know about every video game ever made, so if people here aren't into the series then it's almost impossible that the movie would do well with the general populace. Movies are produced based on what Joe Football Player will take his girlfriend to see. The MYST series does not qualify. It wouldn't even do well among the nerds who go here.
And there is probably nobody on the planet who values a good plot and detests lazy games and movies more than I do. I have given many examples of this in my posts here, in fact I've talked of little else. All of my favorite games are the ones with great storylines and creativity. I couldn't care less about violence or "innuendos," whatever that means.
Canitoch - November 10, 2005 01:36 AM (GMT)
Mario was awesome! Toad was like a smoker..the king was in this giant thing..and Yoshi was anything but a cute green dinosauar. Oh..Bowser was this blonde haired dude.
I only remember the scene where the king was in that big egg thing? And if I remember..Princess Peach was sucked into this wall that turned to sand or something..blahblahblah

WRONG.
I loved the first Tomb Raider movie. The second was okay, but it just wasn't the same...I mean, bungey ballet...THAT made the movie..xD Okay, not really, but I still love it.
And Mortal Kombat...yesh yesh. Whenever I watch those movies, I always get in the mood to fight something..usually my siblings o_o;
Jack Thompson - November 10, 2005 03:19 AM (GMT)
They should make a movie based on FF1! Well, 8-Bit Theatre, to be specific, but since that's SORT of based on the storyline of FF1...
They have a few flash movies of 8-bit theatre on Newgrounds. Ever seen those?
Flash movies can hardly be considered "making a game into a movie".
Which is why I edited your post, rather than making a full post about it myself. And you didn't answer my question! xD
No, I haven't.

Unfortunately they won't base it on any of the games of the series. :P
I hear it's going to be a new female character and they're going to bring back one character from SH1, Sybil? I'm not sure if that's how you spell her name.
Article here. But wtfeth, I didn't know there was a Parasite Eve movie!? When was this? Details yo!

Bruce Lee - November 11, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)

Toushiro Hitsugaya - November 11, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)

Yeah that was a wicked movie. Gun katas, sword fights, a fresh plot, everything's great about it.
Can't wait for an anime DMC movie :)
Styxx - November 12, 2005 01:54 PM (GMT)
yeah you kinda had to understand the places of the Mario people.I mean the movie was cool and everything, but its just that they didnt fall with the real Mario story ya know. But now SH4 thats different, i think that will be a good movie.
Toushiro Hitsugaya - November 12, 2005 07:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah but you know what game was made to be a movie..... thats right... Metal Gear Solid, I read its in its development stage... if only Kurt Russle was like 20 years younger.... becuz you know.... the Escape from LA/New York movies.... Solid Snake was pratical a copy of Kurt's Snake Pliskin Character.... and he pulled it off nicely....
