The Bushwackers have fought back in round 2 of the finals to record a slim 2 wicket win over Newcastle. Newcastle were sent in and were never really ontop
of the NZ bowlers and were losing wickets at regular intervals to 7-144. Even though Newcastle had a long batting lineup, failures by Klusener, Laxman and
Gibbs saw them limp to 252 all out in the 48th over. Darren Lehmann scored yet another century this season, and again was unbeaten in his innings. Solid
starts by the top 4 players helped them along, but none went on with it, and in the endup Harmison second top scored with 38 behind Lehmanns 100. Pick of
the bowlers was Gillespie with 5 for 58, taking 4 of the top 5 batsmen in those figures.
The chase began with Kaluwitharana going second ball of the innings, gone to a great delivery form Harmison who was still on a high from his partnership of
82 with Lehmann. NZ went to 1-0 to 3-119 in a 79 run stand between Clarke and Tendulkar, Tendulkar scoring yet another 50 this series, and Clarke still
inform with 42 to backup his 130 last week. A mini collapse was on after Tendulkar fell, and NZ lost 4-35 and ended up in a similar position their opponents
were in earlier in the day. Gayle and Vettori rescued NZ with 60 at better than a runn a ball which saw NZ home with 7 overs to spare but only 2 wickets. If
Newcastle could have taken Vettori or Gayle, there more than likely would have been another upset in the finals. Harmison was the best with the ball for
Newcastle with 4-65 and also a crucial 38 with the bat.
POM points went 3 to Gillespie for his 5 wicket haul, taking 4 of the top 5 batsmen, 2 to Lehmann for yet another unbeaten 100, and 1 to Harmison for his
4-65 and 38.
