Darwin will clash with Gold Coast in the 2004/2005 Bob Fulton Cup final, following wins that would have looked more realistic if they'd been attributed to different games. Whilst Gold Coast humbled the Oilers in Melbourne, it was Darwin who were forced to win their game in extra time against a plucky Sunshine Coast side.

Darwin and Sunshine Coast played out a real thriller at Telstra Stadium to decide the first final placing, with the scores locked at 12 all following eighty minutes of extra time. A Jonny Wilkinson penalty goal in the 77th minute was the catalyst for the extra time, with the Wizards having squandered a 12-0 halftime lead. Extra time saw the Wizards go up 18-12 courtesy of a try to David Seage, before Mark Tookey got things level with a powerful try with only minutes remaining. A superlative Wilkinson field goal, hit from fifty out under immense pressure, sealed a memorable 19-18 win for the Cyclones.

In the other semi final, the Crusade dominated the first half courtesy of some forward domination and a scintillating double from Matt Orford. The halftime scoreline of 24-4, achieved before the 30th minute, showcased just how powerful the Crusade performance had been. The Oilers hit back with tries to Luke Patten and Craig Wing in the 62nd and 69th minutes- before Ruben Wiki put the result beyond doubt in 76th minute. The Crusade went through to the final courtesy of a big 30-14 win.
