The inaugural Rising Star Conference finals saw one or two upset results, as the competition remains as unpredictable as ever.
4 vs. 5: Birchgrove Nightwings vs. Rotarua Kittens
Birchgrove and Rotarua started off the first ever RSC finals' series with a nail biting game. While Birchgrove lead 14-6 after fifty minutes of play, a late try to Toru Suzuki had the Kittens within striking distance. Only a wobbly field goal from Willie Wolfgramm could seal a 15-10 victory for the Nightwings.
Birchgrove Nightwings: Dicky Veramu and David McElroy. Seers 1/2. Pariah 2/2. Wolfgramm 1 fg.
Rotarua: Toru Suzuki and Martin Aspinwall. Graham 1/3
PoM Points: Dicky Veramu 3, Craig West 2, and Martin Aspinwall 1.
3 vs. 6: The Flintlocks vs. Wests Panthers
The Wests Panthers have made clear their intentions to take out the first RSC title with a dominant 30-10 win over The Flintlocks. Regular performances Aaron Gorrel and Eron Bates were dominant for the Panthers- who laid an unnerving prelude to Manly's 30-6 Premier League final loss to Wellington.
The Flintlocks: Feriti Tuilagi and Sean Hoppe. Ahmed 1/2
Wests: Ty Williams, Mark Jones, Brenton Bowen, Eron Bates, and Scott Prince. Bates 5/6
PoM Points: Aaron Gorrell 3, Eron Bates 2, and Michael Russo 1.
2 vs. 7: The Entrance Tigers vs. Northern Territory Lions
After last week storming home for a 25-24 win in the clash of big cats, Northern Territory have improved on a winning formula to upset The Entrance 28-18. The Lions got up for the second consecutive week over the Tigers- who also lost Samer El Masri in a sickening head clash with Beau Rivers during the game.
The Entrance: Jason Bell, Brad Morrin, and Sonny-Bill Williams. El Masri 3/5
Northern Territory: Beau Rivers, Danny Bull, Shane Perry, Brett Howland, and Dean Limpus. Tolley 4/7
PoM Points: Beau Rivers 3, Brett Howland 2, and Anthony Farrell 1.
1 vs. 8: Sunshine Coast Wizards vs. North West Kookaburras
The Kookaburras looked on track to complete a round of upsets in the RSC finals when they lead the Wizards 14-10 and 20-16 during their clash with the first placed Sunshine Coast Wizards today. In what was a day of comebacks for the home side (whose parent club would storm home for a 46-36 win against Darwin later in the day)- the Wizards came home to record a 29-20 win and end North West's season.
Sunshine Coast: Dom Peters, George Carmont, Dane Tilse, and Kade Snowden. Sweeney 6/8. Fitzgerald 1 fg
North West: Simon Haughton and Brendan Doust 2. Ferris 4/4
PoM Points: Kade Snowden 3, George Carmont 2, and Dane Tilse 1.
