Title: Your DVD Collection

chriswalkerbush - December 5, 2004 02:14 PM (GMT)
I'm sure most of us have something of a collection, so what DVDs make up your collection?

My Ever-Expanding Collection

50 First Dates
Bittersweet romantic comedy which could have been far better had Adam Sandler resisted the urge to 'fix' it with his blend of juvenile humour.

Dawn of the Dead
Remake of George A. Romero's classic zombie horror, done styllishly by newcomer Zack Snyder (SWAT). Most terrifying movie made in recent years.

Philadelphia
Oscar winning movie about AIDS and homophobic predjudices. One of the finest movies made in the last twenty years.

Fight Club
Cult hit about testosterone and anarchy. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are astounding in this black and sometimes comic commentary on society.

Snatch
A must have if you like a good movie about organised crime. Guy Ritchie never fails to deliver a superbly funny and dark film, and Snatch is probably his finest. Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, and Vinnie Jones are all excellent.

Gladiator
Crowe's acting probably isn't worthy of the Oscar it got, but the film rejuvenated the dying 'epic' genre. Better than the more recent forays into the style (Troy, King Arthur etc).

Fellowship of the Ring: Extended
Half an hour of extra footage makes this a new experience, although it's thankfully shared over two DVDs so you're not having to settle in for the long haul. The extra footage is definitely worth the extra price.

The Two Towers: Extended
Whilst the extra forty minutes isn't as good as that included in Fellowship, this collector's edition is still a visually stunning and enthralling film. Worth the extra price just for the extra storyline surrounding Faramir.

Paycheck
A gift from an ex-girlfriend, and the one movie that feels out of place in my collection. Decent enough sci-fi/action movie, if you can see past Ben Affleck.

True Romance
Quirky, dark romantic comedy written by Quentin Tarrantino and superbly acted by an all-star cast. Really is worth a look if you like Tarantino's violent crime films, or like to see the traditional romantic comedy genre blown apart in a fiery gun battle.

Pitch Black
Spawned the fairly terrible 'Chronicles of Riddick', but don't let the big budget let down put you off this sci-fi gem. Put Vin Diesel on the map (which isn't exactly a good thing for some), and contains some excellent action sequences.

American Pie
The best in the American Pie trilogy, and arguably one of the best teen comedies released since the days when Porkies and Revenge of the Nerds served a sex starved teenage male audience.

100 Women
Obscure romantic comedy with some intelligent observations on the world of women. Relies fairly heavily on gross out humour to propel the story, but has a sweet enough love story.

Kalifornia
Early David Duchovny/Brad Pitt thriller about serial killers. Pitt shows he's not just a pretty face with an outstanding performance, whilst the rest of the cast provide suitable flesh in this scarier than expected Hollywood thriller.

The Cooler
Brilliant film starring William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, and Maria Bello. Takes a dark and unrelenting look at the Las Vegas gambling community, and doesn't pull any punches in its no holds barred, off kilter love story.

Shallow Hal
Another Farrelly Brothers' gross out flik, this time relying on fat jokes to get across their message of 'beauty is only skin deep'. Quite good for a Jack Black movie.

The Bourne Identity
Infinitely better than Paul Greengrass' oddly filmed Bourne Supremacy, and one of the best action movies made in the last decade. Superbly written, and directed by Doug Liman (of OC fame)- Identity is an unexpectedly entertaining take on the spy thriller.

The Game
One of those movies you can only watch once, because after that the twist is ruined. Michael Douglas may be unbearable, but the movie itself is a passable thriller.

The Ring
One of the few movies to ever send a shiver down my spine, this remake of the Japanese cult hit is probably one of the rare cases where the remake is better than its predecessor. Wonderfully atmospheric horror.

The Shawshank Redemption
One of the finest films ever made, adapted from Stephen King's 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption'. A heart-warming, sometimes disturbing, tale about hope and what it can do.

Four Weddings and a Funeral
The ubiquitous item to own if you like Hugh Grant or are simply a fan of the English romantic comedy. A classic.

Love, Actually
Another English romantic comedy, fuelled by an all star cast and a soundtrack brilliantly created by Massive Attack. Nine different 'love' stories cover everything from the standard 'affair' to a father trying to earn the trust of his stepson. A real tear-jerker.

