Title: 2004 Dally M Awards

chriswalkerbush - October 9, 2004 08:30 AM (GMT)
At another gala ceremony, the fifth annual Dally M awards were held amongst great fanfare in Sydney. The most interest was certainly around the three way battle for the player of the year between Andrew Johns, Andy Farrell, and new face, Jonny Maquina.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Fullback of the Year: Koru Tirohara (Coffs Harbour)
The unassuming Japanese import has been a revelation in custodian for the Wyrms, scoring a club record nineteen tries in an astounding year for the club. Will undoubtedly walk into a Japanese jersey at season's end.

Winger of the Year: Caleb Ralph (Darwin)
Another player from a club outside the top eight, Ralph was an inspiration for the struggling Cyclones in 2004/2005. Another prolific try scorer, Ralph also capped off a solid year at club level with two caps for New Zealand in the tri-series.

Centre of the Year: Stirling Mortlock (Coffs Harbour)
The former Union star has returned to the form that made him a household name in 2002/2003, with his best season in Rugby League to date. Not only was Mortlock a standout in the Wyrms' backline all year, he was also a contender for the Rep Player of the Year award to be handed out later tonight.

Five Eighth of the Year: Elton Flatley (Adelaide)
Another Union convert continues the codes' domination of the proceedings in the Premier League awards. Flatley can be credited with much of Adelaide's success in 2004/2005, as well as the resurgence of Queensland in State of Origin.

Halfback of the Year: Andrew Johns (Gold Coast)
The world's greatest halfback again affirmed his role at the top of the dog pile with another record shattering year, setting a new record for tries, goals, and points in a season as well as finishing in a three way draw at season's end for player of the year honours.

Prop of the Year: Craig Smith (Melbourne
The Kiwi veteran was a rock in the Executioners' defensive line this season, tackling his heart out in his finest year in several seasons. Like Ralph, Smith also finished off a solid season with appearances for New Zealand in their tri-series loss.

Hooker of the Year: Danny Buderus (Gold Coast)
A late surge in polling saw the former Australian rake take out the hooker of the year award for the first time in his career, affirming his status as the greatest dummy half in the world at present. Scored a bag of tries for the minor premiers.

Second Rower of the Year: Wairangi Koopu (Port Moresby)
The mobile Kiwi backrower was a standout for the award this year, making the most metres for a back rower and impressing New Zealand selectors enough for them to have him run on in both games of the tri-series.

Lock of the Year: Andy Farrell (Capetown)
The veteran Capetown forward may be bound for the Crusade in 2005, but his heart was clearly with Capetown all season long. Farrell continues to be an inspiration to any side lucky enough to have his services.

Utility of the Year: Iestyn Harris (Surfers Paradise)
The Welshman can claim a fair portion of the credit for Surfers Paradise's appearance in this year's finals race, with his ball running and field kicking turning the Punks from perennial underachievers to contenders for the title in 2004/2005.

Coach of the Year: Dr. Kermit Krockett Q.C (Northern)
Has taken the reins at the tumultuous joint venture between Manly and North Sydney and steered the club to its highest placing since the ASRL's Premier League format was introduced.

Rookie Coach of the Year: Anthony McElroy (Adelaide)
In his first year at the reins of Adelaide, McElroy has torn off the club's 'choker' tag and guided them into their first finals' series in over four years. His penchant for Rugby Union players, the death of clubs such as Suva, has proven to be a breath of fresh air for the South Australian giants.

Captain of the Year: Andrew Johns (Gold Coast
Lead his club to yet another minor premiership, and will be hoping to snare another premiership ring with his club before heading to Capetown next season.

Rep Players of the Year: Elton Flatley (Adelaide/QLD/Australia) and Andrew Johns (Gold Coast/NSW/Australia)
The two halves have not only been revelations for their respective clubs, but also played big parts in this season's hectic representative schedule. Whilst Johns got the points in NSW's defeat of QLD at Origin level, it was their pairing at international level that can take a lot of credit for Australia's dominant series win.

Top Try-Scorer: Andrew Johns (Gold Coast) with 23
Johns set a new record for tries in a season.

