brandell - March 22, 2005 10:32 AM (GMT)
I just realised that this year we have a cavalcade of amazing movies comming to cinema. Some of them are
.Sin City
.Fantastic Four
.King Kong
.Ammityville Horror
.Batman Begins
.Star Wars
.War of The Worlds
.Bewitched
.Harry Potter
All of these movies boast an extreme amount of talent. I am excited!

- Sin City will be frigging awesome. They can't stuff up with that cast.
- Fantasic Four, I'll see it, but I don't really care
- King Kong might be good. Jackson was awesome on LOTR, but Kong isn't the same material :-p
- Amityville Horror should be cool. I've seen one of its many sequels. I think 'The Amityville Dollhouse'
- I don't like Batman, but Batman Begins might be ok. Christian Bale is cool
- Star Wars is shit. I hate the franchise
- War of the Worlds might be ok
- Bewitched will be shit. Is Nicole Kidman the star?
- Harry Potter should be cool

- Revenge of the Sith (Made me actually respect Lucas, in parts)
- Amityville Horror (One of the few scary movies that I've seen that is actually scary)

It's heaps scarier. The Grudge wasn't too bad, but Amityville is heaps scary

You dorks, how can you talk about movies when, in just one month, we will have Harry potter and the half-blooded prince?
MackDadday - June 15, 2005 04:47 AM (GMT)
Those who talk about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie are exonerated from dorkdom by the way...My favorite of the five books so far!

The Potter movies are ok. The books are shit. Written by an idiot.

How about this dichotomy between a film, and the book it was based upon...."Starship Troopers"? Whomever made the film - well, I would be exiled from the forum if I told you exactly what I thought...
...the book, by Robert Heinlein, is really cool - I wish Stanley Kubrick had directed the film :'(
"Bewitched" - based upon a decent '60's sitcom - Nicole Kidman won't be the problem, though - they couldn't properly replace Dick Sargent or Dick York in the Darren role, and that's the key...
...if they want to make a film based upon an old TV show, here are my suggestions, presuming they can cast better than "Bewitched" did:
Dad's Army - a classic worth doing a film about...
The Wiggles Meet Barney and Dora the Explorer - what would Captain Feathersword do with Barney? And would Dorothy let him? And why do I know anything about the Wiggles???
The Apprentice and the Sopranos - a new twist to "You're fired!" that you can't refuse...
Iron Chef and the Crocodile Hunter - What would they do with Steve Irwin's secret ingredient - croc dung? Or perhaps dingo livers? Or mayhaps live rats (for ratatouille)?
Prisoner in Cell Block H - this could cop eight Academy Awards, if done right...
...if you haven't seen "Cinderella Man", with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger, you should - it is not doing well at the box office here at the moment, despite favourable reviews, because it's too serious for early summer :(

And what does that make those who bought the books - in hardcover - at full price? Ms. Rowling is laughing all the way to the bank ;)
I would love to see some of Anne McCaffrey's books brought to film - particularly Dragonsong and Dragonsinger. If done right, they would make everyone forget about "LOTR", imo...
"War of the Worlds"? It's going to have a huge act to follow - the radio play version, by Orson Welles, from 1938. I don't see how it can do well by comparison - and even if they go camp, they can't possibly top "Mars Attacks!"
"King Kong" - a similar problem, but less so than "Worlds"...
I want to see "Batman Begins" - finally, the ghost of Adam West is interred :D :D

No argument from me - the original was cool, but it ran into the same problems all sequels/series tend to run into...

Got to agree that the Starship Troopers movie wasn't what it could have been. Still, as a mindless action flick, I enjoy it. The book was far better.
Whilst we're on the topic of wishlists, there are a few things I'd love to see translated to the silver screen someday.
A few of Stephen King's works that were bastardised by telemovies:
- It
- The Stand (Would need to be a multiple part film)
- Bag of Bones
Then there's any portion of Glen Cook's 'Black Company'. Hell, I'd even settle for them turning 'Myth: The Fallen Lords' into a film. The latter seems less likely, though.
Maybe Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy somewhere down the track. Or Redemption of Althalus! Ooh! I'm a nerd! :)
Anyone else excited about the likes of Halo, Doom, and Silent Hill being made into films?

So, a year on and I've had a look back at Randy's original list:
.Sin City
Tremendous movie. I already own it on DVD and consider it one of the best movies of the year.
.Fantastic Four
Yet to see it, but it's sitting in the living room on DVD waiting for me to watch it. I've heard mixed reviews.
.King Kong
Saw it last week and it was very good. Nothing you'll say is your favourite movie of all time, but a really good (albeit long) mix of action and sentimentality.
.Ammityville Horror
My 'dark horse' movie of the year. I went in expecting it to be terrible but I really enjoyed it. One of the few good horror movies I've seen.
.Batman Begins
Amazing film. Breathed new life into a character I've thought was tired and too cartoonish since Tim Burton stopped directing the movies.
.Star Wars
Was an improvement on the previous two offerings from Lucas, but not a patch on any of the originals. Still suffered from an abysmal script.
.War of The Worlds
Was decent enough, although the ending both sucked and was rushed. Had some amazing scenes, but was more 'miss' than 'hit'.
.Bewitched
Haven't seen it, nor do I want to.
.Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Was a tremendous movie, and arguably the best in the series so far.
I'd also add
. The Chronicles of Narnia
Surprised me. Whilst it's essentially Lord of the Rings lite, it did have some moments in which it excelled - most notably the battle at its conclusion.
.Serenity
Most won't have heard of it, but this movie adaptation of Joss Whedon's failed 'Firefly' television series was, for me, my movie of the year. Brilliant blend of comedy and action, a throwback of sorts to movies like Indiana Jones.
So, the new question is, what is there to look forward to in 2006? Without further ado I give you my list:
The Aforementioned List!
- X-Men 3
- Silent Hill
- Superman
I'm sure there are others. What movies are due out in 2006 that interest you?
