Stingrays put more fuel on the fire
Demons down 3-nil in feud
Hunter Demons narrowly missing out on a victory on the weekend against arch rivals the Port Maquarie Stingrays with a 20 - 14 loss. The Port Maquarie Stingrays and the Hunter Demons have had a strong rivalry since they had to play each other in rd1 of the Bob Fulton cup this year and in the first round of division two as well. Both Games were tough with fights flowing freely in both games like the blood spilt, both games were won by the more experienced Port Maquarie Stingrays. This explosive game in Newcastle on the weekend was no different.
The Demons held the reins with a 2-0 lead at half time with some thrilling defence even though there tough as steel aproach resulted in an agressive retaliation from port Maquarie that got port penalised for fighting. The stingrays were unlucky to get points on the board in the first half with one try disalowed by the video ref.
Port looked like they were in trouble with backrow partners Damien Feilds and Daniel Waggon Missing due to Origin duties for Q.L.D. In the second half though port steped up a level and started playing like a team possesed knowing that with there strong rivalary with Huter this game had to be won for prides sake, having never lossed to Hunter before. The stingrays Skipper David Peachey suprised fans as he took on the goalkicking duties. Ports backs Jason Barsely, Jamaal Lolesi put points on the board with fantastic tries as well did Hunters Tyrone Pau and Brian O'Keefe with Clarke kicking three goals but the try of the day was David Bowe's last minute try to put the Stingrays out in front to win the game by six points after peachey converted his fourth consecitive goal in the game. Port was also unlucky with another try disalowed by the video ref during the second half but overal it was a close and exciting game from both teams.
With ports constant domination of Hunter this has put more fuel in the fire with Hunter as to speak with there side kicking up a gear every time they meet. One person who has kept this fued fiery is Ports Coach Ben Eason-Piggott. Who's words and opinions of the Rookie Coach Simon Laing started this intense rivalary. It's Ports coach who thinks that port can at least win there next two meetings with Hunter in the future that his side will hold a five- nill advantage at least. Hunters coach Simon Laing who has a high chance of getting rookie coach of the year for his constant efforts in exceeding expectaions of his team in division 2 has not been seen since the defeat, some say he has been in recleause ever since the third consective defeat from Port Maquarie. So with no words from Hunters coach it seems he's embarased of these defeats but trying hard to prove him self against his fierce rivals.
What ever happens this year most fans are predicting and hoping the Stingrays and the Demons make the top eight and meet in the finals so they can see an even more spectacular chapter to this on going rivalary.
Good show Port MacQuarie. We think youre doing a knock up job with what littke you have. If you guys can make the finals this years we will be willing to donate money toward getting you guys uniforms for your games. It saddens us a bit to se David Peachy running around in an old "Full House" shirt..