Top Point-Scorer: Andrew Johns (Gold Coast) with 403
A new ASRL record for points in a season.

Rookie of the Year: Jonny Maquina (Melbourne)
The talented Brazilian lock has signalled his intentions to don a green and gold jersey, and will be seriously considered following a record shattering rookie year for the Executioners. The Melbourne raised stallion finished level with Farrell and Johns at season's end.

Player of the Year: Andrew Johns (Gold Coast
The talented halfback took out the award again, affirming his status as the greatest player in the ASRL at present. Special mention was also made to Capetown's Andy Farrell and Melbourne's Jonny Maquina.

MrCharisma - October 9, 2004 08:34 AM (GMT)
Yay no awards.... you can all go to hell!

chriswalkerbush - October 9, 2004 04:35 PM (GMT)
Fullback of the Year: Kris Radlinski (North Queensland
The English fullback was an inspiration to the North Queensland Dolphins, guiding the side to fifth and what could hopefully be a promotion winning season finish.

Winger of the Year: Tevita Vaikona (Hawkesbury)
A prolific try-scorer, Vaikona was consistently dangerous for the Mavericks in their quest for a return to Premier League. Like Caleb Ralph in Premier League, Vaikona earned caps in the tri-series courtesy of his superb form.

Centre of the Year: Paul Whatuira (Canberra)
It's definitely been the year of the Kiwi, with New Zealand players dominanting Dally M polling so far this season. Canberra's Paul Whatuira showed why he'll be a dangerous customer next season with game after game of consistent threat.

Five Eighth of the Year: David Humphrys (Waikato
Will be able to claim most of the credit for Waikato's outstanding season this season, guiding the Breakers well all season long. His goal kicking abilities were inspirational.

Halfback of the Year: Eron Bates (Auckland)
Last year's rookie of the year has backed up last year's honours with a Dally M halfback of the year award, proving his debut season at Sunshine Coast was far from a fluke. Not only did he score regulararly, Bates also kicked the majority of Auckland's goals.

Prop of the Year: Tom Newberry (New England)
The little known Armidale based prop impressed many league experts with his no nonsense defence and jarring hits for the Ferrets. Widely favoured for this year's rookie of the year award, Newberry proved this season that the Ferrets were more than capapable of producing their own talent.

Hooker of the Year; Mark Riddell (Penrith)
Whilst his injuries may have slowed his season, Penrith's Mark Riddell was one of Division Two's most consistent performers, wholly responsible for Penrith's finish in a tightly contested Division Two.

Second Rower of the Year: Evarn Tuimavave (Penrith)
The little known Kiwi forward was a starring member of New Zealand's test series loss to Australia, trying valiantly but not possessing the experience to upset the reigning champions.

Lock of the Year: Scott Magro (Fairfield)
It isn't the first time the Maltese born star has been nominated for Division Two's player of the year award, with young Scott Magro virtually assured of the award after an astounding season.

Utility of the Year: Damien Fields (Colombo)
Colombo's second position on the ASRL ladder has been largely due from the form of goal kicking forward utility, Damien Fields, who has coped far better than expected in a side not even tipped to make the top eight.

Rookie of the Year: Shane Mongta (Port Adelaide)
Whilst he enjoyed an outstanding season at Sunshine Coast last year, Mongta has made a name for himself at Port Adelaide courtesy of his outstanding speed and agility.

Coach of the Year: Chris Colombo (Colombo)
The inexperienced coach has made drastic improvements on last season's finish, putting Colombo in with a chance of promotion with this years' finals series.

Captain of the Year: Tommy Martyn (Auckland)
The veteran five eighth has proven in years gone by that he knows how to handle a club, and he has proved that this year with his management of the Auckland Chiefs in what was a crucial game for the club's future.

Rookie Coach of the Year: Matt (Lake Heights
It's never easy to control a side making its debut in the ASRL, but young gun Matt has proven that it's possible, guiding Lake Heights to an achingly close top eight finish.

Top Try-Scorer (Joe Roff) Hawkesbury
The Union convert set new try-scoring records for Division Two.

