Title: Is America really the home of the free?
Jadestone - July 21, 2005 08:47 PM (GMT)
I`ll have to say no.... We boast about how free we are, when in reality we have more laws telling us how to live our lives than any other country.
We even have laws on how to have sex... i live i Florida and there is actually a law saying it is illegal to give or recieve oral sex.....
I think that America has too many laws and we need to drop a lot of them, keep in mind there are laws we need, the ones that make no sense...
this is my input on this subject.

Phew, glad i live in Australia. I think the word free needs to be defined here. Look it up. But by the land of the free, i believe they're talking about that you guys ain't enslaved or under martial law or whatever. You have freedom of speech, something not common in 3rd world countries. You are free to do whatever you wish, however to prevent anarchy (because we're only human) people need to have laws on them. Now i don't think the banning of oral sex on one state can really say that america isn't the land of the free lol. Are there any laws that actually make america a non-free nation? I also believe that america suffers from the highest crime rate in the 1st world society. More crime means stricter laws doesn't it? Basically my point, unless a rebuttal is made, is that the american people have only brought these things on themselves. If they were more behaved, laws like that wouldn't have to be enacted. And i know that it is the few spoiling it for the rest, but that happens everywhere. It's life :P
I believe that any country with the technology that America has is considered 'free'. Australia, America, England, most of Europe actually. America is not the land of the free, it's a land of the free ;)

*shrug* Everybody is screwed up, but I find it funny that all these other countries hate Americans. ^^ I don't know, I don't hate the country, I just live here.

Very well said.
There's site for stupid laws such as those, I believe they're just outdated. ^_^ And no one really pays attentiont to them, especially the one you said. =p
Land of the free doesn't really bother me as much as "Home of the brave". Since we're usually screaming in terror while the other countries are like "wtf. o_O"

We're a lot free-er (xD) than many other countries out there. Sure, we have a ton of laws, but without them, we'd be in chaos. I'll agree that there are some very stupid laws out there, but the majority of laws that do exist in the United States our for protecting us, and our freedom.
You should be proud to live in the country that gives you the liberties that you have. You're living a lot better off than a very large percentage of countries out there.

i was told by my government teacher this summer, that democracy is what makes us free, or some thing like that. i think that all government will eventually become corupt and that democracy just prolongs it the best. Then once its corupt, we looose our freedom!

America isn't free to an extent, its free-er than most countries but there is no way its totally free.
But I learned that only 17 states ban having sex with animals so those hillbillies in the south are sorta free (why do I know this? I read it on another forum. Some dude died having.. I don't wanna think about it).
If anything Canada is more free than the States. Sure, we don't allow the whole gun thing but its alot free-er in other ways.

wow rofl. Anyways of course we're not "free", especially blacks. We were emancipated and all, but still face oppresion on a daily basis. On to the laws. We have a militia that doesn't reccomend public prayer and a nation with "under God" in its Pledge of Alligence. And the whole oral thing in Florida. XP Lastly, I believe that prostitution should be legal...if you can't get laid , call up a pimp and have some company. Another restricting law (in general) for blacks.

I'm not sure if you should just say blacks; it might seem that way since black has a large percentage in this country. But everyone is really oppressed. Everyone. People just always believe they're better than everyone else, and that their race is awesome. Regardless of who they are. I'll admit people can be racist against blacks, but really some blacks are racist against the others too, you know? I've been hit with it, even though I never showed any racism. @_@
Hispanics/Asians/Middle Easterns/etc. all face it.
Sorry, I just had to say that. I hear everyday you know, that "People are racst against my race!" And it just you know...Don't act like you're the only one.

True, but you gotta realize that ppl are realizing that the only reason everyone is in New Orelans and there is a slow evac is because they're black. 65% of the population is black, with the rest either poor or outta there way before the hurricane hit. Look at the tsunami, every1 went on the "help" bandwagon and they're all fine now. Also, the Live8 2005 was a classic example of black irrelevance. They even said, "We don't want your money, we want your support" WTF? Support doesn't do 5h1t in this country or any other country. Money makes the world go round. Meanwhile, all the performers are getting $30,000-$40,000 gift bags...$30 grand can feed hundreds-thousands in Africa right now, or make decent housing there, or both. I know there's other conflicts with racism out there, but this has been going on for centuries, not decades, not years.

I think Kie pretty much nailed what I would have said.
But I disagree with the whole third world thing. The problem with that is most people don't really know a lot about third world countries. Doesn't mean if you're a third world country, you'll be just like every other third world country out there. They're branded or considered as one for exclusive reasons, I think. Anyway what I'm trying to say is, like my country who's very much third world, we still have more freedom compared to countries like Singapore or China (until only recently), who's obviously better off than us and not really a third world country- refering to Singapore. An example of this is how we're able to use the 'freedom of speech' right. As far as I know, in Singapore rallies are not prohibited and illegal. How can you say you're free when you're not allowed to say how you feel? I guess, the only downside for this is some people abuse the what 'freedom of speech' is all about. <_<
I won't elabore more than that since I've been very much off-topic but I felt I just needed to say that.
Generally, I don't believe in the 'home of the free' statement. I think they only say this because they relate being free with 'wealth'. America is a super power or probably, the only super power country now. No one can 'supposedly' touch them. (I'm not mocking though maybe that's how it sounds). And then things go their way and they blame the middle east. I mean, if they actually didn't try to shove how powerful they were in everyone's faces, these things wouldn't happen....
Look at Canada... there wouldn't be terror if you don't invite terror. It's quite hard to explain but if you disagree feel free to express your feelings against my statement.

Free is but a word. In reality, there's no such thing.

Freedom of speech- One the one hand, we can criticize our government. On the other hand we have things like "hate speech" laws and certain keywords on the phone and internet that get you investigated by the FBI, so there are limits. Maybe more than there should be in a totally "free" society." In China, for example, using the word "democracy" in a blog entry will make a window pop up, notifying you that you are using forbidden language. I'd say we have enough freedom of speech to get by.
Freedom of religion- A lot of atheists/agnostics get peeved because of a lot of religious rhetoric and allegory used by people in American government, documents, monuments, and songs. Being an atheist, learning the actual laws was somewhat important to me. Separation of church and state is a widely used catch-phrase, but the words and concept of it are nowhere in the constitution. I don't care where religious people put monuments, or if the pledge has "under god" in it (even though it was only added in the 1950's and I think it's silly and sounds forced). Seems to me that you can more or less practice any religion you want here and nobody will interfere. So I'd say we have freedom of religion, or lack thereof, in my case.
Freedom of assembly- Extremist groups are still allowed to assemble all the time in America. The government will sometimes even use taxpayer money to close off roads for them and offer them police protection while doing so. So I'd say this freedom is intact.
