Title: Meet the Newbies

brandell - July 16, 2005 07:34 AM (GMT)
With their first trial already done with the Central Pheonix have shown that this season means business and with the Bob Fulton Cup approaching they are issuing their intentions to the top teams. But with a new season comes the new look team and we spent a few minutes with the new boys and asked them a few questions...

Luke joins us from the Ravens.

How confident are you going into this season?

Well who knows whats going to happen, I mean those Falcons won last year who would have guessed it. I guess we have to just wait and see.

Keith is a former Pheonix that was traded off a couple of seasons ago only to find himself back in the same colours this year.

So what is it like comming back to the Pheonix?

It feels great I didn't really want to leave in the first place and when I got the call from Randell at the end of last season I was stoked.

What do you see as your job this season?

Doing what I do best and thats scoring tries, they didn't have a good season last year and I will be out to rectify that. I mean if Central Coast can win then who can't win it?

Ashwin Willemse was traded to Central late from the Capetown Ravens in a bold move by the Ravens coach. He is a fiesty but determined winger.

How are you finding the climate of Australia?

Well we are over here quite a bit during the season and the Alice has a nice feel about it.

The Ravens had a bad year last year just like the Central how do you get by?

You just go out each and every week and try and do your best, thats all you can do.And make sure that we outdo the Falcons each and every week, how did those guys win last season?

6:Ronan O'Gara

Ronan came into the squad at the expense of the talented Steve Menzies. Big things are expected of him as he comes into the squad.

We hear you are a bit of a ladies man, how will you cope being in such a low populated area?

I'm not too sure mate I might have to wait for the away games so I can get some "action"

What do you think is expected for you this season?

I have been told that our plan is to focus roughly on the backs, the forward pack this year is a little lacking but I believe we have a squad capable of big things. I mean just look at the Cental Coast squad last season.

Sean has enjoyed the fruits of Division two with Canberra and comes into the side excited and energetic.

Your job roughly this year is to play second fiddle to O'Gara, does that phase you at all?

No not one bit, Randell has made it clear that I am more of a support player this year which is a little weird seeing as I have been the main man at Canberra for all these seasons. But this is the big league now and it's time to step up. And if that means I have to take out certain Falcons players well let it be, I mean how the hell did they even get close last season?

Jonny joins us from Melbourne and will be looked to hold together the inexperienced forward pack.

You won rookie of the year in your debut season, are you looking to recapture the same form you had back then?

That year was a great year for me but this year I'm just looking to fit in. In a team full of champions you have to be a special type of player to shine, I mean it's not a one man team like the Falcons, we all have a ton of class, infact I think we will shit on them this year.

And last but not least is the number 25 player for the Pheonix this season he is no other than.....

25: Brian Randell

Without a great deal fo depth in the team at the end of the contracts Randell decided to put the boots on and get ready to be the only person in the competition to play and coach at the same time. Whilst I doubt we'll see him play anytime soon Randell will no doubt get a chance to show that he can prouce on and off the field sometime this season.

So Randell some coaches might say that it is one of the worst moves in ASRL history to put yourself in the side, how do you see it?

Harry as you know I have been coping critism since I came into the ASRL, and I just fend it off the only way I know how and thats buy beating them on the field or in Magro's case in the car park after the game. Can you believe that Central Coast won last season?

No Mr Randell I can't it's unbeleivable. Will you follow the same strict regime that you have enforced onto your players?

Now lets not get to rash Harry I don't expect to have to play this year, but if I do you can have no doubt that I will be ready for the challenge. I train just as hard as my boys, I don't do anything I expect they wouldn't do.

So thats the newbies from the Central Phoenix this season, who knows just how it will pan out? I mean if the Falcons won last year does that mean that even Hornsby have a cance? Who knows?

Haha. You're so down on CCF. What if he smashes you twice this year?

Funny that your inability to recruit and coach has helped you run two sides into the ground. Hawkesbury have had many chances and Central used to be a power house club...

Jealousy is a bad taste to have in your mouth Randell.

I am a recruiting god, just look at my guns this year (me included :P ). Hawkesbury promoted two years in a row, I am a coaching god.
