Veterans of last year will remember a number of things about the winding down season 2003.
- Chris went missing after getting a girlfriend.
- Magro earnt a reputation as a fire-brand after abusing everyone on the field
- Hoy, Dave, and Magro played their hearts out for the Drummond & Smith Reds.
Well, things have changed... a little. Chris is single (Call 1900 555 667), Magro's still abusive, and Hoy is now the only ASRL coach still plying his trade for the Reds.
The side's Round One clash put them up against last year's winners, St. Alberts, who are immensely successful due to their Rugby side of the same name. Whilst the Reds shocked all present by leading 12-10 at halftime, they couldn't whether the full brunt of an Albies' comeback, and eventually went down 26-12. I missed the game. That's why they lost.
Game two, and one of last year's stars (Magro) and the leader of the sledging, cheerleading, and commentating board (Chris) stood on a crowded side-line for Drummond and Smith's big match against Austin College. Last year the Austin boys not only beat D&S, they also played dirty football. David McElroy was concussed, and one of Austin's players was given a year ban from League as a result of his tactics.
So, the game had a lot of history, even though most of Austin's big men had left. With Austin's fans drumming on one side, and D&S' roaring abuse from the other- it was a spirited opening. A guy we went to school with played for Austin, and got a liberal ear-bashing as a result. Ben Kirchner (yes, he does exist) was amazing- dancing through their line almost at will, and snaring the Reds' first try after Nathan Hoy made a memorable side-line run. He got a set of knees in the ribs as well. Let's have a collective 'awwwww' for Hoy.

Awwwwww
Kirch missed the conversion, and it proved to be the only points of the first half, with a sloppy final five leading into a 4-0 halftime lead for the Reds.
The second half started off poorly for D&S, with the side grimly defending their own line and continually penalised for coming up too fast. Eventually Austin cracked the line, some shithead scoring and Riebelt (the guy from our school) hitting the conversion for a 6-4 lead.
Ben Kirchner, big Doug Rumble, and tough-as-nails Justin Eagan lifted the side though, and two tries before full-time (another to Kirch) had the score finished at 14-6.
It was a classic encounter, hardly 'pretty', but the Reds have the points. With only Robb College (dominant side as well) and Earl Paige to go- the Reds' will be hoping to take out another win to clinch third spot for the second year running.
