MALE

1. Mickey Rourke : The best EVER.
2. Edward Norton : The DeNiro of his generation, without any doubt.
3. Denzel Washington : I know he plays the same kind of roles, but he sure does them well.
4. Slyvester Stallone : The topic said "favourite", not "best". I pay for a movie ticket everytime he releases a movie.
5. Al Pacino : His roles are nowhere near as meaty and dark as they used to be. "Say hello to my little friend :bang: "
6. Robert De Niro : Same as Pacino.
7. Sean Penn : The only actor to rival Norton in intensity and screen presence today.
8. Clint Eastwood : The pioneer and perhaps the best tough guy actor ever.
9. John Travolta : Coolest guy (outside Mickey Rourke) in film.
10. Bruce Willis : Almost as cool as Rourke and Travolta.

FEMALE

1. Uma Thurman : Very versatile and underrated performer.
2. Carlize Theron : hmmmmm.
3. Halle Berry
4. Jodie Foster
5. Michelle Pfieffer
6. Elizabeth Shue
7. Drew Barrymore
8. Cameron Diaz (btw, I hate Charlie's Angels)
9. Jennifer Conolley
10. Gwyneth Paltrow

Denzel Washington is the best

MarkF - August 11, 2004 03:07 AM (GMT)
There are two 'older' actors and two 'younger' ones who I could watch all day: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Edward Norton and Sean Penn.

Other than that there are a stack of actors I like, such as (in no particular order):

Jack Black
John Tavolta
Jonny Depp
Bruce Willis
Tom Cruise
Ben Stiller
Hugh Grant
Kevin Spacey
Jean Reno

However I really stuggle to think of any female actors I like - other than to look at. Gwyneth Paltrow has been good in the few films I have seen with her in, as has Naomi Watts, but that's about it. Oh, and Frances McDormand, too. However I'll happily look at Kate Hudson, Keira Knightley, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, Katie Holmes, Jenna Elfman etc in whatever they are in!

chriswalkerbush - August 11, 2004 05:24 AM (GMT)
Keira Knightley, Katie Holmes, and Jenna Elfman are all kinds of fine. Nice choices. Can't believe I forgot them.

Schmo - August 11, 2004 11:46 AM (GMT)
I can't believe I forgot Ben Stiller!!! he is the best.
I was going to list some females but I also struggled to think of any actresses that I like. Probably Brittany Murphy for her in 8 mile, and also because of Just Married.

AUSTRALIANS Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe have been rated among top 100 movie stars of all time by Empire magazine.

Magnetic ... Robert De Niro in Heat (1996).

The local stars rank alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names including Jack Nicholson (No.3), Katherine Hepburn (No.9) and Cary Grant (No.13).

Topping the glittering list is Taxi Driver and Godfather IIstar, Robert De Niro.

The 60-year-old Oscar-winner has starred in some of the big screen's most memorable movies over the past thirty years, including Martin Scorcese's Raging Bull (1980) and Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter (1978).

Despite a recent run of mediocre roles in movies such as Analyze That and Meet the Parents De Niro remains a box office drawcard and one of the silver screen's best-loved actors.

Kidman tops the list of Australian actors coming in at a respectable No.39.

The flame-haired beauty won praise for her performances in To Die For (1995) and The Hours (2002).

The actress has not only escaped from the glare of ex-husband Tom Cruise, she has actually outshone him. Despite starring in the blockbusters including Top Gun (1986) and Mission Impossible (1996) the diminutive Cruise dismally failed to find his way into the top 100.

It's less than six years since Blanchett made a splash as England's virgin queen in Elizabeth but the 35-year-old has established herself as one of the movie industry's most talented stars, finding herself at No.54 on the list.

Blanchett, who has shunned Tinseltown for the English costal town of Brighton, is honing her skills on the stage in Sydney this month as Hedda Gabler in Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name.

Rugged Coffs Harbour resident Russell Crowe, falls in at No.53, just before Blanchett.

Crowe was the toast of Hollywood after winning the Best Actor Oscar in 2000 for his performance as Maximus in Gladiator.

The actor has since lit up the screen in a variety of roles from the troubled maths genius in A Beautiful Mind(2001) to the British sea captain in Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World (2003).

Crowe's earlier work, though, still occupies a special place in the heart of Australian moviegoers.

His performance as the Nazi skinhead Hando in Romper Stomper (1992) marked him out as a local star in the making.

Empire's Top 10 Greatest Actors
