Title: Magro Announces Final Series

MrCharisma - March 28, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
New South Wales coach Anthony Magro has announced this current Origin series will be the last one he coaches as he steps down and moves to greener pastures in England.

Nobody is sure exactly how to take the annoucement after New South Wales went down 25-16 to Queensland last night. Some argue that Magro might not be the right man for the job and others argue he is sick of living in Chris Walker-Bushs shadow. What ever it is, it's gotten mouths talking and the Origin in the media focus once more.

After the Queensland victory last night, Magro placed a media ban on camera men and journalists attempting to enter the New South Wales dressing room after the loss. What we do know is that Magro is not impressed with the loss and some particular performances of specific players.

Already gossip of the dressing room is that Sydney Oilers captain Craig Gower will be dropped from the side as apart of the shake-up. Gold Coast halfback: Matt Orford who's come off the bench for the two games looks like the ideal choice, however; has suggested his own Central Coast Falcons halfback Brent Sherwin could find a place in the squad.

Another two injuries have crept into the New South Wales side, again backline line players in Hazem El Masri and Ryan Girdler. The possitive front is that Luke Rooney will return to the N.S.W line-up after straining a groin muscle.

"I feel we lack impact off the bench" quoted Magro. "I simply think we got out muscled this week by the likes of Webke, Crocker, Williamson, Civoniceva then Tallis and Flannery off the bench. I'll look to bring in a few additional friends of mine from my City Origin coaching days. I need quick injections into the side who can play under my rules. New South Wales isn't losing a series under my watch and that's how it's going to end" said Magro.

It's unsure who will be brought in and for where. With Central Coast only 2 competition points away from 1st position, will it be any of the Falcons including last weeks MotM and former Australian 5/8th Braith Anasta? Falcons enforcer Luke Davico? Mr Reliable Luke Patten? Former Australian rep Matt Burke? or it will be someone from the past who's been coached under Magro like Shaun Timmons? Either way the suspence will be there for the epic finalilly to the '05 Origin series.

TREACY A BOLTER FOR NSW APPOINTMENT:

A day after incumbent NSW coach Anthony Magro announced that this could be his last Origin series, many NSWRL officials began to panic and scramble around to find a replacement.

A number of names turned up and fitting the criteria of being a young coach, with viger and passion, Mick Treacy's name came up as a potential bolter. "He's qualifications speak for themselves. That Tassie team realistically should not be on top of the table in the fair dinkum department, and they are because of his mid-season trades and also his coaching. They are a brilliant defensive team on most weeks and lets be honest, defence isn't exactly our strong suit".

The calling for Mick Treacy as coach of NSW came as a shock to the young coach who was just appointed as the inaugral Malta Knights coach:

"Its certainly a shock to even hear my name being mentioned. Why? I don't know. It's been a great 12 months. Taking over Tassie, bringing them to where they are. Taking over Capetown not so long ago and i'm looking at a 1-2 year plan to make them successful and I will accomplish that. Also being appointed Malta's coach and recruiting for that team has been fun. It's just been quite a surreal few months".

Asked what he'd think of his appointment "I'd be a huge honour of course. I mean who wouldn't want to coach NSW. Its a brilliant team and I believe that they have the talent to beat any national side not only QLD. Obviously, origin 2 was a blemish but I believe NSW will rectify that situation in Game 3 and send Mag's off on a high"

Could Treacy be the new face of NSWRL, time will tell, but this reporter says while its totally unlikely, its certainly up for consideration.

Recently sacked Country Origin coach Brian Randell has also stepped forward to throw his hat in the ring for the spot. Floored in his two matches as Country coach Randell blamed a lack of options as his hinderance in being able to steer his teams to victory.

"I have yet to contact Mr. Walker Bush but will be doing so in the next few hours to express my interest in the job of NSW coach. I am an avid fan of the series and am one of the most loyal New South Welshman to have ever been born, it would be a great honor to help lead a team full of talent out onto the field against the Maroons."

Randell is the most high profile coach to have entered an interest in the spot at the moment, but some say his checkered past may inhibit his opportunities to capture the spot. Randell has improved as of late but his rep coaching record might stand in his way.

"I have already stated my feelings about the recent City Vs Country meeting, I believe I have the experience and the eye for the form players in the competition. Just like the great New South wales coaches before me. If given the chance it will be great to sit up with the likes of the great coaches such as Roger Bossert, Chris Walker Bush and the departing Anthony Magro."
