Title: Round 3 BFC Results

chriswalkerbush - December 14, 2004 12:53 PM (GMT)
This weekend's clashes decided spots in the BFC quarter finals, and there were a number of surprising results.

Berlin have come up with a stunning 10-8 upset victory over Surfers Paradise to shatter their previous record for survival in a BFC tournament, becoming the first invitational side to ever qualify for the finals of the lucrative competition. Both sides managed a sole try, with former Central Coast junior Sammy El Hajij kicking his side to a narrow victory.
Berlin: Andrei Doumalkine. El Hajij 3/3
Surfers Paradise: Tyrone Pau. Deacon 2/2
HT Score: Berlin 6-2
PoM Points: Paul Deacon 3, Adam Perry 2, and Tyrone Pau 1.

Wagga's dream run in this year tournament has come to an end at the hands of Division Two heavyweights, Canberra, but it was far from easy for last year's premiers. The Chargers took an 8-0 halftime lead, but were made to work for their victory in the second half thanks to some courageous Badgers' defence. The fulltime score of 12-0, showing just how tenacious the Badgers were.
Canberra: Brandon Costin and Gareth Carvell. Towers 2/4
Wagga: None.
HT Score: Canberra 8-0
PoM Points: Brandon Costin 3, Shane Perry 2, and Sean Towers 1.

Perth may have narrowly escaped relegation in a two game series against Canberra earlier this year, but today Capetown found out the influence that Darwin import Jonny Wilkinson has had at the club. The Taipans put on a real show for a soon-to-be silenced Newlands' crowd, scoring six tries to two in a 42-10 demolition of the reigning premiers.
Capetown: Hanse Gibbs and Derek Gateshead. Geyer 1/1. Johns 0/1
Perth: Rhys Wesser, Daniel Abraham, Derick Hougard, Tasesa Lavea, John Sitizein, and Ichiro Nazuki. Wilkinson 9/9
HT Score: Perth 24-4
PoM Points: Jonny Wilkinson 3, Daniel Abraham 2, and Luke Ricketson 1.

Carnarvon's imports continue to impress in the pre-season, with the Grizzlies' new guys playing major roles in today's 24-8 victory over fellow Division Two contenders, Fairfield. A dominant first half set up the emphatic victory for the promotion favourites, who scored three tries to nil to lead 18-2 at the break.
Fairfield: Robert Salvatori. Magro 2/2
Carnarvon: Luke Swain 2, Steven Wild, and Adam Dykes. Luana 4/4
HT Score: Carnarvon 18-2
PoM Points: Luke Swain 3, Adam Dykes 2, and Jamaal Lolesi 1.

The Gold Coast Crusade have opened their shoulders and hit the Northern Cannons for six in today's clash between Premier League giants. The Cannons were blown off the park by an enthusiastic and committed Crusade side, who scored seven tries to two in a one sided whitewash.
Gold Coast: Tommy O'Reilly, Ali Lauititi 2, Matthew Gidley, Luke Rooney, Joel Clinton, and Paul King. Farrell 4/7
Northern: Michael DeVere and Paul Wood. Pariah 0/2
HT Score: Gold Coast 14-8
PoM Points: Chev Walker 3, Luke Rooney 2, and Tommy O'Reilly 1.

Those doubting Sydney's premiership credentials were given a demonstration of the club's newfound confidence today, as the Oilers gunned down Wellington in a thrilling 20-16 victory. The Cougars were a little shaky under a new coach, but Allen showed tremendous vision when he sifted Amos Roberts into fullback to take full advantage of his mercurial running.
Sydney: Joe Rokocoko, Willie Tonga, Steve Price, and Sonny-Bill Williams. Gower 2/5
Wellington: Amos Roberts 2 and Sean O'Loughlin. Sinfield 2/4
HT Score: Wellington 16-8
PoM Points: Joe Rokocoko 3, Craig Wing 2, and Sonny-Bill Williams 1.

The Adelaide Attitude have scored a far from convincing win in today's match against the Waikato Breakers, the result only finalised when Elton Flatley landed a wobbly field goal to extend the Attitude lead to seven points.
Waikato: Henry Faafili. Paul 1/2
Adelaide: Rupeni Caucau and Elton Flatley. Apokalips 2/2. Flatley 1 fg.
HT Score: Adelaide 12-6
PoM Points: Radike Samo 3, Elton Flatley 2, and David Raimes 1.

Several clubs have lodged complaints with the ASRL after Wollongong breezed their way through to the quarter finals after beating their third successive RSC side. The Destructors did it easy in their clash with Cairns, defending well on their way to a 24-0 victory and a showdown with Gold Coast next week.
Wollongong: Ian Hindmarsh, Derrek Lawton, and Danny McGuire 2. Goddard 4/4
Cairns: None.
HT Score: Wollongong 6-0
PoM Points: Danny McGuire 3, Paul Gallen 2, and Ian Hindmarsh 1.

Though where happy with our defence so far, we are really having some problems kicking our combos into gear in the backline. Where looking at dropping Doug Howlett from the squad next round to give young jap, Daisaku Ohata his first start in the adelaide colors. Basically though, where happy to make it through to the quaters.

The Oilers are back to what they do best, kick butt.
We faced our greatest challenge in the BFC against an always strong Wellington side.
Our defence in the first 40 minutes won the game for us. With Steve Price leading the way, we simply bashed their best forwards in Jamie Peacock and Tony Puletua.
Craig Wing continued to capitalise on his forward pack's effectiveness, constantly threatening the Wello line. Joe Rokocoko played his best game for the club at fullback, proving a point to NZ selectors for this years rep matches.
Special mention must go to the brightest young talent in the ASRL in Sonny-Bill Williams. He was simply too hard to contain. He tooped off his superb off-loading game with a gigantic burst through a Toopi tackle and fended off Minichello to score the game winning try in the corner. This guy has scored 4 tries in 4 matches and continues to get better.