Top Point-Scorer: Scott Magro (Fairfield)
The Fairfield lock and playmaker has shown in limited isolation that he has an astute criminal mind- a feature that could prove handy against the Aussies.

SOBER EDIT: What the fuck was I trying to say? I think I meant that, despite being at an ordinary side, he still looks like a gun player

Player of the Year: Scott Magro (Fairfield)
Has proven that he has no equal in Division Two, again claiming the award on the back of his astounding ball playing ability

2 seasons in a row that Anthony McElroy got the ROokie coach of the year. Congratulations, adelaide have gone great this season. And congrats to Andrew Johns on player of the year. Just like the real dally m's :)

brandell - October 10, 2004 03:48 AM (GMT)
After the Presentations of both the Dally M Awards Ceremony Brian Randell held a press conference to talk about his dissapointment.

"Chris Columbo Coach of The Year, eat my dick! Did he coach a team to the Minor Premiership? Wowie he took a shit side and made it good, I took a good side and made it great, my backline will be something that people will talk about for years to come. And whats this rookie of the year Shane Mongta? Brendan Dean has way more POMS than that skirt he deserved the award. But fear not people the Mavericks are back in top flight league and we will make our presence felt. Ecuse me I have some sides to make immortal."

No. Well atleast get some Candy For Youself!

bumper_benny - October 10, 2004 11:20 PM (GMT)
Chris.. David Mclean is not a rookie. His been in the penny reserves for a while i think

brandell - October 11, 2004 12:37 AM (GMT)
He played for Hornsby back in the day as well.

chriswalkerbush - October 11, 2004 02:28 AM (GMT)
It doesn't matter how long he's been playing in the real world, it's when he played his first season of ASRL football.

He started for Hornsby twice in the entire time he was there, and wasn't in any sides before that: therefore this is his rookie season by ASRL standards.

MrCharisma - October 11, 2004 11:47 AM (GMT)
No Entrace players? Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

roosterman57 - October 12, 2004 10:53 AM (GMT)
"As a proud coch of Lake Heights Lightning i am stunned and flattered at the same time accepting Rookie Coach of the year award. It was always going to be a difficult task for not just me but also the players to take on a new team. Nobody expected us to be within a country mile of the top 8 but we prooved them wrong with one of the best debut years in ASRL history (excluding the 1st year of the ASRL when every1 was debuting). I would like to thank all the players in particular Jason Stevens who captained the side and also Andy Henderson who captained the side when Stevo was injured and also when he went through a difficult time with personal problems. (Rumors are he got drugged up by some weirdo chick who had sex with him and vieoed it all then sent the tape to his house. He was devestated the past 9 years was all a waste). Also id like to make a special mention to Nihal Silvain who was undoubtedly our best player for the year and also to Thom Kempton who kicked greatly for the team and who qwe dearly missed when he was inured. Last of all thankyou to CEO Chris Walker-Bush for making the ASRL such an enjoyable competition."

brandell - October 12, 2004 01:44 PM (GMT)
After hearing the dribble of shit the lake heights coach had to say Brian Randell thought he should reitterate his point. What your a dick mate your team is tripe and will always be tripe.

Randell, Randell, Randell. It kills you that so many of Australia's youth look up to and respect me. Can you blame them? I'm a perfect example of everything a young man should be. Talented, handsome, diligent, hung.... the list could, were I not modest, go on forever. <_<

Chris Columbo - October 13, 2004 01:50 AM (GMT)
Its an honour for me to have received coach of the year this season. It puts more gloss on what has already proven to be a great year for me and the Harlequins. Id like to thank all the players, my coaching support staff and everyone who has become involved with the Harlequins over the last two years. We are beginning to sho what a forceleague in Sri Lanka can be. Without these people all putting in a mammoth effort all year this would not have been possible. Most of all id like to thank the very vocal fans of Sri Lanka. Every cheer the fans have made all year has given the team the motivation to put in more effort every time we take the feild. We hope we can take this support all the way through the finals to our first premiership. Finally id like to thank all involved with the running of the ASRL for giving us such a great and competitive competition.
