Title: The Diva, better than Pharlap?
trognierrrr - November 1, 2005 04:39 AM (GMT)
Man i cant believe she won again, and i wasnt on her :( i really thought shed run well, but i thought the 58kg's would be too much for her, i had her in my trifecta, but sadly my other horses went up to shit anyway.....
I really think a debate this morning would have put Pharlap in front, but a debate now would possibly put the Diva in front of the great one.

I can't say, since I've never seen Pharlap run, but damn was it a rush to see her take it out againt his year. I just wish I'd got on her, rather than backing a relative outsider in Eye Popper.

Phar Lap only won one MC.

there is no comparison. Phar Lap is waaaayyyy better than the Diva.
Sure, the Diva completed the hat trick...but who can really say what Phar Lap would have achieved if he was not poisoned in his prime.
Phar Lap succeeded overseas, Diva did not.
The track on Cup day was clearly doctored to favour the diva, because of stupid Lee Freedman opening his mouth and saying "we'll scratch her", and the MJC wouldnt want that now would they, the Diva was the horse that everyone wanted to see.
Sure, the Diva is the best horse of this millenium, but comparing her to Phar Lap is just ludicrous IMHO.

I would never be as bold to make a definate decision, you make some good points, but..... u need to reallise that in this day and age going overseas to win a big race isnt needed when quite clearly the MC is one of the biggest races on the international calender, we have horses from all around the world coming over here to compete for it, and not too many have succeeded............
Not that you can base a horses career on the MC alone....did u know that Archer who won the first melbourne cup hailed from Nowra, he walked from Nowra to Flemmington for the race and still managed to win, now thats remarkable :P

both great non australian horses :P

Both are champion horses, but people who are jumping on the Diva bandwagon maybe it is time to have a look at Phar Laps record.
37 wins, 1 Melbourne Cups, and also won the Victoria Derby, the Australian Jockey Club Derby, the W. S. Cox Plate (twice), the Melbourne Stakes, the Linlithgow Stakes, and other stakes wins.
Makybe Diva has won 3 Melb Cups but no where near as many other races. It is just like in v8 supercars, Peter Brock won a heap of Bathursts but Dick Johnson shits on him as a driver because he has 3 more championships then Brock. :)

Maybe we should just settle on Makybe Diva as being the horse of the 21st century, with Phar Lap being the horse of the 20th.
