Just eight teams remain in the 2005 Bob Fulton Cup, and fans are already salivating at the prospect of thrilling games to come.
The opening clash of the round of sixteen couldn't have been more exciting, with Central and underdogs Eastwood going into extra time after eighty minutes of play could only produce a 16 all draw. The Phoenix's class and experience shone in the extra period, as they defended grimly and posted two tries (one in each period) for a 26-16 victory and a place in the quarter finals.
Central: Keith Senior 2, Clinton Schifcofske 2, and Luke Priddis. Maquina 3/6
Eastwood: Jason Death and Steve Stacey 2. March 2/3
PoM Points: Steve Stacey 3, Christian Cullen 2, and Clinton Schifcofske 1.
The enthusiasm and pride of the Tonga Reef Sharks was clearly outclassed in today's David and Goliath struggle between the invitational side and the premiership heavyweights, Gold Coast, who are on track for their third successive Bob Fulton Cup win following a solid 34-10 trouncing of the Islanders.
Gold Coast: Gordon D'Arcy, Matt King, Luke Rooney, Matt Orford, Julian Santarakista, and Milton Thaidy. Sinfield 5/7
Tonga: Josh Lewis and Brendan Williams. Singh 1/2
PoM Points: Gordon D'Arcy 3, Matt Orford 2, and Luke Rooney 1.
North Queensland have emerged victories in an entertaining clash with Liverpool today, the 26-12 victory seeing the Dolphins as the first Division Two club to qualify for the quarter finals. Fans of the Townsville side are now harkening back to the cup's inaugural year, in which the then Townsville Dolphins were shocked finalists.
Liverpool: Paul Atchison and Gus McCrae. March 2/2
North Queensland: Kris Radlinski, Derren Witcombe, David Frame, and Bill Narwan. Kirchner 5/6
PoM Points: Brett Finch 3, Wycliff Palu 2, and David Frame 1.
The round's first all Premier League fair was an all Sydney affair, with the newly relocated Hornsby Mavericks making the trip across to Brookvale to take on the dark horse Northern Cannons. In an enthralling 'old style' clash, both sides showcased some tough defence, but ultimately last season's runners up were triumphant - scoring a solid 19-10 victory that will put them in good stead for the quarter finals.
Northern: Mat Rogers, Michael DeVere, and Mark O'Meley. Pariah 3/4. Pariah 1 fg.
Hornsby: Joe Roff and Matthew Rieck. Roff 1/3
PoM Points: Trent Pariah 3, Michael DeVere 2, and Mark O'Meley 1.
If the Gold Coast Crusade are thinking they're home and hosed to take out the Cup this year, they'd better look in their own backyard. The Surfers Paradise Punks have secured the biggest win of the round in their clash with the Perth Taipans, dismantling the Western Australian club and scoring a decisive 34-8 victory.
Surfers Paradise: Rhys Wesser 2, Greg Inglis, Paul Deacon, Tyrone Pau, and Adam Perry. Deacon 5/7
Perth: Derick Hougard. Wilkinson 2/2
PoM Points: Tyrone Pau 3, Paul Deacon 2, and Rhys Wesser 1.
Suva remain alive for their chance at ASRL participation care of today's dour 12-4 victory over the Ryde Eagles. In the battle of minnows, the Surge out-enthused one of last year's dominant RSC franchises to progress through to the quarter finals. The dream should end there, however, with opposition of a far higher calibre than what Suva are used to. The late inclusion of disgraced Auckland forward, Ali Williams, proved a masterstroke.
Suva: Jarred Lawrence and Ali Williams. Lucas 2/3
Ryde: Brian Jellick. Smith 0/2
PoM Points: Jarred Lawrence 3, Colum Halpenny 2, and Ali Williams 1.
The Tamworth City Titans have joined North Queensland as Division Two representatives in a Premier League heavy quarter final setup, accounting for Cairns easily, 24-6. The Titans played lazy football, obviously trying to avoid injuries, and came up with the desired result.
Tamworth City: Anthony Farrah, Matthew Gidley, Craig Smith, and Luke Ricketson 2. Bates 2/6
Cairns: Brooke Martin. Martin 1/1
PoM Points: Anthony Farrah 3, Scott Logan 2, and Eron Bates 1.
Christchurch have put themselves in fine stead to fight for promotion in Division Two this year, but were ultimately outgunned by Wollongong in the round three match of the round. Both sides have had to endure thrillers to get this far, and today's match was no different, Kobe Patrick scoring a tie-breaking try with just minutes to spare. The final score: 22-18.
Wollongong: Raymond Ruaporo, Kobe Patrick, Jaime Soward, and Danny Ward. Covell 3/4. Ahmed 0/1
Christchurch: Gagma, Tony Price, and Stacey Katu. Rumble 3/5
PoM Points: Jaime Soward 3, Stacey Jones 2, and Danny Ward 1.
Stupid Mavericks trying to undercut my junior base. They should go back to their oyster farms.
PARIAH!
When will rd three formies be posted?
Horsnby are dissapointed at the loss but now we can concentrate on the hard task of being competitive this season. Well done to the Cannons who outplayed us in the end and i hope now that they manage to take out the BFC and make the Mavericks look better. And as far as undercutting your junior base then :P
Well, given that round four is being played midweek during the season proper, you won't need these formies.
