The Irish and Scottish sides ran onto the pitch to decide who would take on the Australians in the World Cup Final. Right from the kick off the Scots were on the back foot struggling to get out of their own half for much of the first exchanges. It could have been terrible news for the scots had Ronan O'Gara and Tommy O'Reillys hands not let the Irish down. But a great Oliver Wilkes ran got the ball in Irish territory for the first time in the game. But after a few sets to each team the Irish again were looking test the Scottish defence on the line. But after a turnover, another great Oliver Wilkes run had the Scots attacking the Irish line for the first time in the match. On the last tackle Scottish five-eight Gordon Ross put the ball high in the air near the post, and with Irish fullback O'Gara getting caught up in the padding of the posts Scottish fullback outjumped the pack to come down with the first four points of the game. Wilkes slotted the conversion with ease.
From the restart it was much of the same, Wilkes darting from dummy half, both teams turning the ball over. It wasn't until the 20th minute that the crowd again rose as one, when Brian Carney made a dive for the corner after a stellar Irish backline move, but the cover defence of Waters and Gilmore was just enough for the video ref to give the red light. With the rest of the half full of penalties, dropped ball and bad decisions the teams went to the rooms, heads down, coaches fuming and the crowd asleep.
HALFTIME: Scotland 6 - Ireland 0

With the second half underway it didn't take long for the game to fall to the same level of that before the half and this was capped off by the decision of Scottish prop Chris Logan deciding it would be a good idea to take a hit up on the last from 30 out. Coach Douglas was ropeable pulling Logan from the field of play and sending him to the dressing room (Logan wasn't seen again at Suncorp that day). Not long after a penalty from 40 out to Ronan O'Gara put the Wolfhound on the board and pulled them back to within four points. A couple of sets later a break from Brian O'Driscoll put Shannon O'Reilly into a 50 meter footrace with Richard Horne to the try line. For O'Reilly the line came just quick enough, while bring pulled down five out from the line O'Reilly slid over the line to draw level. A calm conversion from O'Gara put the Irish in front 8-6 with 25 left on the clock. With ten to go a great run to the 'other' O'Reilly, Tommy, put the Irish on the attack again but a great last ditch tackle from Richard Horne put the Crusade man into touch and all was normal, until, without the grunt of Chris Logan the Scottish forward were pushed of the ball, giving the ball back to the Irish only for O'Gara to drop the ball a tackle later. But a forward pass by Seamus O'Grady kept the pressure on the Scots and a grubber into the in goal was dived on by a hungry Shannon O'Reilly to pickup his second try of the game. O'Gara slotted the conversion for a 14-6 lead with just 7 minutes left on the clock. Scotland desperation in the dieing stages of the game was evident, giving away quite a few penalties allowing Tommy Martin to put another nail in the coffin with a close range field goal. Scotland continued to push hard, but by doing so only gave away another penalty goal to make the gap between the teams a lot greater then it should have.
