The NRL continues to hot up, with three sides undefeated and only one side winless after three rounds of football.
Manly's backline has blown away a shell-shocked and under prepared Cronulla side, the Sea Eagles never looking back in recording a dominant 28-8 win over their cross town rivals. New faces, Paul Stephenson and Brett Stewart, were Manly's best.
Cronulla: Nigel Vagana. Kimmorley 2/2
Manly: John Hopoate, Michael Monaghan, Chad Randall 2, and Paul Stephenson. Walker 4/7
PoM Points: Paul Stephenson 3, Brett Stewart 2, and Nigel Vagana 1.
The Saints definitely came marching into Olympic Park today, the Dragons humbling Melbourne at home with a 34-12 display. The Dragons' greatest loss as a joint venture took place on the ground, but it was all one way traffic for the Dragons today.
Melbourne: Billy Slater 2. Geyer 2/3
St George/Illawarra: Mark Riddell 2, Reece Simmonds, Trent Barrett, Dean Young, and Jason Ryles. Head 5/6
PoM Points: Brent Kite 3, Dean Young 2, and Matthew Head 1.
Penrith have gotten out of jail in their match with New Zealand, late penalty goals from Ryan Girdler lifting the side away from a golden point decider. The fulltime score off 22-16 was probably fair- with Penrith the better side in rainy conditions.
New Zealand: Tony Martin, Thomas Leullai, and Iafeta Peleaeasina. Martin 2/3
Penrith: Rhys Wesser, Ryan Girdler, and Fa'amanu Asoava. Girdler 5/6
PoM Points: Trent Waterhouse 3, Craig Gower 2, and Rhys Wesser 1.
North Queensland became the first home side of the round to score a win, the Cowboys winning a low scoring clash against Canberra, 16-12. Both sides scored a brace of tries, but Hannay's penalty goals late in the game proved the difference in a defensively taut game.
North Queensland: Paul Bowman and David Myles. Hannay 4/4
Canberra: Clinton Schifcofske and Joel Monaghan. Schifcofske 2/2
PoM Points: Josh Hannay 3, David Myles 2, and Ruben Wiki 1.
In another thriller, Parramatta have held out a spirited Newcastle fight-back to record a 30-26 win over the visiting Knights. It was a game that Newcastle should have won, with referee Shayne Hayne impressing nobody with his bizarre calls and lop-sided penalty count.
Parramatta: Wade McKinnon, Craig Stapleton, Jamie Lyon, Eric Grothe Jr, and Michael Witt. Witt 5/8
Newcastle: Andrew Johns, Steve Simpson, Daniel Abraham, and Michael Ennis. Johns 5/7
PoM Points: Daniel Abraham 3, Andrew Johns 2, and Timana Tahu 1.
In the battle of wooden spoon contenders, South Sydney have emerged 28-18 victors over Central Coast in a surprisingly high quality game. The Rabbitohs dominated possession (63%) and control (an astounding 83%), but were prevented from running away with the game by some superb defence from the Bears- who made eighty tackles more than their hosts. Souths were aided by a lop sided 17-3 penalty count,
South Sydney: Brad Watts, Adam MacDougall, Willie Peters, and Bryan Fletcher. Riddle 2/3. Williams 4/4
Central Coast: Lee Ta Maari, Mat Toschak, and Jamie Goddard. McLean 3/3
PoM Points: Bryan Fletcher 3, Brad Watts 2, and Adam MacDougall 1.
Sydney have asserted their claim to the premiership favourtism, the Roosters humbling Canterbury 28-12 to remain leaders of the NRL after three rounds. The entire Roosters' engine fired, with the forwards enjoying surprisingly little resistance from the Bulldogs' usually fiery pack.
Sydney: Anthony Minichiello, Justin Hodges 2, Stuart Webb, and Adrian Morley. Fitzgibbon 4/6
Canterbury: Andrew Ryan and Braith Anasta. El Masri 2/3
PoM Points: Justin Hodges 3, Adrian Morley 2, and Michael Crocker 1.
Wests' Tigers front rower, Todd Payten, has scored a try with only four seconds remaining to lift Wests to a 28-24 victory over the Brisbane Broncos. The scores were locked at 24 all after a surprisingly tight game, with Golden Point looming, before the tired prop backed up a Pat Richards break to score the decisive try out wide.
Wests: Pat Richards, Michael Beuttner, Todd Payten 2, and Darren Senter. Covell 4/7
Brisbane: Brad Meyers, Craig Frawley, Brett Seymour, and Ben Ikin. Lockyer 4/5
PoM Points: Scott Sattler 3, Scott Prince 2, and Pat Richards 1.