Red Dragon
Remake of 'Manhunter' and a prequel to 'Silence of the Lambs'. I'm a fan of Edward Norton, so I am somewhat biased when I saw I preferred this to the earlier made 'Lambs'. Norton and Hopkins have fantastic dramatic chemistry.

Blair Witch Project
The unheralded cult hit is a well made horror flick and a must have if you've got female company. So many jump moments, and so few of them actually scary. Another movie with absolutely brilliant atmosphere.

Castaway
Somewhat overblown drama about a man stranded on a remote tropical island. Not as good as other Hanks' films, but worth a look if you enjoy a good, heart-wrenching tale of survival. Wilson!

8mm
Underrated, black thriller about the porn industry. Takes a bold look at the darker side of the industry, as Nicolas Cage investigates the authenticity of a snuff movie. Really is a great movie, but not for the weak of stomach.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
A masterpiece from the writer of 'Adaptation' and 'Being John Malkovich'. A seemless combination of Kauffman's unique voice and some utterly mind blowing cinematography. As much a visual spectacle as it is a thought provoking commentary on love in contemporary society.

The Boondock Saints
A low budget, delightfully Irish film in the same vein as Pulp Fiction. Two Irish brothers take it upon themselves to become 'vengeful angels' and kill criminals. Worth seeing for Willem DeFoe's brilliant performance.

High Fidelity
If you've ever been broken up with, or even broken up with someone, John Cusack brilliantly adapts Nick Hornby's novel to a more accessible form. Witty and inspiring, High Fidelity is a real cult hit.

Well, it may disappoint you. Whilst it does blow conventional views of true love out of the water, it does still reinforce the concept. Except, rather than a series of amusing pratfalls effecting the two, we're instead treated to drug deals, gun fights, and prostitution.

bumper_benny - December 6, 2004 11:10 PM (GMT)

They're all fairly bad, with Last Hero being one of those 'so bad, it's good' movies. The One is shit too.

The only Jet Li movie I've been able to appreciate was 'Hero', which I'd recommend anyone see.

MrCharisma - December 7, 2004 06:43 AM (GMT)

At least my taste in movies isn't in Jet Li's ass. ;-)

Based on the above list of movies I own (a total of four of which meet your 'loser guy gets girl' requirements), I'd actually say my taste seems to lean more towards action movies. Only difference between you and I is that my action movies were performed in English, had a budget, and star actors who actually act. :-P

I'm shocked, Andrew. Whilst it did 'suck' in terms of the storyline and acting, as a cinema experience it is one of the finest movies you'll ever see. Visually stunning, and boasting cinematography that is sorely lacking from the majority of Hollywood movies.

For shame. How can you have a critically acclaimed parody of world politics in the same sentence as Full Throttle?

Hey Magro, did you get Vidiot on DVD of VHS?

Yah... kinda

The movie is called 'UHF' but that's from America. The title we've got it Videiot from UHF.. and yes I got it on DVD. :D

Willow is a good movie, as is Shallow Hal. It's very cheesey but very easy to watch. One of those quality flicks you can just put on and watch if you're bored.

I'm thinking about getting the Rocky boxset or the O.C season 1 boxset. Might even go to ebay and see what Hong Kong Jet Li movies are around.

chriswalkerbush - March 23, 2005 12:44 PM (GMT)
Haha, picked up the legendary 'Super Troopers' today for a sweet $9.95

I couldn't believe my eyes. One of the best movies ever. :P

Dominatrix - March 23, 2005 03:46 PM (GMT)
' I want a litre of cola'

Hahaha. Best movie ever

I only last week finished downloading Vidiot off edonkey.

chriswalkerbush - March 29, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
I picked up X-Men 2 (Two Disc Edition) today for $12. I'm loving being able to access second hand DVD stores.

Will doubtless add more to my collection when I get paid tomorrow.

chriswalkerbush - March 29, 2005 04:44 PM (GMT)
BTW Magro, what DVDs of mine have you got aside from Dawn of the Dead?

chriswalkerbush - March 31, 2005 06:46 AM (GMT)
